Default Why does South Beach seem so grimy?

I'm in SoBe right now on the beach, which is nice, but why does everything (i.e., hotels and a lot of restaurants) feel so fucking dirty?!! We are paying a nice amount of money for one of these Art Deco style hotels, which is better than the one that I stayed when I was here for Spring break in college, but somehow still feels a bit, I don't know, skeevy. The "marble" floor looks dusty, the walls look old, the bathroom looks suspect, and the bed has something sticky on it when my leg presses against it. :gag:

Also, everyone here is high on something. Not weed high, but high on some special shit.

Maybe I've turned into a diva. Maybe I have OCD. Or maybe I've just been here too many damn times. Or maybe after you go somewhere like London or Stockholme you're just not impressed by the same things. Whatever it is, I'm annoyed, I feel sticky, and I would like a bath in disinfectant. (I already went to the drugstore and bought Lysol and DOUSED the room in it.) My arms are dry because I keep washing my hands all the way up to the elbows.

I'm going to the Ritz tonight. From now on, I will only stay at 4 and 5 star CHAIN hotels.

Does anyone know a NICE place on South Beach that is immaculately clean to stay in? I'll be here for a few days. Also, what are some nice restaurants to go to?

Definately go the the Ritz!!! I agree that South Beach can seem dirty. Hmm, I don't really go to south beach for the food but I have been to Emrils (Adjacent to the Loews hotel) and to Nobu at the Shore Club and they were both very nice with great food.

South Beach is a hole. Everything is WAY overpriced and not worth it. I worked in south beach twice a week when I was shooting the gay series I did for awhile....I HATED having to go there. Once traffic was stalled forEVER...because there was a shooting in the middle of the street. Lovely.

The one hotel I've heard is gorgeous is the Mandarin Oriental. Pricey though:

Yeah. Thank goodness the guy paid for it, or I'd be super-pissed.

    Yup.

The only things I like there are Casa Tua (beautiful, quiet restaurant with mind-blowing Italian food) and The Setai hotel, which is gorgeous. I've never stayed there, but it's a great place for drinks.

There are much better places with good beaches and nightlife that people can go to that aren't as grody and overpriced.

I have to admit though, that most of the times I've been there, it's been with a group and I've had fun. But those are people I'd have fun with just about anywhere outside of a forced labor camp.

South Beach is a nice place to visit....sort of. I agree that the hotels seem seedy and I couldn't see what there was to get excited about. Even the beach itself isn't the best beach, although it's a decent enough beach with good people-watching and nice water.

My personal favorite is Delray Beach (just north of Boca Raton, 60 miles north of Miami). Gorgeous beach, great hotels in all price ranges, fun boutiques and cafes but not too touristy, and well within driving range of Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach if you want some nightlife.

South Beach is a place for hard core party goers. A drug hole. Hence the hard core druggies.

I've always preferred Key West over South Beach. Key West seems more just about drinking where as South Beach always seemed to me to be all about the drugs.

I agree with Aviendha, Delray Beach is very quaint.

Ah, I wish the old days were back with Bar None.....and some of the other great places on Washington before it became a total fake scene.

Boy, the stories I can tell.

i usually stay at the winterhaven it's always been clean there. the acting rich part isnt just in south beach it's all of south florida. it's all about what you wear, what you drive ect. hate that.

Man, I thought this was about the diet. I was about to say, "Wash and eat the vegetable when they're still fresh, don't overdo the olive oil, and it won't seem so bad."

I wouldn't know South Beach from Omaha Beach or the South Pole, but it also sounds a lot like the Quarter in New Orleans, at least before Katrina. Fun but kinda skanky. You end up taking an extra shower or two.

I feel the same way. I LOVE south bch! Love it. The problem is too many people now days.

There are nice hotels and places to eat, hang. It's a different feeling for people who have never been i think. It's a "i hate it or love it" kinda thing.

I always had fun! I don't drink, people are friendly to me, and you want anything, it's there!

True, dress expensive, drive expensive...Nice place imo.

I stay away from SoBe, the traffic/parking, overpriced everything, and everybody's always high on something. As for hotels, yours may be that way since many of them were built earlier in the century when the place was developing. Go to the newer ones suggested, a little more pricier though. What I hate about SoBe restaurants is that many times the service sucks because the people don't work for tips, it's already included in the bill..no matter how many people are there with you. There's fun things to do in attitude-filled South Beach if you try though.

for some real grime, check out club deuce, the grossest dive bar, on 14th between washington and collins. Good times indeed. For some general fun diveyness, Purdy Lounge, yay! I love purdy.

Besides previously mentioned restaurants. For some lovely sushi, Toni's Sushi across from Mansion has the best tuna tartare and damn good fish. Yum. World Resource on Lincoln has a good tuna tartare but crappy rolls. I like the food at Prime 112, a steakhouse on Ocean near Nikki Beach. Early evening drinks: Delano and Shoreclub are my favs in the classy category. In semi-dive category, The Room on first between collins and washington. It is super small little wine bar, dark and great atmosphere. Did I mention it was small? It gets packed on the weekend, mostly locals.

Oh, it's stone crab season, isn't it? Go to Joe's Stone Crabs! YUM! And get the key lime pie too, OMG I love, love, love it. Even better when it is frozen. Yummmmmmy!

Oh, Pacific Time has great seafood, it is one of the oldest restaurants in SoBE, right up there with Joe's (which is the oldest, I think). And get some 5 am pizza at Pizza Rustica. LOL
