I'd like to start doing yoga, but I have no idea where to start.
Does anyone have good webpages to get started?
Any good book recommendations?

I love love love Yoga for Wimps: Poses for the Flexibility Impaired (it's by Miriam Austin). It gives all sorts of advice on how to adjust the poses so they're easier without being wrong or hurtful, and there's several series of routines in the back with names like "Oh My Aching Back" and such for specific problems (like sore feet and calves, yay!). Also, the people modeling the poses are average-looking young-to-middle-aged people, so it never makes me feel inadequate. Once you've mastered the poses in this book, you'll be able to go into most yoga classes and be quite competent (though maybe not the most flexible person in class, yet.)
It's so funny that you posted this because I took my 1st yoga class today!
Honestly, it was amazing. If something was too difficult I would just do it as best as I could. I loved it. The energy of the people and the instructors was so awesome. It was really good for me mentally. I am going to try and take another class tomorrow. I am lucky because I have like 4 different yoga studios that are within walking distance from my house. I really encourage you to try it. I think you'll love it! ;D
Hm. Yoga is really something you should do in person in a class IMO.
Granted, my experience with Yoga has all been via videos. Yet I realise that nothing can replace the experience of someone who can help you learn the moves and thus make sure you won't damage yourself.
Plus which type of Yoga. There are so many these days.
I don't have the opportunity to take a class right now. Wish I could.

do any of the above help you out?
I'll check them out. Thanks GCG.
I Took my first class on friday. I found it to be pretty amazing, I really can't beleive I waited this long. The teacher modified some poses for me since i'm 4 months pregs but it was really centering for me all together.
I've never done a dvd but if you can squeeze a class in I think you would like it better.
i dont think its very easy to learn yoga through a website. videos or a class would be the best way to go. i know you said you cant do that, but that might mean you can't start yoga right now. it would be hard to know if youre doing the moves correctly and everything. plus, unless you memorized the moves or something how would you continue? keep looking back at the computer and doing another move?
I would use the websites as a way to find books and DVDs :) as well as help out with advice, tips, etc. Yet that is just me tho' ;) I wouldn't use the website to show me the moves...
I used sites and DVDs to do Yoga for years, and it helped lots I loved it. But I hired a Yoga Teacher to come to my house for 2 hours once. Im flexable and strong and could do almost everything he could, but my word was a stiff the nexy day!
My core muscles were solid! I coudnt cough or slouch, it was amazing what a proper Teacher did for me. I would hire him every week if I could afford it, I would love to imagine what my body would be like after a couple of months of that!
