Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
I'm planning on buying a desktop computer for a couple relatives by the end of this year and I need to purchase one that is more about the point & click interface (these people speak primarily Spanish and typing on an English phonetic keyboard would only hamper them...one is a middle aged guy with huge knarly hands and the other is a four year old :D.)
I also need a laptop for myself but something than can take a beating, like the laptops designed for wildlife biologist in the field.
Thank you very very much for any advice. All is appreciated. :D
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
You can order Spanish language keyboards and set up the computer to be able to switch back to English as well.
Windows XP is fairly point and clicky, as are Macs. Macs are definitly more picture based.
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
For multimedia work, you can't beat a Mac. The new dual core Intel based Macs can run Mac OS X, Windows, and UNIX simultaneously in different windows. You can switch the language to Spanish through a control panel (on the Mac side anyway. On the PC side, it is just a little more complicated, but not that difficult.)
For multimedia, max out the RAM as much as you can afford, and get the biggest hard drive possible.
This is the one I'd buy if I could afford it: http://www.apple.com/macpro/
BTW, if you or any of your family are students or teachers, you qualify for special education discounts at Apple.
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
i wouldnt recommend a mac unless it was for a graphic artist.
if these people dont know what they are doing, Good Luck in finding anyone who is even familiar with troubleshootng them and giving them any advice. not to mention, lack of available software products and driver compatibilities.
most places have educational discounts, just have to ask!

The new Intel based macs run Windows, so softwre is not an issue.
And Macs are so reliable that troubleshooting is usually not an issue.

Yet its usually Windows that is the culprit in most computer failings. So I fail to see how a Mac running Windows wouldn't have the same problems as a PC (which going by hardware PC and the latest Macs are very similar).
So you are saying that a Mac running Windows will actually be easier to troubleshoot Windows than a PC running Windows.
Now if Windows is the problem does it really matter at all?
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
so youre paying 3x + as much for a spiffier case?
sorry i dont get it.
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
I have to disagree on Windows being the culprit in most computer failings. Windows has to make itself work with a ridiculous number of hardware manufacturers, Macs are all in-house and the same company. PCs are about 9 times more widespread. If they have 9 times more bugs, that's not really "more." The two are not playing in the same league. It's like me acing a 6th grade math test and making fun of someone who got an A- on their master's thesis.
Re: Best Multimedia Desktop Computer Set-Ups
Unless you are building a computer yourself, the majority of PCs out there to flat out buy have been extensively tested to run with Windows (XP that is, Vista still has too many bugs to be run on anything as of yet for my tastes to be as stable as XP for me).
When I received my Alienware I was very pleased with the level of quality assurance and how well Windows works with it. Which can be argued that it will run equally as good as Windows on a Mac.
Therefore if someone buys a Mac with intents of running Windows only, there really is no difference between PC or Mac. It all ends up being fanboyism on that issue.
