All the time, an interesting book by Robert Massi, & highly recommended. Not talking about the fun stuff, either.
Bascially this is about how the 'system' & other circumstances can ruin or severely challenge a person's life.
It briefly covers true stories of people messed by such things as identity theft, homeowner's headaches, car financial messes, debt, etc.
One of the stories that really hit me concerned an older couple with a paid for home in a homeownders' assoc. In a nutshell: the man got very ill, was fined for putting up a wheelchair ramp, his wife forgot to pay a couple of asessments, they ended up losing their home.

"People get screwed" is the name of the book?

I have heard so many stories of HOA's - they no longer strike me as a means of protecting one's home value anymore. It is all about telling you want you can and cannot do as well as fees and they even foreclose on people's homes to put up for auction!

Sounds like a good book of warnings.

^^^ Homeowners Associations, along with Emanent Domain for economic development reasons, along with zoning laws / environmental laws etc. have all eroded the 'property ownership rights' that Americans formerly enjoyed. You are absolutely correct in your implication that property ownership is now little more than an illusion.

Yes, indeed that is the title. I first heard of it by flipping tv channels, the author, along w/some of the people from the book's stories, were on the Montel Show. I was at my library the other day, & there it was. &, yes, this poor unfortunate couple (in their 70's) lost a 300k home just because of some fines & a couple late assesments that escalated. They found out after it was sold at an auction. It started out, the man got Hep.B on a trip. The son came in from out of state & built a wheelchair ramp the man needed. (He later took it down). The man's wife accidently forgot a couple assesments, due to the fact they were going to his doctor, & to therapy a lot.
Anyway, in my mobile home park, some guys were thrown out, very similar circumstances. They wanted to sell their home, but were not 'allowed to'. I also found out that there will be fines levied here, as well for not cutting lawn enough, etc.

Wat I'm talking about of course is the ability of Homeowner's Associations / gov't agencies to dictate which uses for your property are 'acceptable' versus which uses for your property are 'unacceptable', and more importantly their ability to end your property ownership if you don't agree with their dictates ! This now runs the gamut from smoking inside your own condo, to building a large garage on your own property, to building a dock on your own waterfront. In some cases this also includes wanting to cut down trees on your own property, or simply owning a property which is 'desirable' to commercial developers for building apartments / a shopping mall / an industrial park etc.

Yes. I would NEVER live in a HOA. The teeth of the gov't. are sharp enough, let alone inviting another monster along.
The book has other stuff in it, in which you can get, well, screwed. Car ownership, insurance, small business, identity theft, etc.

We lived in a HOA (condo) for a few years. When we moved, I was MORE than relieved. This association was SO bad that they didn't keep up with the tuckpointing on the building for 10-15 years...so there were cracks/holes in the mortar and people started having problems with wet walls and mold...there was a wave of lawsuits coming through...glad we got out when we did. The other thing that sucks about HOA is that if there is a special assessment...you gotta pay it...usually in one lump sum, but sometimes in no more than 3 payments.

HOA's suck...and a lot of new subdivisions are built with HOA's. We refused to ever deal with a HOA again. Ever.
