Now he's out on his ass, and I know why

Ricky Williams, dumbest person on the planet

Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
yeah, they should let him be. it's not illegal to test positive. just against the nfl policy.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
I can't believe him. He gave up his position with one of the best football teams to go live in a tent in India and smoke pot. Now, given a second opportunity he screwed that up. Probably better that way, it seems the rest of the players weren't too happy with him for skating out on them like that. What a fucd up unit he is. I think maybe he lost a few tiles upon reentry.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Maybe I'm very open to people expressing their opinions. Defiance is a way to do that. If he wants to take the money he has and just stick with that, get kicked off, that's up to him.
I wish most of us could afford to make such powerful statements. I do think it's wrong he lied though.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
The thing is, if I am not mistaken, is that he is not wealthy, and in fact he owes the Dolphins a shitload of money.

I copied this from the link in OP:
"During Williams' premature retirement in 2004, the Dolphins were awarded an $8.6 million judgment against Williams for breach of contract. Williams still owes the Dolphins the money, but the franchise has not moved to collect it. Williams is slated to earn the minimum $710,000 for seventh-year players this season."
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
heh. now that song is stuck in my head... THANKS A LOTTTT MR HYYYYDE ! ;D
cuz he got high, cuz he got high...
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Yeah, really^! Let's go run to M.H.'s club & sing it to drive him nutz.
I thought you may be talkin' about Joe Francis..
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Man, that guy is seriously addicted! He must be pretty troubled to piss on his contract.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Ricky Williams suffers from some sort of society anxiety disorder. He used to do post-game interviews with his helmet on to help cope with the locker room chaos, and these people often self-medicate with marijuana to lessen their anxiety. The guy is smart, introspective, and shy and gets vilified for making a decision that few would have the guts to make because it involves large sums of money.
Why do people make value judgements on someone else's situation and label them stupid or f*ed up when all it does is expose your own desire or belief that money is the key to a happier life? Were you as critical of Pat Tillman? Ricky made the decision to be true to himself. He lost the desire to play football and went off to pursue things that interested him, and if not for the judgement award of $8.6 mil, would not be attempting to return.
30 years ago there were only a couple of players in the NFL at 300 lbs. Now there are 5 or 6 on every team who can outrun all of us here. The penalty for smoking pot vs. the inability of the league to prevent the use of HGH and steroids among it's players is truly laughable and pathetic.
p.s. I'm not trying to push some sorta pot agenda here, I've only tried it twice and it didn't do much for me.

agreed, I totally give him credit for doing his thing and not giving a shit about whether or not they drug test.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
I'll tell you why I make a value judgment on him...because all he has to do is NOT SMOKE POT and he can make more money in a few years than most people make in a lifetime, playing a GAME.
There are other ways to treat mental disorders than hitting the bong.
And I say this as someone who thinks pot should be legal. But guess what? The NFL says you can't do it. They can make their rules, and all Ricky Williams has to do is abide by them for a years and he'd be a multimillionaire.
So yeah...he's a dumbass. And this latest bit of news exemplifies it...all he had to do was pass a drug test and he was back in.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Ricky Williams signed a contract and was supposed to abide by it. He let down his teammates and the NFL by his choice to do something that is clearly against policy. He could've waited until his contract was over and found another way to cope with his anxiety. I think it was very self serving of him.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Social anxiety disorder can be really debilitating. I have this problem and (sorry to say) often resort to pot.
Although it is technically not physically addictive, people with our SAD can become emotionally addicted to it.
I think most recent drug test indicates the degree of his disorder more so than his appreciation for weed.
Instead of
"He loves weed enough to ruin his career"
I think it's really
"His social anxiety is so severe his coping mechanism destroyed his career"
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Fuck football, fuck stupid anti-pot rules, fuck anyone getting paid millions to play a game, for that matter. I don't have much sympathy for him, but I have no sympathy whatsoever for the promoters of what is hardly a sport anymore, but rather a hyped-up big business spectacle, contrived from the get-go.
Marijuana is far less harmful than alcohol in terms of health problems, monetary losses to society due to the cost invoked by the consequences of abuse (most notably property damage and loss of productivity), and death rate due to abuse. In fact to compare the two in terms of negative effects is a joke.
Is he an idiot to turn down millions in (relatively) easy money just for taking a little bong hit now and then? Maybe. Is it an idiotic rule? Of course it is. You can rape your groupies without fear of consequences, cut off your ex-wife's head for trying to have a life of her own, but god forbid you have a toke off a joint.
Can you imagine anyone getting suspended for having a beer? Same goddamned difference...
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
^^^^^That's true. I thought they had the policy because they care about the welfare of the guys but it's obvious they don't based on how they treat them overall.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
If not for the judgement against him, you wouldn't even hear his name in the news. He'd be off pursuing things that interest him, holistic medicine, yoga, personal growth, all that eastern philosophical, self actualization stuff, not out buying Lamborghinis and bling and "making it rain" at the local SC with his posse. The guy is "other-directed" and because he gave up an opportunity to make large sums of money, people, to whom wealth is their perception of happiness and fulfillment, feel free to place their values on him and dismiss his priorities as not being valid. Just because he can carry a football doesn't mean he has to carry a football.
As far as the NFL and the treatment of it's players goes, the union has basically capitulated to the owners since the last strike to continue the massive revenue stream generated by tv contracts. There are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. You can't complain about him walking away from a contract he signed, when the team could decide they no longer like him and can cut him, regardless of the number of years he has remaining on his contract. E.G. A player signs a 6 year contract for, say, $24 million. He gets 5 mil upfront as a bonus and his salary for the first 2 years is $750,00. Year 3 thru 6 it escalates to an average of $4+ mil a year. The team can cut him after year 2 and owes him nothing else, so, you see, an Nfl contract is made to be broken, but just by one side. If the player quits after year 2, he must repay the pro-rated balance of his signing bonus. Hardly equitable.

For that matter, he could very well belong to this group of people,
http://www.hsperson.com/
I belong to this group myself, but my problems are primarily physiological, not emotional (i.e., I've never been fond of loud noise, flashing lights, etc.). Those who have more physiological effects than emotional are probably better off, if only slightly.
Another author other than Dr. Aron perhaps gave a better explanation of this trait. The analogy was the more extroverted 80% of the population, when confronted with a rattlesnake ready to strike, will either flee or do whatever they have to do to kill the snake.
Those who belong to the 20% HSP group, however, are much more likely to simply "freeze."
If he does indeed belong to this group, there would be many, many downsides to playing professional football. Crowd noise at a game, post-game interviews, etc.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Be that all as it may, he signed a contract, took millions of dollars in exchange for playing football, quit, and when he was told he had to repay the money, and all he had to do was not smoke pot and play football...
he smoked pot.
Dumb rule? Yes.
Dumb person? Most definitely.
Re: He used to make a million bucks a year...then he got high...
Right on Mr. Hyde. All he ahd to do was make good on his end of the contract he agreed to sign, then he could've went and smoked pot like a chimney and done yoga until he turned into a circle. Instead he let fown the organization and his fans. He had an obligation because he chose it, just like how he chose to smoke pot when it is against the rules. 'Nuff said.
