self tanner on pale skin - help!
I did a search b ut couldnt find an answer...
I have pale skin which is pretty pink and frekles are my middle name. So to have an overall tan It would look weird is only my arms and face have freckles but the rest does not. So that is one problem but the other one is that my skin is very pink and all self tanners I've ever used seem to make me kinda yeller... anyone have any suggestions? i dont want a dark tan, but I don't want to be blinding in sunlight either (at the beach or pool or whatever)
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
I've had luck with Mystic, but that's a fairly dark tan. The Jergens gradual tanner stuff works for just a hint of color. Past that, I have no clue! I have the same type of skin as you, and usually stuff comes out looking orange on me.
Maybe someone else can give us both a clue!
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
see I'm using the cvs knock off jergins stuff and it's showing up, but like only inside, when I go outside I blind myself... Maybe I should get the stuff for darker skin tones and it will show up. I tried the dove stuff too and it was streaky and yellow... What is mystic? a spray? professionally done? I'mma go look it up...
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
Yeah, it's a spray booth tan. There's tons of threads on here about it. It's the only thing that ever really gave me a dark tan that wasn't streaky, orange, or otherwise weird looking.
It even made most of my freckles blend! It's so weird.
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
just checked it out... trying to find a place near me and cost... I might have to try this scheize (sp?) out... I am interested.... but yeah I hope people comment with other suggestions too!!
whoa made your frekles blend... weird.
So when you use it do you cover your hair? does it get in your ears? wear lipbalm? I dont want it on my tattoo, do I have to cover it with something?
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
try bronzer as opposed to fake tan (i'm presuming you want the colour for work here...)
you can get bronzers which are almost like body makeup (but more gel-like)-they're great if you just want the effect for work and come right off with a bit of soap in the shower. NARS do one, which is very expensive, uh not sure of US brands but most of those girly packaged makeup companies (MOR, stilla, Benefit, chichi) seem to do one. Use tow coats and don't moisturize before hand or it just slides off.
OR most theatre makeup companies (Backstage, Krayola) do a light body makeup which you can have custom blended to whatever shade you like-its quite easy to apply-goes on with this cool body sponge thing (they use this stuff for photo shoots) and you set it with a light dusting of talc and a BIG brush.
OR if your set on fake tan, alot of companies do lighter versions of their tan for pale skin. Clarinis, Ambre Solaire and Neutrogena all do home ones or you can get the mositurizer with fake tan in it and build it up over the course of a week-suprisingly, the colour is actually really beautifull. Try Johnson and Johnson (not good though if you have very sensitive skin), Dove (which is great and available in special formula for really fair skin), Clarinis and Lancome also do excellent ones if your up for spending a bit more. The moisturizer one is pretty fool proof-as long as you make sure you wash your hands its impossible to stuff up.
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
hmm... Well yeah I'm not actually talking about itc, more in natural light, such as the sun... I dont want to actually tan because I dont want to fade my tattoo, as I have put a lot of money into it and want it looking tip top for as long as possible... but thank you, that was very helpful xtina!! The dove stuff doesnt work for me though, I know that for sure... /:
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
If I were you, I'd try mystic tan. I liked the color I got from it. It doesn't sound like I'm as pale as you, but the color was good on me. Usually I look orange with fake tan lotions. They give you a shower cap type of thing to cover your hair. Some places give you goggles for your eyes, mine doesn't so I just close them. They give you a lotion to put on your dry spots (elbows, knees, nail bed, fingers) so that they don't soak up too much lotion. USE THAT STUFF LIBERALLY, ESPECIALLY ON YOUR FINGERS. Learn from my mistakes......seriously.
If you feel weary about how the color will look, try to do it a day or two before you have any plans. Also, just a warning, I don't like the way the colors fades. I kept myself moisturized afterwards, and the colors lasted almost a full week. But when it started to faded, it faded in spots....little tiny spots. It looked really embarassing. but I heard that it doesn't really happen to girls that keep it up and go regularly to touch up their tan.

Very true. I used the gradual color lotion in between sprays, and it worked really well. Also, I had a unlimited sprays for $70/month. It is a bit more expensive than regular tanning, but to me it's worth it if you can't or don't tan in a regular tanning bed.
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
I'm really pale too and the only brands I found that won't turn me orange are Sun
or Fake Bake (I like the spray but I can't find a link to it)
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
Oh...one more thing. If you do decide to do Mystic, wear a nose filter or bring a cotton ball to stuff in your nose!
I thought I could just hold my breath when I went in there, but as soon as the cold spray hit my body and I inhaled a bunch of the spray. It was not cool! I had cotton mouth for the rest of the day! Bleh!
The first time might not turn out so great, but you'll learn extra places where you need to put the blending cream. I have to put some around my navel and between my boobs or I get a weird dark streak.

OMG - YES on the nose thing!!!!! I inhaled so much of that crap by accident....I swear I could smell it for 2 weeks!!! The funny thing is, I DID put a little bit of rolled up paper towels in my nostrils, only to take them out and say to myself "Nah .....I'll just hold my breathe, it's only 6 seconds"
Yeah, the longest 6 seconds ever imaginable when the cold mist comes flying out at you!
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
The Mystic tan always comes off of me in like 3 -4 days. I exfoliate first and everything. How do y'all get it to stay on longer than that?
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
I used the gradual tanner lotion, which helped a bit. When I had unlimited sprays (on the monthly package), though, I used it every 3-4 days. I don't think they're really telling the truth when they say it'll last 7 days. That's the mean reason why I don't think I'd ever buy a spray package that only gives you a certain number of sprays again. It's better if you get unlimited sprays because you can do it as many times as you'd like, which is how I kept my color!
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
ooo i loooove pale chicks. pink and pale is fuckin slammin in my opinion.
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
^^ I like pale chicks too, but I always feel uncomfortable at the beach when I take off me shorts and t shirt and look like I crawled out from under some rock. I dont want to be dark tan, but have a healthy glow... if that makes sense...
Anyway to the ladies who've done the mystic tan, did any of you use Palm Beach Tanning salons? I cannot for the life of me find prices for that place online... do they have a monthly package? I want to do this, but at the same time i am a cheapo and really do not want to fork over a whole buncha cash... if they do have a monthly package how many months is the minimum that you have to sign up for? Where are the spots that you found you needed the blending lotion? Were you totally exfoliated and moisturized when you went in?
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
I went to a few places in Hollywood and another in Thousand Oaks (and I think they forgot the put the color in the spray because it did absolutely nothing at that one). Is Palm Beach Tanning a chain or something? From what I hear they are pretty much all the same. They give you a choice of 3 settings - I always get the darkest one.
Anyway you are just supposed to exfoliate really well but do NOT moisturize before you go in. They should give you a lotion to use on your palms and the bottoms of your feet so that it blocks the spray from getting to parts you don't want to be tan. You wear a shower cap type thing for your hair and then pat dry all the excess spray with a towel when you get out. The backs of my legs were the most streaky, so try to distribute the excess all over your legs.
Moisturize afterwards - but I saw no serious difference in whether or not I did or didn't. It still wears off after 3 - 4 days. Whatever you do, DON'T soak in a tub or pool with the Mystic tan. It will peel off in gross chunks.

So the lotion totally keeps the spray off, or it just kinda lessens the affects? I want to keep it from getting on my tattoo... And chunks... ew.
Re: self tanner on pale skin - help!
The lotion almost totally keeps the spray off - it's supposed to be a special spray-blocking type of lotion though (I forget what the chemical name of the spray is but it blocks that specifically). They also tell you to stand/pose in certain positions to avoid getting your palms sprayed.
