What's it like to live in Vegas?
:D I'm thinking of relocating from San Francisco to Las Vegas, temporary to save some money or maybe if I like it - settle down.
From what I've seen so far, apart from the Strip, Vegas seems like a pretty liberal city. I've heard that Henderson and Summerlin are nice, quiet places to live. A major plus is the real estate is less expensive than California.
::) I'm single at the moment and would like to check out the local scene. What are the local men like? What are the plusses and minuses of living in Vegas?
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
I'm having a hard time deciding on where I want to settle as well. Vegas has definitely crossed my mind because of the job, of course.
*le sigh*

Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
The men in Vegas suck. Thank God I moved out here with a nice guy.....the dating scene here is terrible. Bunch of tourists tryin to get laid by crazy tourist girls. Hard to meet local men....but the ones I have met seemed pretty much the same. Tryin to get laid my the tourists.
I like living here....I live in Henderson, it's very nice area, and I like it. What I don't like is...no nature. It's all concrete and casinos. The grass(what little there is) is fake or imported. So are the trees. I miss mudpuddles. It finally rained for like, a week straight after a year of no rain.
The weather is nice. hot, but not humid. Always sunny, hardly never any clouds.
I like that there is alwyas something to do here. We can go out at 5am....and everythign is open and somethign's happening. For young, single people, it's a nice place to live.
Another reason I liek Vegas is because it's very accepting....you will meet people from every part of the world imaginable. It gets annoying becuase you meet a lot of people who don't have a firm rgasp of English..but at the same time, I love how cultrually diverse it is. Along with that...Vegas is very tolerant of all kinds of people, as well as all races. Flaming gays, 20somethign sluts, and butch lesbains...they are all accepted here....not picked on or mistreated. I liek that.....I like that I can go out to a club and see people from all walks of life, and we all get along and can have fun together, even if we are so different.
Cost of living doesn't seem expensive to me...but housing is.
If you live in a nice area, henderson or summerlin, you will pay for it. If you want cheap.....your gonna head into some not very nice areas.
Overall...I like Vegas, and I like the opportunities that are here....
I just miss seeing nature..trees, grass, water.....
You can work whenever you want, for however long you want. You have a possibility of meeting the guy who just hit a slot machien jackpot and the cash is burning a hole in his wallet.
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
If you want to find a boyfriend, Vegas is not the place for you AT ALL. It's a cool city, but I could never live there permanently. It can really break you down mentally, physically, and emotionally. Of course, I love clubbing and partying, so I can get sucked right into the whirlwind. If clubs aren't your thing outside of work, you won't get burnt out as quick. But if you have any vices at all, Vegas will probably bring them out in full force, whatever they may be.
Honestly? I think it's a depressing place to live once the excitement wears off. I could never stay for more than a month without hating it. Of course, once I leave, I can't wait to go back, so go figure.
All in all, I don't think it's that great of a place to live, especially if you're single and don't want to be.
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
It's like any other city when you take the strip out of the equation.
Pros: Money to be made
24 hour town
Great weather *if you like it warm)
Great food
Slowly finding more cultural elements
Cons: Hard to find someone quality, I was lucky and met my husband here shortly after we both relocated here from other states but from what I hear from my single friends male and female - IT SUCKS
People try to impress you with money, a lot of name dropping, poser types
It does get annoying , all the drunk tourists... anytime you are flying home, tourists on the plane getting drunk yelling VEGAS BABY!!!
Thats the abbreviated list.
Really, I never thought I'd end up starting a family here but thats exactly what I'm doing. Its a great place to live. I don't plan on staying forever but I'm enjoying it. But the vice thing is true, I have never drank or smoked as much as when I moved here. Good thing I don't gamble
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
Definitely sounds like a place I would rather just visit/work frequently and then appreciate going home. :)
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
I've always wanted to live there. Still do even after all the cons. But I'm sure I never will since no one I know wants to live on the west coast.

Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
Hey, Curious J! That's not a bad idea! I love SF! The only thing I don't like about the city is that it gets so damned COLD! AAAHHHHHH! Decisions! Decisions! Decisions! Somebody smack me! Also...were you referring to the OP? :P
/end threadjack
BTW: Is it really even a threadjack if I'm staying on topic? I never got that?
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
I've been living in Vegas since February and am so ready to move back home to NYC, or anywhere else than this place. I'm not hating it, it just isn't for me.
Money in this business ISN'T consistent.
Dating sucks, most guys are outcasts from their original cities or are not real. There were interesting men I met on Match.com but none I would like to be long term with. You will meet magicians, bar owners, bouncers, casino hosts/dealers, hotel developers, real estate guys but not the bankers, lawyers and doctors that I miss so much from NYC.... I couldn't meet anyone with long term potential.
Other than the strip, there's nothing much else to to. You can go to all the clubs and all the nice restaurants( where honestly, I'm not too crazy about the quality of food and prices) but that will get old fast. You can go to lake mead, red rock and mt.charleston for some hiking/skiing/ sunbathing but not much adventure anywhere else.
Everything is far away so you NEED a car. Cabbing it sucks, it's not like NYC you can hail a cab, hop on a bus and/or train every 5 minutes.
I have to disagree with some of you who have posted that there is either culture or some culture in this city. Although this city seems a bit diverse in the people that live here, it is not cultural. I have experienced racism first hand and so has another girlfriend of mine. There are certain cuisines and ingredients I can't find that I was able to in NYC. I have not/seen any museums of various arts/sciences.
There are some things that make living here pleasurable.
It's a very accepting city I think, where I don't feel judged when I tell people what I do for a living.
It's very inexpensive to live here if you're renting. Not sure how it is to own anything.
I love the weather, no rain, not too extremely cold like NYC.
I know this is still a fairly new city, and much smaller to compare to NYC so maybe it has potential but it's definitely not for me right now. I just wanted to point out the comparison it is to NYC because from what I hear SF and NYC are very similiar big cities
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
I'm in Vegas and I hate it. I do love the fact that it never gets really cold, the mountains, hiking and lake mead, the 24hr. stores but Vegas definitely lacks culture, substance, and good people. I miss Chicago. I'm thinking about moving back already after 5 years of being here.
Re: What's it like to live in Vegas?
Kiki- Vegas most definitlely has nothing on NYC , thats agreed, having lived there for a short amount of time, there is no comparison. As far as culture it is not a Manhattan or San Francisco but there is culture here, you just have to work a little harder to find it. I've also experienced racism here, but I've experienced it in every other city I've lived in also. This past year I finally decided to stop complaining about the lack of culture and actively try to find things that I might enjoy.I've been to some really cool performing arts, poetry, asnd live music events that I would never have heard about if I didn't seek them out. Again nothing compares to NYC where all that stuff is open for the taking but there is a lil something here.
