If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
I was watching Firefly, and I love Inara. Inara is a Companion, which is a highly trained courtesan with high status who serves the social elite. They do sell sex, but they still command great respect because they give many other services, such as ego massage. They receive rigorous education and training, and are licensed.
I know that this is a stretch, that we're not prostitutes, and that a lot of us got into it because it's quick money without education required, but wouldn't it be nice if strippers were trained and treated like Companions? We'd be like courtesans, geishas, tayu, hetairae. We'd be respected as companions and entertainers, and most of all, educated women. It's better than the coke-sniffing, deadbeat boyfriend-supporting, slutty party animal stereotype.
Daydream...

Heehee I love Firefly. Watch Serenity!

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
and yet, in the world of firefly, there are non-companion prostitutes, and they don't make as much, and nobody respects them in any regard...
class divisions, much?

I have always thought of myself as a beautiful, intelligent woman who men respect and admire for my classy style and charm and my ability to converse about any topic with an educated and creative viewpoint. And then there's the way I go about giving a rock hard boner, they enjoy that as well.;)
The trick is believing those things about yourself, and making them true. It takes a little talent, but mostly it takes practice. Keep updated on current events and a variety of topics, and be ready for intelligent discourse. Don't ever feel inferior to the man you are talking to, even if he's a brain surgeon. And never feel inferior to the other dancers around you. Always give the impression of confidence, but not arrogance. Men will be impressed by that because they aren't expecting it from an entertainer. And the right men will pay well for the privilege of your company.
If only we had a higher class club in this town where that type of dancer could flourish........but I digress....
-
Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
that type of dancer can only flourish if there is an underclass of dirty girls to make her look suitably high-class in comparison.
courtesans don't replace the crack whores, only offer a supplement to them for men who require both and also all ranges in between.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
I am. I have a bachelor of psychology and I am about to graduate from law school. I was raised in an upper middle class family and I think I'm as classy as they come.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
Watch Dangerous Beauty... If only it were like that still. ... At least the entertaining part, heh

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
of course you think that, you've chosen to slum it and you can't align yourself with the more likely backgrounds strippers come from even in aus.
i hate when this wistful discussion comes up among sexworkers precisely because it misses the point, which is that a select class of sexworkers can only be 'courtesans' if a large majority are NOT.
just like in the non-sexwork world, the upper classes of sexdom are not, unless they have a poor majority to be superior to.

I guess I'm missing what you are getting at. I think it's great that some of us enjoy the role of companion, courtesan, geisha, etc., after all, it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. That doesn't mean that we feel superior to those who have a different take on the job.
There are always going to be different classes, it doesn't matter what kind of work you do. That is just how life works, and I think it's a good thing. Socialism is a highly flawed ideal and not one I'd want to partake of.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
that isn't what I mean at all..I think that the way "courtesans" used to be treated is completely different from now. They were valued for their mind, not just their bodies.. This happens in the club, but mostly just rarely.. Courtesans were encouraged to learn and use their minds, not just their bodies to entertain.
It's all great to say you do that now, but the majority of the guys that come in seem to be more interested in the lap dance you might give than your thoughts on philosphy.

Yeah, the majority are there for the lapdance, but being interesting and educated can only work to your advantage. After all, there are occasions when men come in and enjoy the dances and the company of a lovely woman. If you have both talents then that's just all the more success you will have at work.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
there are women with a courtesan role in sexwork, and they are if anything treated better than haetaras were in the olden days.
but there was never a valuing of mind only. anyone who says otherwise is lying. it was always also about the sex0rs and secondarily about the mind.
also, and this is why i get all angried up in the blood-- there was never any time in history when the majority of sexworkers were adored for their minds primarily or at all. it was always a small minority, usually though not exclusively slumming daughters of the upper classes-- just like the present day, go figure.
girls who daydream about customers loving their conversation and that being most customers are being, well, silly.
basically, by definition, most dancers cannot serve a courtesan role in a club, not even in a show club. so if a dancer is serving that role, she is necessarily relying on others to be unclassy so that her role can even exist.

I completely agree with this, and these guiys turn into my favorite customers and tend to come back. But--> there's always a but <-- I have been ridiculed for "talk too much" or a "college girl" and the like.. I try to have a simple conversation with some and they either stare off into space until their hear lap dance or will listen to me for a while, chime in every once in a while and then act offended and call me a gold digger if I ask if they would like a dance because all dancers are after is money.. <<-- well, it is our job.
I love it when I am able to entertain guys with my social skills as well as my dancing, I just wish it were more common place and that that's what MOST of the guys were coming in for, not just pudding in their pants.

but then again, aren't we all trying to stand out from the rest? It could be pole tricks, sex tricks, or conversation, hell I know a few contortionists.. we all need to stand out in some way to get noticed.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
Well personally I would rather the customer just have a lap dance and not talk to me. I am not interested in conversation when ITC. I reserve that for my friends and other people outside the club who I choose to speak to not while ITC because I am there to earn the most I can in the time I am there. Since we have no CR at my club guys generally dont pay for our time to chat and I am quite happy with that.

No, she's implying that you think you are better than the other girls. As if any of the guys would actually want to have a conversation with us silly girls.::)

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
How did she get that from my post?
The OP said "if strippers were high class, educated courtesans..."
I was simply saying that I am. I didn't mention anyone else.
There are many intelligent and classy women that I work with.
Her reasoning is flawed anyway. You can not only be classy if everyone else is not. I would say 80-90% of the women at my club are classy - it's a classy, gown club. The tacky girls are in the minority.

Jesus, how did this trainwreck happen? I was simply daydreaming aloud.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
And she also said, "girls who daydream about customers loving their conversation and that being most customers are being, well, silly."
I'm guessing that means she thinks we are "silly" if we think any customers actually enjoy having conversations with us. After all, I already said they are there primarily for the dances and even made a joke about giving boners.
I think the idea that some of us believe we are more than just tits and ass bothers her.

I'd like to know that too. Miabella seems to be the only one who disagrees/dislikes this line of thinking. I, personally, thought it was a cool topic and one that I can relate to. Not sure why she's so offended by it.

you're right and maybe there is a reason why there is no gender ribbon next to her name.

Re: If strippers were high-class, educated courtesans...
I loved Serenity, but not as much as I would have loved several seasons of character development and adventures.
Oh yeah, did I mention that I'm a geisha? My name is Madame Bootiefly.
