This spring I went to the Rennaissance Faire and discovered that I really like mead. Recently, when I was in Montana, I tried a couple of bottles of mead by a local meadery there, and I was amazed at the complexity and diversity in it. They had the standard sweet mead, and mead blended with berry wines, but also a dark dry mead, and a spiced version of the dark. I'm especially in love with the spiced mead. I had no idea you could coax such rich flavors out of honey!
I think I may wind up pursuing mead as a hobby, as I'm on my last glass of it right now and I'm looking around on the internet to see where I can buy more. It's funny because I don't tend to like sweet wines, but there is a richness to good mead that grape wine just can't match. It's almost like whiskey, but smoother.
Any other mead fans here? Got resources - links, meaderies, etc. - to recommend?
And why the hell isn't this stuff more popular? It's amazing.
