Re: im and text messaging
well sending SMS' to your phone, I think, requires you to setup the yahoo mobile software on your PC. AIM is the only one, to my understanding, that will send SMS to your phone. You have to set that up through aol's home setup.
Yahoo USED to have it where, if I sent a yahoo IM it would just forward to txt but you would have to enable that on the your My Yahoo page.
However Yahoo was getting bitched at (and so is aol) by Wireless companies because their users are getting pissed at the txt contents because not all of them have free sms plans.
Both companies (and msn) are moving to a more complete cellphone solution. Like the whole Yahoo Mobile movement. Gets everything on supporting phones.
(Sorry for touching on so much ground, just didn't know what you were attacking at)
At least with the aim mobile sms ability you can still use iCHAT. FireyChat is good if you want a client that does everything though. Free too (well was, I barely use anything but AIM anymore).
Re: im and text messaging
Thank you, Mast!
I have so many dancers that I am in contact with on Friday and Saturday nights that it would be a great help to be able to text directly from my keyboard.
Trying to send a text while my phone is ringing every minute (or less) is next to impossible. My friend suggested using Yahoo IM for sending SMS while continuing to talk on the phone.
I'll check out AIM for that feature. Thanks!:)
Re: im and text messaging
Uh oh, Paris, let me get this right, You want to txt msg from your computer to phones that do not have the IM clients on them. You just want to send plain jane sms to a phone?
(I'm stuck in a plane in detroit due to medical emergency and I'm sweating like a whore in church)
What you want to look for is SMS WIDGET for osx. There is a widget that lets you send txts right from the OSX widget screen (can't remember the proper name right now) I will paste a link when I am on the ground. But yea, don't look for IM msging type things. ALSO www.skype.com lets you send txt msgs as well. I think skype MAY be your best solution.
Re: im and text messaging
This is awesome, thank you!
That would be such a huge help if I could send SMS to dancers while I had customers on the phone.
Re: im and text messaging
Paris do you have the most recent version of yahoo messenger? You ought to be able to send a text message rather easily.
1. The person needs to be in your friends list.
2. Click on their name in the list and a little menu should slid out. From this menu you can send an IM, call, send an e-mail, or a text.
3. Click on the text button of the menu. If you have already entered their cell number in their contact information then you should get a screen where you can compose your text. If you hadn't entered their cell number in their contact information you'll get a prompt for their cell phone number. Put in the number and then you'll get the message screen. Actually I think it first sends a text message to check if the phone is able to receive text messages.
Re: im and text messaging
Hey, that is awesome!
Can this be done with only the phone number? Not too many of my dancer contacts have Yahoo ID's. I was trying to do it via Sprint online, but the person has to also have a sprint phone to get an SMS from me that way.
But the Yahoo IM Text would work great with the people that I text to the most. thank you so much!
Re: im and text messaging
Paris, try typing a cell phone number into the box right above the "Friends" list. The box usually says "type an e-mail address" or "type a telephone number" or "type a yahoo id". If you type a cell phone number into the box a drop down menu should appear. It will say "call phone", "send sms text" & "search the web". Just select "send sms text" and you should be able to send that number a message.

Jannisary is right, it does work for some CELL providers that way. It had in the past, I can't remember if it was a pay service or not, I'm 100% sure it was for all-carrier txting. HOWEVER, I know, yahoo is PLANNING to either charge for it, or use your cell phone via the install of their Yahoo!Mobile (original post) software to continue it for free removing it from verizon servers.
If you look in those links, you'll see links to some free services too.
