Default am I on to something here...or just another half baked scheme?

I have already posted here a few times about my shitsky situation here in Europe (Portugal)! Don't ever come here, btw! But, for me to go back to the States full-time wouldn't be practical because my SO is here and also, I do like the country. It just sucks to work here. So, would it compensate for me to strip in New Jersey (I chose Jersey because there's tons of direct flights from Lisbon to Newark) for like 2-3 months during the year and then come back here for a few weeks and just fly back and forth? The plane ticket alone is $600 dollars and I'd have to find room and board.

My SO thinks I'm nuts but the thing is that I am sick of being poor. I put myself through 5 god damn years of college, I speak 3 languanges, and I am working my ass off to take home less than 800 dollars a month. I have no money for extras like clothes and I haven't been able to visit friends and family back in the States for a long time. He just doesn't understand the level of frustration that I feel at being dirt poor after so much hard work. I like stripping. I have tried it now in front of a few small audiences for practice (no money though!) And if I could do it to save money, go back to school for a more marketable career, then hell yeah, I wanna do it! But, what if I fly to Jersey and they say, "you've got cellulite and you dance like an ostrich!" Then shit! There goes a $600 plane ticket.

If you can afford it, try taking on line dance classes from Alena. That will help with the dance part. As for cellulite...read in the newbie section about "Am I too fat, too skinny, too flat.." That will hopefully give you an idea. A lot of this industry is finding the club that fits you right and going to work with the right attitude and hustle everyday. I would be asking myself more "do i have enough sales experience, drive, and confidence in my appearance to do this?"
Everyone has some cellulite... and the black lights do hide a lot. I danced on the heavier side and had no problem bringing home money (most of the time) because I geniunely liked what I was doing and never let "NO" get me down. I wouldn't leave the country unless I was confident in myself.
It's your call though, and best of luck. I got a lot of confidence from Alena, and from the girls at my first club.

are there clubs that will help you find a place to stay? Does anyone know of any in New Jersey or New York? Or even Boston because there's a lot of direct flights there too.

I'm not sure of any in that area. What about DC? Aren't there a lot of flights to and from Dulles?
It's expensive to live on the East coast, but you can make good money. I don't think clubs will set up a place for you to live. Your best bet might be to find someone on here that would rent a room out to you. I wouldn't know how else to go about it, maybe someone else will have an idea?

Your best bet to live cheaply is to get a weekly room. If you're a size 8 or smaller you can easily get work BUT some NJ clubs book a month in advance. You go to audition and get the job and start the following month! Try to find out which book by the week and which book by the month.

Can you do bookings in London or Paris? Also, there are "champagne and conversation" clubs in Germany and Switerland that can bring in decent cash and they often provide dancer housing.

Also, try Philly and Baltimore for decent east coast money.

Finally, can you do something else in Portugal to supplement your income, or are there Visa problems? Etc...

Can you go to the US Consulate in Lisbon and see if there are any opportunities in your field for expats? Tell them you are engaged to a local and need a job to stay.

no offense to Alena, but I think the lessons are probably a little excessive in this case. Just go to a club where you can buy yourself off stage or one where they don't care how well your dance.

And we almost all have cellulite. You might want to get a tan (regular or self-tan).

I think you're just making excuses and fearing the unknown, which is normal. Just know you're doing it.

Perhaps London wouldn't be a bad idea either. I have a work permit in Portugal, but even with that, I get paid nothing. I am telling you, this is the lowest paying country in the European Union. Minimum wage is less than 3 euros an hour. Perhaps if someone from the UK could chime in, I could get an idea of what it would be like working there. I guess I just say the US because I'm from the States and am comfortable with it. I am very uncomfortable with how business is run here in Portugal. All of the clubs require working 6 damn nights a week, you don't get tips, and you barely make anything unless you have double DD's and long, long blonde hair and are an acrobat on the pole. Anyway, working in France seems like it would be awesome but je ne parle pas le français...maybe I should find an agent?

The best thing that I can say is that when I use to travel I had no problem finding a club to work at. I called a few clubs before I would work with them and send pictures via the internet. I found rooms that O could pay for by the week or even in some cases stayed with girls from the club to save some money.

The clubs that I worked at "dancing" was not a major issue...its about how to hustle to make that money..all girls have a different way to dance and that will come in time. Most of the girls who teach pole dancing now...never had a teacher or class to teach them...it comes in time.

Good luck to you. I am sure that you will find a good solution that will work out for you.

Can you find a normal job and stay in Portugal? Obviously the club situation there is pretty dreadful... why not do something else?

How about bartending in Ibiza or another party town? You can travel there for a few weeks or months. It's not too far but it's good.

The thing is is that I'm practicing my profession as a teacher here and that's why I'm making about $800 a month (before taxes, mind you). It's hard to find any decent paying jobs here because the minimum wage is so low. There's a lot of unemployment. Anyway, I'm going to continue looking in Europe and the States, and if anyone could recommend a good agent in Europe, I'd be happy to know of one.

Optimist is on to something, bartending is probably better than minimum wage.
