Default My New Meds Are Weird...

I'm now on 100mg of Clomipramine for my sleep paralysis and OCD. It's... interesting.

I'm constantly tired, in a drugged sorta way, but not as badly as when I first started. I can manage to get through my paycheck jobs without issue, but I try to take it after dancing. Plus? Sorta. It's helping to curb my insomnia as well as the OCD and paralysis.

It curbs my overactive appetite... and that is a major plus. The only downside is that if I don't keep an eye on myself, I only take in 500 - 800 calories a day. Not good. I have to make myself eat more (I'm finally falling into the 1200 - 1500 calories per day that SparkPeople has me on).

It also gives me horrid dehydration and cottonmouth. Pleck! Lots more water for me. I usually hate water but the fact that I'm going through so much of it? Thats a plus.

I usually either love or hate the meds I'm on... this is a first time love/hate thing. Well, ok not HATE but... yanno.

    Hi Paige.

Dry mouth- Sorry girl, the Clomipramine will inhibit salivary flow. The best you can do other than taking in more water is try to limit your caffeine/diuretic intake + chewing gum.

You can also try drinking a teaspoon of honey, which will coat your throat. The sweetness will aid in salivary production as well as give you a natural energy boost.

Are you taking the pills with food? Doing so will alleviate gastrointestinal irritation which might be causing a decrease in appetite.

Just to let you know, Clomipramine causes an increased incidence of microbial infection, delayed healing and gigival bleeding, so brush/floss with care.

There is also an increased incidence of skin photosensitivity with this drug, so go out with UVA/UVB blockers. I don't know if you tan, but this includes sunlamps/tanning beds/tanning booths.

    Gracias for all the info!

What's buggging me is that my appetite went from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other. I used to gripe about how I hate being hungry 24/7 but now I'm never hungry at all. I have to force down food, and I often don't take in more than 500 calories a day if I don't eat until I feel sick to my stomach

Most sites list Anorexia as a side effect, and now I'm worried.

Do you get hungry at all? If you do maybe just make sure you eat a good amount of calories when you eat. Probably not the healthiest way to eat but it'll keep you from starving yourself.

How long have you been taking it? Some meds take a while for you to get used to.

I don't get hungry at all. Eating makes me physically and emotionally ill at this point. I've been taking the pills since the 8th of this month... so almost 3 weeks now. The extreme tiredness is a bit less now, but everything else is the same.

Unfortunately, it IS helping what it's meant to help. And it's my last resort besides surgery.

Paige that's ALOT of side effects. I would hope you find a more friendly drug closely related that does not have all those effects on you.

Never hungry? Not good. And the heart rate....whew that is enough for many doctors to pull you off the drug alone. That is one side effect that will not go away with time, as dry mouth, constipation will in a month or sooner.

    Good luck!

Paige, I know how it feels to be taking something that helps what it's meant to help, but all the side effects from that drug make me beyond miserable in day to day life. I'm having some of the same side effects that you are on a totally different drug, but Pamela's right, if your heart is going too fast too long it's a *really* bad thing. My heart rate and my uncontrolled shakes are the only things my doctor even asks me about, and he knows other stuff is going on. My tardive dyskinesia will never go away, so I'm stuck shaking and twitching the rest of my life. It is something I would never wish on anybody, and I love my Paige, so be *very* careful.

You know what they say, 'We're giving you this because the benefits outweigh the risks'. It's a cop out IMO, but you really need to go to the doctor about the heart stuff.

Have you talked to your doctor? That is a lot of side effects, are the pro's out weighing the cons?

I second what Ginger said....it sucks to take meds for one thing, just to have them cause something else. A cpl of the meds I am on are simply to counteract the side effects from other meds...grrrr.....

Those are some serious side effects though..I'd call you Dr and see if theres either something differant you can try or maybe something that you can take to counteract them.

Hugs to you honey. Meds suck. Wouldnt it be nice if we could wave a magic wand and fix all our problems and never have to take meds again??? Sigh....

It really scares me that if I eat more than 300 calories a day, I freak the fuck out.

300 calories is a meal. This is a recipe for body function failure. I don't want you to go down that path because of these awful side effects you're having. Please talk to the doctor who Rx these meds to you soon.
