Website Directory Question
I've recently found some old Geocities accounts of mine (I'm talking years and years old) that still have some old ass websites I made uploaded to them. There's a good chance some long lost photos of mine might also be uploaded to those accounts... the thing is, I cannot remember the passwords for the life of me.
Is there a way to view a list all the files in a directory, and see what's on there, without logging in? I know that some websites bring it up automatically, but is there a way to actually do it?
I really should know the answer to this... *shame* hehe.
Re: Website Directory Question
They are still there. And they're hilariously bad. I was so lame haha.
Re: Website Directory Question
Yeah, but the email accounts I used back then are no longer valid and I stupidly thought there was no way I'd ever forget my password so the answer to my secret question was always something like "sdfkhsoiuhefuiohiouhsi9eyf97" ::)
I've tried and tried everything, but I cannot get into the accounts. I can access the websites, I just wanna find out if there's other files in the directory.
Re: Website Directory Question
E-mail them. It's surprisingly effective.
Re: Website Directory Question
I still have a geocities from when I was in highschool. I closed the email account associated with it a long time ago, and forgot the site was there. But I found it again when I googled myself. (Yes, I'm such a loser I googled myself) I can only assume that yahoo closes these accounts after some time, but I have no idea how to access it if you don't know the password. You may want to email a geocities admin about it. Good luck!
Re: Website Directory Question
darcy, i think you're looking for an "index" type of page. where all the files are still listed via text-wise?
i'm not sure geo-cities even actively supports that format anymore (to the public). i thought they slowly weeded all that out (waaay after their yahoo buyout) when they went with the yahoo purty-gui file manager.
like mentioned, you can try to contact an admin on their site-builder forums (http://messages.yahoo.com/). maybe they can quiz you on some ID unlock info (maiden name, dob, etc.). not sure if they would do that though. hth
Re: Website Directory Question
Darcy, when you have a front page that comes up, you're a lot more secure than you think since that speaks directly on port 80 and the ONLY way you can see something that is on the site is if it addressed, somehow, through the sites index page.
Example: if you have an www.darcyaussie.com/index.html than unless you have a link to http://www.darcyaussie.com/gettingho...mrchristopher/ that can be reached SOMEHOW through index.html than the only way to access it is directly.
But there is ONE other way, some OLD webservers allow listing in their directory permissions this means the site CAN be spidered. Really simple process.
Now, if you want to throw the links my way I can spider the site for you and show you what's available should someone else do the same, or I can teach you how to spider the sites.
Up to you. Simple either way.
Re: Website Directory Question
You do know that even if you delete everything people can still pull it up if it's been saved to the 'holy internet archives of doom'? My partner found my DEFUNCT completely gone website from some stupid archive and even got my old drawings. :x
Re: Website Directory Question
Did you try replacing the http in the url with ftp? For instance,
ftp://myoldwebsite.com
You might be able to list the contents of the directory that way, but you will not be able to work with them without the username and password.
Mast or Darcy--I administer a website for my church that was started by someone else using Front Page. I administer it now using Mozilla most of the time and Tex-Edit when I need to code directly in html. There are a bunch of directories the previous guy made for practice, and I've deleted all the files from them, but I am unable to delete the directories. I get an error message back that the directory is not empty, but it is. Any suggestions how to do this? I guess it is not hurting anything, but it irritates me.
Also, Front Page put a lot of code into the web pages that seems meaningless to me. For instance, it will have a *strong* tag and a */strong* tag (where * stands for < or >) with nothing between, not even a space. It seems to me all this extra html would slow down the page loading, but I haven't dared delete it because I am afraid it might actually be doing something that I can't see. What do you think?
