    Default Why Goth?

The shooter thread got me thinking about "goth." I've always liked elements of "goth" style but I'm non commital in terms of style/lifestyle choices and don't like being identified with a group.

I'm naive to "goth" style/lifestyle but it's been around for decades so I'm wondering why some people gravitate to it and identify themselves with it.

    EDUCATE ME please!

Yeah, I've never really gotten it either, partially because I don't get why they're called that. Goth to me = the germanic tribe. Well, actually, from an english major perspective now that I think about it, Gothic literature is pretty gloomy.

I need education too pretty please!

    cute long description I found.

I hang out at goth clubs and hang out with some goths myself. Pretty much all of them I've met are not devil worshipers or think Marylin Manson is god and all of the ones I've met are very incredibly open minded. Thats why I hang around them. I like to be accepted and like to accept others for who they are or aren't. Its nice to know that everyone (goth) I would hang out with would be so open.

haha. I think it's the people living under rocks who think they're really devil worshippers and stuff.

Well, aside from Charlotte NC, every city I've lived in had plenty of people who identified "goth." They don't get a second look.

But I guess that I'm "goth" according to the description on the site.

I think the term "goth" has evolved into a term to just describe a style. Just like "preppy", "skater", or "grunge".
I've never really given it much thought, this is just an opinion/ observation.

Well, to me, goth started as a rebellion against the typical ideal, i.e. blond hair, tan, pastels, etc, which is why so many goths wear their hair black and wear white powder, dark jewel tones.

It was a way of going to the other extreme, and still finding it beautiful. It also is a rebellion against "naive" trains of thought, such as the fear of death, darkness, etc. Instead of the mainstream thoughts of death as scary, goths embrace death as a beautiful part in life's journey. Darkness, instead of the typical fear, has its own richness and vitality that can't be found int he bright light of day.

    My take anyway

i went through a goth phase, but i think it was really just my way of acting out and being anti-conformist, because i lived in an outback town that was generally extremely strict catholic. i think i just figured that i was already an outcast, so i might as well just piss them off even more by wearing black lipstick and talking about satan. i guess i was just a poser rebellion goth.

i love the goth look though, i think the people who are 'real' goth can look very beautiful. although i do sometimes wonder how they survive in summer when i see them in the mall in black trenchcoats.

Gothic came out of the UK punk scene. It wasnt called goth for a long time but that scene that became something that wasnt really punk anymore used to be referred to as "post punk". I first recall hearing post punk being referred to as "gothic" in the mid 80s.

    >>THE OFFICIAL SEX GANG CHILDREN MYSPACE PAGE.

"One of the groups coming up at the same time as [Southern Death Cult] was Sex Gang Children, and Andi - he used to dress like a Banshees fan, and I used to call him the Gothic Goblin because he was a little guy, and he's dark. He used to like Edith Piaf and this macabre music, and he lived in a building in Brixton called Visigoth Towers. So he was the little Gothic Goblin and his followers were Goths. That's where goth came from." - Ian Astbury of The Cult (Alternative Press Nov. 1994).
    <<

Gothic in the 80s was quite an interesting scene. Today I sometimes find it hard to believe that 80's gothic and modern day goths are even related and sadly a lot if not almost all of the punk roots are gone.

I love a lot of gothic styles in clothing and music but the scene bores me to pieces these days.

I was Goth for a while a long long time ago when it was first starting after punk.

I liked the clothes and nihilism -- it was a manner of dealing with a shitty child hood.

When I was doing it, it wasn't as sophisticated as it is these days. Some people have taken it to an art form - stuff that could end up on a runway.

I also noticed it has been splitting up a bit into glitter goth - fairies and such - as well the brooding goth.

    Modern goth music sucks though.

When I was about 13, 14 I guess I would have been considered "goth." However, nobody ever used that term back then. We were just weirdos. My guess as to why I gravitated towards being so odd was because I'd gone to a really snooty private school with a bunch of assholes. I basically wanted to be nothing like them so I did whatever I could to be different. I was also pretty depressed too. Then I finally was able to switch schools and meet some other kids who were kinda weird like me and fit right in with that whole scene. I grew out of it but I do have to say that when I lived in Tampa as an adult I'd go to goth clubs sometimes.

I did the goth thing for a couple of years, basically because I like the music, the clubs and the clothes. Black hair also suits me. The reason I stopped being goth was very similar to the reason I started- I decided I liked wearing colours, just as I had decided I liked wearing black and teasing up my hair. I still like the goth look, it's just that I mostly prefer to dress more casually now.

I love this thread because it made me so reminiscent of all the goth guys I hooked up (and/or tried to hook up) with, heh heh. I'm the furthest thing from gothic-looking, ever, but I'll take me a black haired, lipstick-and-mascara wearing dude any day.

I'm 21, and still a goth. I barely bother on days I don't leave the house, but if I go out, I'm decked out in tasteful clothes. Like black a-line skirt, high heels, and a button down top. Or stuff like that. I love the Victorian style, and have incorporated some of it into my personal style. It's so beautiful.

As for the crowd, I can't say I've every hung out with any other goths. I work with one, and she goes to a club that is open to the darker variety, but I'm lazy. lol

I was always too short of money (& lazy) for fancy black clothes to be a full-out goth, but I have a "Goth" mentality.

Goth can overlap with heavy metal, or even R&B (Aaliyah Haughton was called "gothish"...RIP) It's a big world. There are even Goths on sunny Puerto Rico, which surprised the heck out of me (the island is a very party-party place.)

The best functional, low-frills Goth lady around is Angelina Jolie.

Now I'm confused. Aaliyah and Angelina have "style." But i'd never call it "goth." Gosh, I dress kinda like that.

I've always wondered what "emo" meant. How is it different than goth? I've really only heard the term a few times before. Does it stand for something?

Hell no. I went there with a few friends one time and my friends car got broken into and we were only in there for like 30 min. Do not go there unless you have big scary body guards next to your car.

    gotta agree with that!
I dressed goth until I became dancer (it didn't make me any money). Honestly I thought the style was very attractive, I like my black hair and pale skin and enjoyed the terrorI instilled in people when I came near, issues I know.
It just suited me, just like now with the tanned skin, red hair and flawless make up, it's a style I found attractive. Some kids take it a bit farther witht he "worshipping and whatnot, I just like the way I looked.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..
