Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
Yup, I know I'm behind, but I finally watched it this weekend. It was awesome! The Enron scandel went down when I was in business school, it made finance classes verrrry interesting to say the least. Enron changed the face of business and finance in this country for the better, although we have a long way to go.
Its an emotional tale for me as well, being from Houston. Many people got fucked over big time, including the state of California. I totally dig how the documentary developed the rise of the Governator.
So, even though this might be old news, who has seen the documentary, and does anyone have any comments?
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
Haven't seen it...but an ex-Enron employee opened a Gelato shop in my area, and advertises it as being owned by an ex-Enron guy...gets a lot of press for that fact. I think that's weird!
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
Enron was invested in CA's state employee retirement fund. I cashed out of it before they tanked & affected everyone else's contribution to their retirement. One of the few lucky breaks I've gotten financially.
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
I saw it, and yes, it's great! K is from California originally so he was living here at the time, and he never really understood exactly what happened in that scandal, why the blackouts were going on, or why the state was in such trouble. By the end of that movie, his blood was boiling.
Personally I don't think it did change business for the better. Corporations are still operating the same way, just a little more carefully now. Most of them are just out to fuck over everyone they can for an extra buck.
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
This Enron fiasco is actually a huge sore spot for me as a lifelong California....I can barely imagine how Houstonians must have felt. BUT I would like to blame the state of California for doing business with such people....Gray Davis' head rolled over this (but we got the Governator + his Kennedy in-laws in his place in Sacramento so I guess it evens out in the end?)
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
Also, ex-Enron guys are highly sought after by today's billion dollar hedge funds
It really makes you wonder what's going on in the shadowy world of hedge fund investments / derivatives !!!

Check him out. Lou Pai is the ultimate lucky evil fucking bastard. Dammit, I wasn't stripping in Houston until the late 90's, doh!
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
HAH I love that quip in the Wiki article about him being "lucky" to divorce.
& He's investing in pollution emmision credits.
But I bet he still has a tiny penis. (JOKE!!!!! Not racism.)
Re: Enron: Smartest Guys in the Room
My favourite scene from the movie is when Pai told his friends in the boardroom that he hid the smell of strippers from by dripping some gasoline on his shoes on the drive home. One of the guys quips, "Yeah, but now your wife is going to think that you're fucking the gas station attendant."
Apparently the guy was reposted to northern Minnesota the next week.

I saw this about a year ago and posted it on this board. I knew you would love Lou Pai. I think you would have loved living in Colorado married to a multi millionaire..... ;D

No. That's not the way I looked at it. Way off-base here Sitri. He's a fucking criminal who got lucky. I have zero respect for him. What happened to you exactly?
