Proper skin care for problem skin?
Anyone have some advice and tips for what face wash products are good for problem skin (pimples, oily skin, etc). My skin produces excess oil and i get pimples from time to time. Damn problem skin....=P but anyone with input on care and maintenance for problem skin please chime in since this type of skin is harder to maintain than normal skin. What are good non poor clogging products, avoid alcohol contained products? What about toners, use em or skip? How about acne creams? Any medications other than Accutane for the treatment of acne? In your opinion/personal experience does diet really affect your skin? Drinking water help? What about avoiding sugary foods? Any input is appreciated.

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
Are you an oily skn that breaks out occasionally, or is your skin acne prone, too?
-
Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
My skin didn't clear up until I eliminated refined sugars and grains.
But without a diet change, benzoyl peroxide as a topical helped. My advice is to stay away from harsh cleansers...the medicine in them doesn't stay on your skin long enough to make a difference; the best they can do is irritate. You want a gentle, non medicated cleanser and a good topical.

What are some examples of food that contain refined sugars/grains?
Thanks in advance guys

I have found this to be true for myself as well. I haven't completely eliminated them but I did drastically reduce them.
BS, what type of products are you looking to try? Drugstore only or are you down for more high end?

Refined sugars: white sugar, brown sugar, honey, corn syrup
Refined grains: white flours, white rice, any "white" grain
I had to eliminate all grains however. This doesn't work for everyone though.

Im open to all suggestions, i remember reading that for facial cleansers you want something thats non pore clogging (theres a term for this...cant remember) and i think avoid oil based? Or is it good? Avoid products containing alcohol? Such as cleansers and toners? Dont toners restore skin's ph balance? Ive tried Obagi, it seems to be a non irritating and not to drying...doesnt seem to work that well though, id say 6 outta 10. What do you suggest LSM?

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
There's probably more that I'm forgetting so if you are going to do this, you'll want to research some more.
Also, if you try this, it takes a full month to work on average.

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
honey is a refined sugar??? wah!
BS, I really liked the Obagi toner! I guess it's very ymmv. You want to use products that are noncomedogenic. I would avoid alcohol based toners. I recently purchased Anthony Logistics for a special guy friend and he loves it. The glycolic cleanser has great reviews on MUA. Specifically I got him the glycolic cleanser, the alcohol free toner, and some sort of Vitamin A night treatment. He doesn't have acne but I think the cleanser would be especially beneficial for you; Glycolics help clear your face.
My own personal routine consists of Pond's cold cream followed by Cetaphil, alcohol free toner (currently I'm using Aveda which is just ok I think obagi is better but I'm trying to use up all the crap in my cabinet before I buy more shit) and Retin-A. Sometimes I use moisterizer I switch back and forth right now between Cerave and the Aveda sensitive skin one. This is working well for me.

how old are you? The reason why I ask is beacause, although everybody is different, I found that my skin has gotten better with age. As a teen I had bad, borderline cystic acne... Up until 25, I had acne... Now I'm just oily with occasional breakouts.
When I was a teen, NOTHING helped. In my early twenties, I used gentle foaming cleansers, alcohol free toners, and I found moisturizing products with retinol, salicylic, and gycolic acid worked best for me. I really liked ReVive- super duper pricey but really effective. Before ReVive, I liked Estee Lauders Diminish as a night time moisturizer. Benzol peroxide was just too drying for my skin so I avoided it. For the most part, I now treat my skin as a normal skin type and I'm more concerned about preventing premature aging than fighting breakouts.
On thing that I do notice (and this is weird) my skin looks better when I'm working out regularly. I live in a dry climate so I notice my skin looks "tired" when I don't drink enough water.

Yeah, but if it doesn't cause problems for you, who cares what it is }:D
I think raw honey may be the exception to this, but I'm not sure. I know the regular pasteurized honey in stores is considered refined.

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
I have the same kind of skin type as you Jeremiah. However I use a lot of chick face wash.... are you up to using that? :P Also it's important to know if you have sensitive skin or not, because that makes a difference. I can get some product suggestions for you if you just figure out whether you're a sensitive skin type or not.

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
My derm gave me a script for Tazorac. It is amazing. It comes in cream and gel form.
I would recommend the cream if your skin is sensative w/acne. The gel is a bit drying , but trust me, it WORKS!!
If you have a blackhead starting to poke out or an under the skin cyst, the gel will knock it out over-night and not leave a scar. However, it is strong and a bit drying. It itches a bit a after you put it on. But when you wake up in the morning, your skin will glow.

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
Eliminate all grains (or at least anything with gluten in it).
Eliminate soy (good chance it doesn't react well w/ your system).
Eliminate dairy ("").
Eat proteins and veggies and a little fruit.
Drink LOTS of water (at LEAST 1/2 your body weight in oz). No alcohol.
Supplements that work very well:
PANTOTHENIC ACID capsules or powder -- take up to 10 g/day (it's a lot but works for acne extremely well)
digestive enzymes
Black Walnut hull capsules (they have an astringent-like effect AND kill parasites as a bonus)
Make sure you get enough fat in your diet too (ghee and coconut oils are my faves -- you can moisturize with foodgrade cocnut oil too!)
Other: Bareminerals (or other mineral-based makeup), Salicylic Acid product (i like Proactive's Night Cream), Dr Bronners soap mixed into a paste with baking soda (as a scrub).

My grandmother swears by drinking water and using Noxema face wash. She's in her 60's and she has perfect skin.

What and where is this chick stuff? lol im open to whatever might help. Also when you say sensitive skin you mean like it gets dry easily from cleansers and toners? I would say my skin isn't "too sensitive" but when i used Accutane my face got real dry but i read/heard that was normal with the use of Accutane. What kind of products are you thinking?
1. dark skin
2. oily skin type (not just "t zone" or combination but "whole face")
3. pimple/blackhead prone
4. Sensitive skin (somewhat)
Also i heard oily skin types age slower and dont wrinkle as fast but the trade off is acne prone skin. Also when i wash should i use hot or lukewarm water? rinse with the same temp or cold water? Does hot water really open the pores and cold closes it? Im hearing mixed answers on that. Thanks again guys. P.S. Heres my face pics so you can see what i mean:

Thanks for your input, im 20. Im assuming after a work out or exercise session its best to shower right away to cleanse the skin? Sweat that dries up on the skin can contribute to break outs? If thats the case when possible i should take advantage, problem is im obviously not always near a shower though.

Well, you're very similar to me.
It's not necessarily true that oily skin ages slower, just like it's not necessarily true that dry skin ages faster. It's a myth. Since we're similar, here's what I do.
Morning:
Splash face with lukewarm water to aid my pores in opening up.
Use Olay's Microdermabrasion Thermal Skin Polisher. It's a daily mask that is self heating and feels great.

Use CVS brand Oil Free Toner for Sensitive skin.

Night:
Aveeno Cleansing and Exfoliating Discs.
http://www.epinions.com/images/opti/...resized200.gif
CVS toner
I don't really know a definite answer to the "does cool water close the pores" and whether it's necessary, but I do it anyways.

Thanks BrunetteGoddess. :)

Re: Proper skin care for problem skin?
Oh, and to save money I cut the Aveeno pads in half, because you only really need half to clean your face.
