Protein bars can be loaded with fat and refined carbs. They're okay, but not as good as regular food. Just check the ingredients list. Many have HFCS in them.

what is hfcs?
the ones i bought (i got 2 to try) have 6g fat and 17g carbs.
http://www.pureprotein.net/
so.. what's more important? haha, that sounds silly, but you know what i mean. if i can't get enough protein, just oh well?
High fructose corn syrup. It does bad things to your insides. And it's cheaper than sugar, so it's in damn near everything. All fat and all carbs are not created equal, so it's the ingredients list you'd need to check out for info. What's the brand? (eta:duh, asked and answered. sorry.)

it isnt listed in the ingredients, so thats good right?

whoaaaaa.. in the thread i started about high protein foods, i think it was venus goddess who said you should only have around 60 some grams of protein a day? that site has a chart that says for a 120 pound person you should get 96 grams a day! that cant be right...

pure protein is ok....
if you want a GOOD protein bar- the only ones i trust (i.e. not loaded with extra fat & carbs, as well as having a fair amount of fiber, which is rare) is the Met-rx Big 100 bars (NOT the colossal). preferably peanut butter or graham cracker.
p.s. rozz and i are both ex-gnc buds. we have eaten protein bars up the wazoo.![]()
also- walgreens just came out with this "women's active bar?" it's comparatively AWESOME! so... yeah. those are the only two i'll touch. the big 100 has a lot of cals, yes, but eat 1/2 at a time and you're golden. 50 gms of protein, btw... it rocks.
I like Luna Bars. They are the only ones that dont taste like ass IMO!
^ Luna's good! I also like the Clif brand Builder's Bar. I think they're the best in terms of taste PLUS they're sweetened with brown rice syrup & cane juice instead of corn syrup. No trans fats either. 20 grams of protein is very good, I think, considering the quality of the ingredients.![]()

Yea second the Luna and Cliff bars, they are made by the same company I think.

IMO, Luna bars do not have enough protein and are too high in saturated fat for the calories. Builders bars taste great, but they are choc full of fats and carbs. sorry. yes, high in protein, but so are MANY bars. It's finding a balance, and getting your protein worth without sacrificing the rest.
so again, i'd go w/ big 100 or the 'women's protein bar' er whatever it's called/ hehe rozz i second the gnc handshake!! and i believe the protein is a soy protein.

well all i know is tonight before work i ate the protein bar & drank vitamin water and actually had energy to make it through my shift! and i'm not ready to pass out right now. usually i'm ready to go to sleep 2 hours in.
I bought a pack of lunas bars in the lemon & i thought they were gross! I gave them to my friend who loved them. I've tried slimfast ones and some other random brand. Im gonna go buy some you all tried! I hope to find a good brand i can stick with.
hey so while we're all talking about protein bars, is soy or why protein better if you're trying to lose weight/tone up?

^^ I don't think it matters. Except that they say that consuming some soy is good...it has "isoflavones" which I think are anti-cancer things? They say consuming a certain amount of soy products helps reduce breast cancer risks.
There is some benefit to consuming soy as opposed to other forms of protein, according to Barry Sears (creator of The Zone). So if you're interested in the approach of lowering carbs and increasing protein, especially regarding its effect on insulin, it's an interesting tidbit.
Sears wrote he Soy Zone after creating the original Zone. Here he is explaining a little bit behind this theory:
Q: What are the differences between the Zone diet and the Soy Zone, and how are they similar?
A: They're actually identical. The Zone diet is all about balancing carbs and protein at every meal to achieve the correct hormonal response. In The Soy Zone, I explain why choosing soy as your source of protein will yield hormonal responses superior even to those attainable through the Zone. One of the main reasons for adding soy to your diet is the fact that it has a lower impact on insulin. Therefore, the more soy you consume, the easier it is to stay in "the zone" -- that is, the easier is it to keep your insulin at the correct level, neither too high nor too low.
Q: Why does soy make you lose weight?
A: Soy doesn't make you lose weight per se. Its effect on insulin causes you to lose weight at a faster rate. The only way to lose excess body fat is to lower insulin, and soy helps you lower insulin more quickly than animal protein does, assuming you're still balancing protein and carbohydrates at each meal.
Q: Is soy a more easily digestible protein than meat or chicken?
A: Yes, it is.
Rest of the above interview here.

I make my own protein bars...well i consider them protein cookies....
1/2 cup oats
1 heaping scoop banana nut protein powder (bsn lean dessert)
1/4 apple - diced or 1/4 banana diced
3 T or so of splenda
1 t cinnamon (I like to use pumpkin spice mix)
1 T banana cream flavored instant sugar free pudding mix
Mix all together and add water until it is like a thick batter.
Spray some Pam spray on a cookie sheet
spread the batter in a circle or square about 1/4 inch thick
sprinkle a tiny bit of splenda and cinnamon on top
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes.
You can cut it in quarters, or eat it like a big cookie!
This is really good and ties me over for one of my 6 meals of the day!
it ends up being around 300 cals, and 28 g of protein. Yum!!!
Amen, sister...Builder Bars kick ass all over the map. Preach the word!I also like the Clif brand Builder's Bar. I think they're the best in terms of taste PLUS they're sweetened with brown rice syrup & cane juice instead of corn syrup. No trans fats either. 20 grams of protein is very good, I think, considering the quality of the ingredients.
Your body needs carbs to properly and completely metabolize protein. Builder Bars are more of a complete meal replacement, if there is such a thing.Builders bars taste great, but they are choc full of fats and carbs. sorry. yes, high in protein, but so are MANY bars. It's finding a balance, and getting your protein worth without sacrificing the rest.
Luna bars are also very good.

Every morning I have a Southbeach bar (10g) and a skim latte. It's really helped with weightloss. If you are a meateater though, I doubt these would do anything other than add processed carbs to your diet. For veggies and near veggies protein bars can really help balance out your diet IMO.

^^ I liked the taste of those South Beach bars, but due to the sugar alcohols, I always had gas after eating them.Definitely not a way for me to gear up for a shift at the club! I prefer the long-burning brown rice syrup of the Builder Bars, but you do get 100 or so extra calories (I don't mind).
