*rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
Im SO frustrated! i have had a bunch of recommendations for cleaning people, and finally chose an older woman who's been doing it for years. well, each time she's come, there's been crap (dust, dirt) on the floor after she leaves! i have an old victorian home, so dust gathers rather quickly on the hardwood floors. AND she's cleaned something totally trivial, like for example i have this cutesy candle arrangement in my bathroom, with little glass stones surrounding them. well, the first day she came she spent a long time WASHING the stones... :O so i told her the next time that i really only wanted the basics, floors, cabinets, surfaces, etc. but each time, she comes really early in the AM (im still asleep usually) so i let her in and go back to sleep for a bit. when i get up i end up pointing out what she's missed, so she goes back and does it, of course first giving me excuses as to how she did that and there shouldnt be dust still there. but obv there is if i see it!
so i think, ok, the only way to deal with this is to write a list (i typed it) of what i wanted done, exactly. today was tough, i couldnt fall asleep til really really early in the morning, aka 10 am! she came at 955 am, started cleaning, woke me at 1 so she could get my room and leave by 2. well i get up just now, and there's dirt, dust and hair all over the bathroom floor! WTF! what did i pay for?? so i am pissed, really annoyed. i call her, i tell her that im really disappointed and i feel taken advantage of. she tsks me and tells me how she's been cleaning houses all her life and she cleans my house like hers. so i think, well yours must be disgusting heh. but i say, well im sure you can understand my frustration as i can understand yours, but if you were here you'd see what i'm seeing. she continues to tell me that im essentially just wrong and imagining things etc. uhhh helloooo biatch, im standing in dirt! did you just twiddle your thumbs while i slept and watch some tv? i dontgetit!
so i tell her, in the end, that i was just hoping to correct it for the future. she's really upset now, saying that im not right etc. i say look im sorry to have disturbed you but i felt i should be honest with you. we can fix this in the future. so we hang up. im even MORE frustrated then because apparently the dust and dirt i feel on my feet walking around, up and down stairs just doesn't exist. apparently it's in another plane and im just fucking DOnnie Darko feeling the two planes coexisting. because i must be a looney for doubting her work. GAHHHH!
/end rant.
so, apparently this is a difficult task. if any of you have cleaning ladies/services/men, how did you find them? im soooo beyond belief frustrated. *le sigh*

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
I've always felt that the best way to make sure a thing is done right is to do it myself, and that goes triple for cleaning. No one cleans my house the way I like it but me. It doesn't really take that long to do it yourself, after all, and I really enjoy cleaning and taking care of my home.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
They are very hard to find not that I can afford one but my Grandma had one for years . It seems lately anyone I call to do any jobs around my house do shit jobs - times are changing . (So now I start when I was a kid rant LOL )- I mowed lawns for a $1.00 and worked my ass off in my early days ! :O I think you may have to work through a few to get the quality you deserve .

A little off topic, but the representitive for my insurance company actually called me "mama" over the phone, as in look mama....
Am I the only one believes that if you have a job like that it may be a good idea to lose the slang and speak like a semi intelliegent professional

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
Oh yeah sorry the Tylonal PM is kicking in, Chrissy try to find one of those local newspapers - Newsgleaner, or Northeast time and they should list cleaning people. Another option is to call your local rectory (as in catholic church) they have a list of people they can recomment for stuff like that

The girl that cleaned my old house was a speedfreak. It would take a while to get it done but the place was fucking spotless and shining. Not that I recommend you get a crank-smokin maid. Just sayin.....

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
I've been through about 8 cleaning places. I think that the cleaning people should clean as well as I would. I don't have the time to clean like that anymore...so I do the basic cleaning every day and these people were supposed to come in once a week and deep clean...should be pretty easy. But, they would never do a good job.
I kept finding dust on stuff...not a lot, though...and would bitch and complain. HOWEVER, I called to complain about it at one of the companies and the guy suggested that I get my vents/furnace/air system cleaned. At first I got pissed off because I thought he was being an ass...but then he explained that the vents should be cleaned once a year...blah, blah, blah. So, I did that...and wouldn't you know that it solved most of my problems? I now have a cleaning lady who comes once every other week for a deep cleaning. She only cleans 8 houses a month (for extra money) and does an awesome job. I think it did help that I had the vents cleaned though...because things don't seem as dirty now.
My lady is not bonded or insured. Of course, I do not have anything of value laying around my house that would be easily accessible. All of the fragiles/valuables are put away and we don't leave money laying around anywhere that anyone else would know about it. I feel safe to have someone come in and clean and not take anything that is precious to me. I have this older mexican lady who comes and she's awesome.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
get recommendations from an apartment complex for their prep people (who do the thorough reletting cleanings). cleaners like that will charge a bit more, but they will leave your apartment or house looking extremely clean.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
My grandmother had a similar problem with her cleaner, this little old lady named Annie. She cleaned my aunts' house as well (my grandmother's sister) and she did it for over 25 years, so she was more like a family friend than anything else. My mom and one of my aunts were in Annie's daughter's wedding, even. But towards the end, Annie was getting so old she was doing a terrible job cleaning. She would do the laundry and wipe everything down and that was basically it. My grandparents hated to fire such an old friend, so they would pay her to come every other Thursday and then have the Merry Maids come out every other Friday.
Annie finally retired from cleaning after an injury, so now they just have the Merry Maids come. They always do a good job, but they have done things like run the vacuum over the cable to the massage chair (so it had to be replaced) and they don't do the laundry like Annie did. But overall my grandparents are satisfied with them.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
i think that's the issue yekh, that she's too old for this job. when emily and i were driving home from AC last night she mentioned that if it was a normal person who did the job well they wouldn't have argued it, and toldme that i was wrong. they would have asked, where is the dust? but no, this woman argued to the death that i was wrong. and now i think i really HAVE been taken advantage of. i keep finding more and more things she didnt clean. grrrr.
i think i am going to find someone like VG suggests, that's the goal at least. and fwiw i dont have vents or anything to get cleaned. i wish it were only that easy lol.
although, the speedfreak idea isn't a bad one hahaha.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
well, being in florida, and surrounded by them, I try to find a nice 30ish illegial alien.... they're good, not to young, not too old, they are usually like 10$ an hour or so (I've paid up to 15$, but 10-12 is quite common)).... and they take cash, appreciate it, and do the BEST! work.
oh, and they NEED the job, so they'll never steal.
-
Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
that's what em said to do.. but i wonder... how can i advertise for that?
"wanted: illegal alien to clean my house. preferably in the 30's age range."
heh, if i was an illegal immigrant i'd never reply lol. how can i find that Lola dahling?

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
Have you ever used Angie's list? I can let you peep my account if you've never tried it. We literally find everything from manicurists to landscapers there.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
really? what's that? i'd like to take you up on that offer..

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
I can't imagine philly has as many illegals as Vegas, but here, there is this one certain bus stop that all the Mexican's hang out at, waiting to be hired for labor. All you do is go to this bus stop, and say, hey, I need someoen to do work for me, and I'll pay 50 bucks. Pick up the dude, bring him home, he does the job and you drop him back off at the bus stop. Kinda funny...but it works. We picked up someone to help us move a few weeks ago.
Dont know if they are trustworthy, I'd never leave them alone, but they do seem to work hard.
We are currently lookign to hire a little spanish lady to clean our house once a week.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
angieslist.com is a site for consumers to find reputable professionals who provide services in their area. You can look up just about any kind of professional--home improvement and repair, childcare, to party planners and manicurists. Members submit reviews for each company/service provider they patronize, so you can read a list of reviews from real customers.
We've had great luck with it.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
For anyone who works in an office building or is close to someone who does: we have a cleaning crew at night that the building's holding company hires. I got to know one of the ladies, Carmen, by chatting with her in spanish. She lives down the street and will clean the place for $50. Unfortunately I have not taken her up on the offer because this place is so gross I'm ashamed to have anyone over.
But its an idea, she is really sweet and I am sure she could do better than my lazy ass. Knowing spanish helps.

Re: *rant* is it so damn hard to find good cleaning person?!
that's a good idea Kat. but i am nowhere near an office bldg, otherwise good idea.
as for Angie's List... lemme just say Dottie recommended something VERY good. i actually went into her account, figured out how it worked and liked what i saw so much that i made my own acct! so worth it! now im sitting here checking through a huge list of cleaners and seeing what other ppl's experiences as been.
once again, SW to the rescue :)
