    Default Opening a tanning salon

**Im not sure if this should be here or dollar den... its not so much about money as its questions about others' salong but feel free to move it**

I was talking with my guy last night. Weve been going back and forth on business opportunities. Neither of us wants to work for someone else. We want to own our own business.... and I had been throwing around the idea of opening a tanning salon.

I had a couple questions for the girls:

What are the pros/cons of YOUR tanning salon?
Do they offer anything special that makes you go there?

*I know I loved one of my salons because they had a room behind the counter to hold your lotions/goggles so you didnt leave them in your car and another with a small tv that they would put cartoons on so I could bring my daughter (who was 3 at the time)*

Im debating on starting fresh or opening a franchise. Im leaning towards starting my own salon so I can do things how I waant. My guy told me I need to come up with a business plan... so Im researching EVERYTHING.

    Thanks Ladies

    I'm easy.

I like my tanning salon because it's cheap and they don't constantly bug me to upgrade. I go in, tan and leave.

^^^ another thing I thought about was offering just paying a flat rate to come in and tan thats not outrageous.

Like you can pay $5 and tan in a basic bed. No membership needed. Or $8 in the upper bed, etc.

I remember I went to California Sun Center one time. I wanted to go into the high pressure bed - just once and she toldme it would end up being $75!!! WTF? Because you cant just tan and go - you pretty much HAVE to buy points and crap. I just walked out totally confused.

My parents were going to buy a tanning salon. They decided against it b/c there's not enough profit in it unless you have at least couple of them.

My favorite salon ever had these things that made it the best (IMO):

-a shelf/table to place your keys and shades on
-hooks to hang your clothes on and a chair too
-bottled water already waiting for you
-cd player so you can play your own music (ipod hookups would be great!)
-spray deodorant AND a body spray for you to use
-air-conditioning in the really hot beds (some little vents at the foot of the bed or from the top of the standup, those were the best)
-a Jolly Rancher or some other candy to suck on while in the bed

Good luck, let us know what you decide to do!!!

One other thing to look into is the spray tanning. There is a growing segment of the population that is afraid of UV rays, but still want the tanned look. I know someone who has a spray tan set-up at his gym, and it is making him consistant $$

Everything LatinaRose mentioned, of course! (Woman, you are like the beauty/style GURU.)

Things that would make me switch from Hollywood Tans (which I am very happy with):
Possibility for personal airbrush appoitments (doesn't need to be available for walk-ins but I'd like that to be an option)
(Repeat) iPod hook-ups would be awesome, but xm radio is cool too
No bitchy/pushy staff that makes me buy $60 tanning lotions
Baby wipes in room (my salon has them in the area in back with hair sprays/body sprays and all that - but I hate having to tan with lotions on my hands

Hmmm... I think that's it. I've always wanted to open a tanning salon, good luck!

I do think the room for children might be some trouble though. I think you'll run into big liability issues.

Because there ain't no tits on the radio

^^^ Hollywood Tans is the franchise I was looking at because theres NONE in a 3 hr radius here...

Reasons Im thinking of doing my own is you cant sway from their business plan BUT with them they HAVE a plan that works. Not to mention advertising and such, and a known name.

Babywipes - I keep them in my tanning bag! But having those little ones that you get when you buy ribs would be great.

Candy/Mint - some places do that - one thing I like but forgot about. Great ideas

XM radio is great - I hate when the stations dont come in great in the beds.

With children - it wasnt a room - it was just a tv in the waiting area but yea - i mentioned liability with that last night to my guy... i wouldnt have a childrens area but i was deterred from tanning for a LONG time because its a pain in the but to get a babysitter for 30 minutes :/

Spray tan is a great idea... I personally hate Mystic (some people love it) Theres nowhere to get the spray tan done (the personal one, like Sunset Tan has) I would LOVE to have 'abs' sprayed on!

As per no money unless more than one - I would 'hope' to eventually turn the salon into a chain - but would need a great business plan and a lot of luck but as per one salon - yea just lease and electricity is EXPENSIVE!

Oh - keep the ideas comming!

i don't mean to thread jack, but i have been burning with this question for a long time.

I have never been to a tanning salon, so bare with me...

Can a person wear sunblock to for protection against UV rays(to prevent cancer) and get a great tan? Would sunblock do anything at all anyway?

I feel like a 'tard asking this question, but i really wanna know!

Well, since sunblock blocks the UVA and UVB rays from the sun and tanning beds are UVA and UVB rays (tho mostly UVA) point would be mute. Waste of money IMO. Theyre pretty much the same rays.

    - no high pressure sales
    - cheap prices
    - CLEANLINESS! is a must.
    - a fresh'n up table with body spray, hair spray, qtips, cream ect...
    - towel (thats soft and not all stained)
    - candy to enjoy while tanning is always nice
    - fan or AC in the room.

    oops

Well, at least the point of sunblock+tanning beds=MOOT was right

And I KNEW something was wrong with that phrase - was just too lazy to look it up like I usually do when Im unsure of something. Ill never type again without wikipedia.com and dictionary.com
