Getting music from an old movie...is there a way??
Picture Mommy Dead.

Is a really cool old movie that I like, and I really like the classical background music.
There is no available soundtrack.
Part of me wants to just record it secondarily on a tape recorder! An then convert that tape into a CD!
Has anyone EVER heard of anyone doing anything like this? What is the proper-technology-way to go about this?
I realize this is pretty absurd in the context of a stripper board...but...you never know...:-\

There are times when i have wanted to do the same thing, someone in the know please chime in.

It would take a lot to explain the details, but basically pretty much any PC sound card can be used to record an analog signal and convert it to digital data that can be saved on your PC in various audio formats (from there you could make Audio CDs with a program like Nero, or even use ITunes or MediaPlayer that can make standard audio CDs). You simply need to connect the audio line outs from a DVD player or VCR to the Line-in of the PC sound card, select the line-in to record from, and use a program that can record to wave, or to MP3. A lot of sound cards like Creative sound cards come with something crude that will do the job, or you could even do a basic job with the basic Sound Recorder that comes with Windows.
Where it gets to be more complex is if the background music has voices and sound effects that you want to remove. That's not easy to do as it requires sound processing algolrithms to try and figure out what is voice, what is sound effects, and what is music. While your brain knows what is what, writing a computer program to do it is not trivial. However... while I couldn't tell you off hand what software is available to do that, obviously it can be done because your brain can do it, and simpler versions are common in the form of Karaoke machines that have sound processing software that detects and removes vocals, but not always perfectly.

Whoah, that sounds so cool.
I have a Mac, that's the only thing. (Tho you'd think with a G5 that is made for ppl in the audio/visual business, there would be ways to totally make it happen)
That's what I was thinking of...like some kind of cable to connect from the TV to the computer.

Sorry Alaska. While I know how I'd do it, I'm not a very good or patient teacher when it comes to writing out all of the details you'd need to know.
And yea, while I don't own a Mac, I'd be surprised if it doesn't have an audio line-in jack. Even so, there still a lot of details, like you need to find the right cable to connect the audio out from your VCR or DVD player to connect to the line in jack of your Mac. Just that would take a while to explain unless you already know something about audio cables (in this case, you'd likely need a cable that has right and left RCA male plugs plugs to whatever Mac's have for their line-in jacks. PC sound cards generally use 1/8" mini phone jacks for this, but it's not the only possibility. Incredible amounts of detail can be found here: http://www.teamcombooks.com/mp3handbook/10.htm.
What you want to do is actually relatively simple and doable, but it's the details that would take a long time to explain and where my patience to write it all out is limited ;)
Re: Getting music from an old movie...is there a way??
Well it seems you either need to buy the proper cable to connect vcr player to the audio in line on the computer. or buy the DVD and convert it to mp3. A google search reveals several programs for windows for this and there is also a program that records whatever sounds playing on your computer speakers (less direct),
This may be the right cable?? Stereo audio out to audio in but 4 inches may not be enough.

Re: Getting music from an old movie...is there a way??
space cadet makes a good point. If you can get it on DVD then you can rip the sound track like you would from any CD or DVD, but if it's only available on VCR tape then you'll need the cable and do the analog->digital recording thing.
Re: Getting music from an old movie...is there a way??
One more thought: you said the music is "classical"? I'm wondering, does it list the composer or pieces in the credits? Maybe if the music wasn't specifically written for that film, you can find it elsewhere...?
