Holy fuck! I had no idea they were so expensive! Geez I'm glad I just bought a cheap clip-on for now.
Have no idea what would be appropriate for tipping...sounds like they're making a pretty fucking good living regardless!
I don't know the answer, but I personally did not tip my extension guy anything.
He did my extensions at my home, meaning the profits were all his, no split with the salon. I paid $1600 for my extensions. I thought that because he made $1000 off me, and it was done in my home a tip was not nessessary. I may have been wrong there, but fuck, I thought he made plenty of a profit.
Had it been done in a salon, I probably would have tipped $100.
When he did my maintence, he cut me a break, and only charged me $250, so I tipped him $50 extra.
consider the cost of the hair... then, tip 0-30% of the cost of the service (not including the price of the hair).
but, imo, if you're paying 100$ an hour,or more, you don't need to tip so much, then 10% or nothing is perfectly acceptable.
if the hair cost 800$, and the work was 300$ I'd tip about 100$
if the hair cost 700$, and the work was 400$ I'd tip about 75$
if the hair cost 600$, and the work was 500$ I'd tip about 50$
if the hair cost 500$, and the work was 600$ I'd tip about 25$
if the work was more then 600$, I'd feel they were compinsated more then enough and a gratitutity isn't needed.
^^I don't think the hair will ever cost that much. Extensions are so expensive b/c they are labor intensive, not because of the cost of hair. If he is charging you that much for hair, he's making profit off that too. I'd search around and buy the hair myself and bring it in, so I only have to pay his fee to put them in.

I agree w/ you on buying the hair on your own!
but I know that there are quite a few salons around here that charge that much of a markup for hair. something that should cost 3-400$ can be 6-800$ in salons.
supposing she paid 400$ for the hair, the labor cast 700$. lets say the stylist pays 10-20% to the salon, either through rent fees or a cut on services. he's made, before his 100$ tip, 560-630, depending on the % he pays out.
so at a minimum, he's making 660$ in 5 hours. it's not that damn labor intensive!
oh, and if he's paying any more then 10-20% total earnings, he's crazy! Any good stylist wouldn't pay out more then that. maybe 30 if it's an amazing salon that brings in good clientelle, and advertises for you.

In my case, could not buy the hair seperatly. HairLocs provides their hair, and a certified HairLocs extensionist will not put other hair on. If youget the HairLocs extensions, you have to order the hair thought Hairlocs as well. My hair cost $600, the labor was $1000. It took 7 hours. Like I said, I did not tip.
cutey, what kind of extensions do you have?
I paid my lady $50-$100. It was her own salon she owns so she didn't have to split it with anyone. Its definately hard work to put them in!
