Default Do you keep a journal?

I find writing (or drawing in a sketch book) to be a good way to keep my mind working since I'm not in school right now, and also a great stress reliever. Sometimes I really want to write but it's like I have some kind of writer's block or something. What are some suggestions for what to do when you want to write, but no ideas come to mind?

Ironically, LC, I consider you a colorful and prolific contributor to the SW forums!

In terms of "private" writing output, I've found that composing open letters to myself/friends/family members/lovers/ex-lovers, etc can shed light into corners of my mind that I've overlooked--or taken for granted...

Most of the time I find my writers block isn't really I block, it's just whatever I feel I'd LIKE to write sounds too contrived or stupid. For me, it's hard to put everything you think and feel clearly on paper.

Music helos alot. It can be ANYTHING whatever fits your mood. I listen to classical and techno because there are no words, nothing to telling you how you should feel. But anything that will inspire you!

Sometimes, just writing down single words DESCRIBING how you feel is good enough. It gets the ball rolling with actually putting things down on paper.

Of course, there's the Irish way... (the way my dad always told me) Sit down with a cup of your favorite liquior, lol

I never keep up with regular written journals though I try. I have my myspace blog for public kind of stuff that I want my friends to know and a livejournal and thread on another forum for more private stuff. I guess I'm an attention whore, I like feedback

Budai- A letter to someone or myself....Some thing I haven't thought of. Thank you for that suggestion!

Tor Dow- I agree that music helps. I play piano, so most of the time when I can't write words, I'll write music. And I also agree with your Irish dad! lol!

I do not and even when I was required to do so for a class, I found it just doesn't work for me. To a great degree it is because I view things in terms of what is (e.g., what I'm feeling, experiencing, etc. and what is in terms of reality) but while I see words and language as a useful tools, I also view them as only a rough and poor reflections of the reality. So I try to sort through what I'm feeling and what I think about things, trying not to confuse the "tool" (the language and words) with what I'm trying to understand. Focusing then too much on trying to find the "right" words I find to be a distraction for me. The words can end becoming more important than thing they are trying to describe (and it's the later which is what I really want to get in touch with, not the words to describe them).

I keep a private livejournal. I love it. I just type away when I'm feeling really frustrated. It also helps me keep track of what happened when, things I need to do, important phone numbers, etc. I read some of my entries from a few years ago, and it's also nice to track my personal changes.

At one point, I was doing some altered books and deco book projects. I can say it was very therapeutic. It made me exert a lot of feelings and emotions onto pages that otherwise would have stayed trapped inside me. (Trapped emotions begin to turn toxic after a while). Also, it was a wonderful creative exercise, to express what I was feeling in an illustrative, abstract sense.

I've kept written journal sporadically since I was a kid. I used to keep a totally wacky uncensored anonymous online journal. Now I keep a slightly more toned down half public, half friend journal online. It does help when I'm really upset. Last weekend I was freaking out about something. I called my best friend who was busy & not paying attention, which didn't help me. So then I wrote in my online journal an instantly felt a smidge better.

I keep a blog. Writing takes so much longer than typing that I never keep up on it. Generally, I tell stories about work... nothing exciting (although I think that it WILL be once I stop stripping, which is why I keep it in the first place). If I ever DO write anything exciting, it usually starts with one thought and goes off in some direction.

Journalling is a huge stress-reliever for me. It's how I get clear.

    Hi Lucki,

I don't really believe in writer's block: I guess it suggests a wall, and I don't think that is what is going on. At those times we can't produce I think we are storing up--our soul is working on something. Usually then I'll let go and see a movie I want to see, or listen to music I love, or go out and do something physical--get away from the brain trying to create and let it receive. That often acts as a trigger, and when I get back to the desk again I'm full of ideas.

I find it helps too to have a schedule for writing--even if it is only three times a week--so that your soul knows it will be engaged at those times, and you won't start to feel frantic--that because of everything else going on in your life you might not get a chance to get to your writing. I stick to the schedule and also write at any random time, but it is a reassurance that you have a solid "tunnel of time" that you can count on.

I like what Joan Didion once said, that "I write entirely to find out what I am thinking."...I think we write to get into the inner river, and to find out what is truly deep in us. Usually, before I go into my scheduled writing, I read a good deal of poetry, which seems to get me into that river and helps me move into the words.

Thank you for the thread--it is interesting to see what you and everyone else have to say about all of this.
