Re: if you quit drinking...
100 Calories per shot of hard liquor.
By my calculations, 6 shots is like eating 3 twinkies.
How would you feel about your diet if you ate 3 twinkies every day of the week?
Some shots also have a lot of sugar, that leads to fat too.
I bet you would loose 15 lbs in 1 year. My doctor told me if I stop eating a donut each morning, I will drop 15 lbs over time.
Re: if you quit drinking...
Try drinking low cal drinks, like vodka&diet coke or low carb beer, either should come in under 100 calories per drink.
Re: if you quit drinking...
Try it and see! Drinking (at work?) really isn't necessary, so why not just cut all those calories. Say 18 drinks a week, that's about 1800 calories a week. you'll loose 1/2 a week without trying.
Re: if you quit drinking...
Here's another thought for you. When you drink, your body will burn off the alcohol first before it ever gets to burning off your fat.
So, if you stop drinking at work, you'll be burning off your fat stores instead of the alcohol.
Within two weeks, you should see noticeable improvement in your body fat percentage. Don't go by your weight, because you'll build muscle more easily that way and it weighs more than fat.
Re: if you quit drinking...
That depends on what you are doing shots of. I only drink wine and do shots only. Mixed drinks have to many carbs/sugar which turn into fat.
Re: if you quit drinking...
And as far as not drinking at work, my friend cut out drinking (all-together) for that Ash Wednesday thing last year .. I forget what it's called and how long it lasts, but she lost several pounds. I know she drank probably 6 out of 7 nights per week. Maybe a cocktail or two most nights, and a few wasted so-many-drinks-I-lost-count nights .. so results, obviously, may vary..
BTW .. If you were doing shots of straight liquor, as opposed to a 'mixed' shot, what would the lowest calorie shots be (i.e. which liquor: whiskey, vodka, rum ..)? Or would it not matter bc of the sugar content??
Re: if you quit drinking...
Wine is the lowest calorie alcohol...
Gin and Tonic is the highest calorie...
So I guess.. avoid gin. o.O;
Re: if you quit drinking...
yeah I don't like gin much .. I like rum/diet coke, vodka/soda, and shots of whiskey .. and occasionally scotch or vodka on the rocks..
Re: if you quit drinking...
I want to say a serving of vodka has 60 cals. Could be wrong, though.
Re: if you quit drinking...
Then there's the issue of drinking 18 shots of alcohol a week. That's an awful lot of booze.
Calorie-wise, if a shot is 100 calories and you're drinking 200-600 calories a night, then cutting that out will provide a similar deficit. A pound of fat is 3500 calories, so you would lose anywhere from 1000 to 3000 calories a week by cutting out the booze. That would be similar to adding 30 to 75 minutes of cardio per day, if you want to think of it that way.

Lent?
Re: if you quit drinking...
I REALLY need to stop drinking on the job, asap.
I've been doing it pretty heavily for the last couple of months because sometimes that's all that'll help numb the pain of another amazingly crappy night. Anyway, it's all accumulated into my ab area and now I have a very noticable pot belly that's growing at an exponential rate.
I'm going to have to start hitting the gym and do some cardio. And I swear, if I don't lose this belly within 3 months, I'm quitting. THAT'S how much I want to get rid of it.
Re: if you quit drinking...
YES LR! Lent .. that's what it was... silly me.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone was going to mention the other health affects of drinking so much, aside from weight. I mean, it's a drug and you're using a lot of it. 2-6 drinks a night, 5X a week is too much. Can you keep it to 1 or 2 of something with any health benefits, like wine? Can you have fake shots? Can you just not drink at work and save it for fun?

Actually, the wine is a good idea.
Shots are meant to be taken in all at once, leaving you nothing to do with your hands or to sip in the meantime. That's why so many people I know do shot after shot.
Wine, OTOH, you have to sip. You can hold the glass and savor it. Takes longer to consume.
Would probably go a long way in cutting down your consumption.
Good call Susan!
Re: if you quit drinking...
i drink becuase im miserable in all factors of my life right now. im in a real tough spot. it used to make me feel better but not anymore, so i dont see the point of it.
i usually do shots of goldschlager, or kamikazis. sometimes a royal flush or a chery bomb.
but yeah, drinking is not a good thing anymore, i shall try to stop just for a month and see if it does me anygood.
Re: if you quit drinking...
it will vary from person to person, like anything else. me and my best friend could both cut out the same thing from our diet and have different results. but once you stop to find out how much you'll lose, you're also not hungover, you have more energy, you arent pigging out when youre drunk, soo many other things that contribute to your weight loss. im trying this myself (not working out too well for now but im not giving up!) good luck!
