what's the deal with it? I saw it linked on my gmail. Anybody use it? Is it worth using? Tell me, oh computer gurus.

It's ok, it's a UNIX variation of a lightweight operating system, which is nice since there is a few bsd and linux ones. It's really just great for like, laptops, single service machines, or routers (not really remembering if there is a firewall router in it or not)
Last load I tried was 3.1 when it was in current.
It IS POSIX compliant. But really, it uses the same Xwindows as everything else.
People are not ruled by their memories.

a variant of it turned into linux.
Nowadays, Minix is the focal point for Tanenbaum's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_S._Tanenbaum) research on Microkernels. The idea is that every little bit of software on your computer should not be able to crash the rest if it stuffs up itself. Also, every user should be able to have all their own little bits completely independant of each other... none of this "Administrator of the whole computer" stuff.

well, nothing you guys said really made any sense to meI was just curious if it was something the average schmuck might be interested in using...like Firefox is better than IE type thing.

95 percent of 'average schmucks' use windows xp or vista. if you really don't like windows but want nerds to think you're clever, use a mac with os x on it. problem solved.
minix/bsd/linux are mostly for people whose hobby is arranging the settings on their computer from a command line, not for people who use computers as tools to do jobs.
