Alternatives to caffeine?
I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, triggered by caffeine. I'm also working and in nursing school, which means that I need some sort of jumpstart. If I drink energy drinks, soda, or coffee (coffee is the worst), I'll get painful, crampy, acidic diarrhea.
Any alternatives or suggestions?

I have the same kind of IBS too and I tried that 5 hour energy that Kaylinn suggested and it worked great without any problems. It's in a little red bottle that you can find in most Walgreens.

I drank 1/2 of a bottle this morning, and THEN found out that it contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. Not only did I morph into Cornholio, but I also blew out the plumbing.

wow. I have a sensitive GI tract too with the IBS and all, and it didn't do it to me. Huh.

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
Vitamin C! Totally. I discovered that when I was a P.A. on overnight shoots and the caffeine wasn't working. A megadose of vitamin C will not only wake you up, but it's a better kind of wakefulness (not that jittery, propped-up sensation you get from caffeine). It also lasts longer and you don't crash off it. 1000 mg of vitamin C will do the trick (if not, try 2000 mg, it won't hurt you) or you can drink .

Edit to add- guarana and mu huang...can be found at health food stores...Do not take too much
Frequent exercise and eating on time plus healthy snacks will keep your energy level "copacetic"

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
When I was in the miltary, and I worked graveyard shifts, I would drink Arizona Green Ginseng Tea. Ginseng is a natural energy booster, and the tea is much healthier than soda. It tastes really good, too. ;)

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
Oh, speaking of Cornholio, I did need TP for my bunghole after that IBS attack.
Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
I would always have a couple red bulls at work and they would make my stomach turn and feel all constipated. I didn't know such a condition existed, but that is probably what I have too. Now I just try to fit in more sleep whenever I can. I still drink caffeinated drinks, but sparingly.

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
My tattoo teacher recommended something called Yerba Mate (sp?). Apparently it gives you lots of energy. If that fails, there's always meth. ;)
-
Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
I've tried Yerba Mate also (mateine is the "active ingredient" I think), because I /hate/ coffee. Apparently, it should stimulate me, etc - but it doesn't seem to have much effect. Nor, for that matter, does caffeine (if I force myself to drink coffee).
I found my Yerba Mate in a Lebanese store - a lot of Lebanese went to South America, and it spread back into Lebanon apparently, so that's another source if you don't find a South American store.

Hehehehe, my friend's mom attended nursing school in the 80s, and got her doc to prescribe her some amphetamines so she could keep up! Dammit, we are no longer in those times.

Ginseng is awsome, however the tea has caffeine in it.

Re: Alternatives to caffeine?
I recently drank an energy drink so I could write this damn paper, and I'd just like to say the following:
"I am Cornholio! I need TP for my bunghole! Where I come from, we worship the almighty bunghole. Arrarararararararar Are you threatening me? I demand TP for my bunghole!"
