Re: Need so much advice....
What's wrong with SAHM? At least its respected.
Re: Need so much advice....
Yes, just say you've been a stay at home mom... why would they ask about your finances? that's none of their business... I've never had a prospective employer ask me about my finances and I've had some pretty sparse resumes myself. And I'm not sure you should be so terrified that they might find out you danced... it might be a problem, but just as likely not.
Re: Need so much advice....
Yeah, stay-at-home mom sounds perfect to me. Your daughter is right about the age when SAHM's start looking to head back to work too, so nobody should think anything of it. In the unlikely event that anyone asks about your financial support, you can tell them you just got divorced and your husband was supporting you up to now.
Re: Need so much advice....
OK, seeing as I havent had a job where I need a resume I didnt know how SAHM would look to potential employers. Thinking they may want someone who had a job.. I dont know... Ill just go that route since its true (except the few weekends a month Im working)
Re: Need so much advice....
Unless you have a friend who owns their own business and will lie for you... I wouldn't recommend lying on your resume. Even if they don't check up on you, it will still probably end up coming out. Sure, you may have to start off closer to the bottom... but it's better than burning the bridges at the top (with the getting caught part).
You have some sort of portfolio of your work, right? It seems like that would make a big difference.
And yea... changing from this line of work to something more mainstream is really scary.
Re: Need so much advice....
Havn't you modeled before Audrey? Not the adult modeling, but something else? Perhaps you can add "print model" to your resume. No one will ask about how you've made money, but you can say you and your SO decided it was best to stay home with the child, and you were able to model on the side without sacrificing time raising your daughter.
Re: Need so much advice....
Well, a resume is not a confessional, but anything made up and not supported is grounds for termination.
Be careful grasshopper.
Re: Need so much advice....
Don't lie on your resume. That could really hurt you at some point. The SAHM is the way to go. Your boyfriend supported you and you raised your daughter and went to school. That is fine.
With no experience you are not going to get a high-end position. It will have to be entry level, but the important thing is that you take that first step towards gaining experience and building a resume. Good luck to you!
If I were interviewing you then SAHM would not hurt you in the least. Lack of experience would DEPENDING on the job. I would still be interested if you displayed potential.
Re: Need so much advice....
Everybody has to start at the bottom. Which means no one is looking for a stellar resume when you first start out. Just get your foot in the door somewhere, dazzle them with the work you do, get your own set of clients, and move on up.
Maybe you can't put it under work experience, but think about any volunteering you might have done, classes you took....all of that means something. And at the end of the day you can always say you were a stay at home mom, but your daughter is grown up now, and you're ready to dig in and start your career. You're just looking for someone to give you a chance.
How do people who just graduated from cosmetology school look for work? They don't have tons stuff on their resume either. It'll work out if you don't give up. Somewhere out there is the place where you're going to get your start.
Re: Need so much advice....
There is no bottom or top when doing hair. Well, there is but I will be starting at the bottom... theres no way to start anywhere else (unless you have a clientel and rent a station) so thats not a big deal....
And I doubt they would check background - I can say I worked for my guy as a admin assistant (hes the big boss) and my mom had a daycare for 6 years (that I did help out at)... the only reason Im debating on putting those down so it shows that I know how to hold a job, show up, etc... ya know? Because no one knows hair when they start out... its not like an office job... your skill is what makes you go up the ladder...
Ahhh... think Ill just put the daycare down (as part time) and then that I went to school... I just want to have SOMETHING on my application... and if they ask anything about anything Ill just say I was with the kid and my boyfriend works... ahhh... we'll see how this goes. Im going out looking for a job on Tuesday - Im actually kinda excited to get a day job... Itll be interesting...
Thanks guys - I feel like a real idiot not knowing how to fill out a stupid application....
Re: Need so much advice....
I meant top = Jose Eber or something
versus bottom = Supercuts, for example
Good luck to you!
Re: Need so much advice....
Oh - def no Supercuts! LOL... Ill pass... Im just looking for a smaller 6-8 station full service salon. Wanting to start off paid $10/hr + tips and be able to switch to commission once my clientel is going better.
BUT I hear theres a salon here - full service salon for MEN called The Head Game which Im thinking would be good for me seeing as Ive been working with men as clientel for years. Not to mention men are so easy to do - cuts, color, etc. They also have mani/pedi, massage and facials for men... Im going to check it out next week.

Don't. This is one of my biggest fears/worries as well. I've stayed up nights thinking about it even.
I think the plan you have is a good one, and since you're going into hair, it should be a lot easier for you (fingers crossed) to slip in.
Good luck!

[quote=AudreyLeigh;1175019]Im so discouraged about getting turned down or getting 'caught' that I keep putting off the job hunt. [quote]
You currently don't have the job...so you have nothing to lose by trying. And unless you try...well, obviously you cannot succeed. Would you rather have the failure by your own choice? Go for it. Why not? Yeah, rejection is not fun. But making your own rejection isn't fun either.

I love the name! That sounds fun. And it seems like an easier transition to work with men, you know? They'd be smart to hire you.
Re: Need so much advice....
I wouldn't lie on your resume. That could just come back to bite you in the butt. But putting SAHM sounds like a good idea. My mom went back to work after years of being a SAHM and one interviewer told her that he has a lot of respect for moms and that it's the hardest job in the world and not to discount it.
Re: Need so much advice....
So, I called a couple salons. Had one interview and they liked me but arent hiring until October (when a girl is leaving). Today I emailed a salon that posted on craigslist. is the salon. Anyway - she called and I told her I havent worked and stayed with my daughter and that my daughter had gymnastics and cheer 3x's a week and she seemed impressed about it. She told me she has 2 kids and juggles work with their school and activities. I mentioned those 3 days I couldnt work past 3 and she was totally fine with it and Im going in Tuesday for a 'real interview'. She said she wanted to see me tomorrow but then called back and I guess her daughter has a 4 day weekend from school so had to make it Tuesday. Wish me luck!!! Im getting a job!!!

Re: Need so much advice....
Best of luck to you!
I agree with the stay at home mom story...which isn't exactly untrue anyhow. GL!
Re: Need so much advice....
Do you have a model so you can show her your work and a portfolio with pictures of work you have done? Those are tools we are being taught to use now and I just start cosmo school in July. Do you have any clients that came to see you at your school you could bring into the picture? I understand salons like it when you have a few followers. What school did you go to BTW?
Re: Need so much advice....
Just wanted to say good luck!!

I dont know why schools try to tell you that this is needed. When you just graduated in June they arent expecting this. The job pays $9/hr+ commission and theyre just regular salons. Now, if I wanted a job at Jose Eber - yea, I would definately need that... BUT you dont even start doing hair there - you start as an assistant and build a portfolio with them.

You must be at Paul Mitchell or Vidal Sassoon... or one of the top schools that feed you that crap... no offense... but its not needed unless you want to freelance or work at a top end salon, in tv, runway, etc

From my experience the chance of someone following you from a school into the 'real world' is about 1000 to 1. I never had friends/family come into the school because I didnt want the school to get their money.

They care about you having a clientel if you are going to rent a booth or are at a higher end salon. The places Im going to are places you get a job to build your clientel because you dont have one other than friends/family.
I had a horribly negative school experience and get upset that they feed us all this crap and then throw us out after treating us like shit for 17 months and $17000 and then when you go for their 'job placement' they wont help you even tho you PAID ALL THIS FREAKING MONEY FOR IT because no ones hiring. Are you f*cking crazy?! EVERYONE is hiring. My school hates me because I called this out on their BS and made them wake up. Lawsuit pending... >:(
Im just trying to move on and get a job.
Re: Need so much advice....
stay at home mom is the best idea.
The was i hide stripping on my resume is i type entertainment. but i have done others as well...
or you could say.. community theater.. hehe
Re: Need so much advice....
We actually run a resume writing business. Definitely don't lie, but you may be able to bend the truth a little to avoid having no work history.
With my resume we contacted a family member that owned a business and asked if they could say I was a part time employee for a number of years. This wasn't really a lie, I did work there a lot during this time, but it was more of a helping out when I was there situation, I wasn't an actual employee.
This kind of thing, even if it is babysitting (which you would list as childcare) can show a stable work history, without listing stripping. The most important thing is not to look like you have jumped from job to job in the past, and not to list a skill that you don't actually have. Oh, and only the last 10 years are important.
HTH!
