    Special FX Makeup

Anyone have any good tips for Halloween? I need to make myself look like I've been beaten up and maybe cut. What products can I use and how can I go about this without spending a fortune?

I was inspired by a hilarious costume I saw on a cocktail waitress at the Hustler Club in San Diego a couple nights ago. She was a battered housewife - bathrobe, slippers, hair in curlers, black eye and bruises all over her face and throat. Not politically correct, I know, but funny. I think I'm gonna break out the boots and torn fishnets and go as a beaten-up streetwalker.

A swipe of rigid collodion will tighten and pucker the skin as it dries, making it look like a scar. Add a few drops of blood and voila! A bloody slash mark! Just peel it off when you're done!

You always have to be careful with costume themes like that , remember the whole Tyra ANTM scandel ??

either way , if you want good bruises and this really looks great try using Matte eye shadows in plums and reds with some dark bluish black ( depending on what color bruises you want) Really though just some cheap ass eye shadow in the right colors and make sure you use a few different shades on each bruise just like a real one would have many shades . I don't think I have to explain the technique I am sure you can figure it out as you go .....use a q-tip or something and blend ..have fun

Thanks, guys. What kind of wax, Jade? Should I just drip a candle and pick appropriately? I was trying to get out of this with the least amount of expense!

I agree completely! One thing to remember if you are using this tho is you have to get an oil based remover for it otherwise you are picking it off all night lol

Really cheap effect i like to use is tissue and latex just make a cut shape with the tissue and latex it on your skin, makesure the tissue is very thin at the edges so they dissapear and then colour the wound

The Tyra ANTM scandal- the images where she had th models pose "dead" after another model had "hurt" them.

I agree, it was not cool. There is really nothing funny or entertaining about women who are abused by their significant others and ESPECIALLY men. In the shows defense, I understand it was violence committed by one female model to the next, however, the images only displayed the corpse and in this increasingly male-dominant world those images easily give dudes the "thumbs up" to beat up on girls.

When they did the episode were the models were made to look like they have been beaten to death , everyone got pissy with her because violence against is so serious and that she was mocking it by making art ....or something like that . I was just saying walking around like a battered house wife might not be funny to everyone

That photo shoot didn't offend me in the slightest, although I'm kind of morbid. I thought yall were somehow talking about the fat suit incident, that was kind of offensive I thought.

OP: I think a beat up streetwalker would be hilarious. I highly doubt anyone would be too sympathetic to a hooker...so i doubt you'll have too many problems with offending people. I've I did Halloween I'd be very tempted on stealing your idea, its great!

When I was in film school I learned a few pretty ghetto and some not so ghetto techniques for cheap horror makeup. I had a habit of making quite a few bloody films hehe

Bruises can be done with a decent set of watercolors. I'm not talking like the cheap Crayola ones. The decent pigment rich ones work well. If you don't mind something more permentant I have in desperate times dyed my skin with purple and yellow food coloring. It took some intense scrubbing action later that night but it stayed on damn well. If you want to splurge go to any Halloween store and grab a Cinema Secrets creme stack for bruise FX. It should have purple, black, yellow, and red. I actually like the crap formulation of it and think it stays on well. Should be like 6-7 bucks. I don't care for the more creamy Ben Nye ones when staying power counts. I freaking hated trying to reapply melting makeup while trying to shoot an action scene with any degree of continuity.

To make a good looking cut its a little more costly. I always used Ben Nye spirit gum, scar wax and a coating of flesh colored liquid latex. You might be able to get spirit gum and scar wax this time of year at like Big Lots though. I'd just apply a dab of spirit gum to the area, tap it a few times, and wait for it to get slightly tack. Warm some wax in your hand and adhere it. Let it dry a second and then use a pencil or pen to draw a crease through it for the cut. I'd use some liquid latex over the top to seal it and then blend it in to your skin better. Paint some blood in the bottom of the crease and drip some blood on.

Blood I just made from boiling cornstarch in water and adding food dye. Theres several formulas posted online for different viscosities.

Just for fun here is my first at home makeup experiement. I think I was around 15. Its water colors, quaker oats, and corn syrup. The flies love that shit! I've since learned some more grown up ways to do makeup when my stupid PA jobs require me to be an entire crew. I have a picture of a beat up housewife I did somewhere that I can't find I did a black eye with a cut from presumably her husbands ring gashing her, a huge hand print on her arm where he grabbed her and a few other bruises from being tossed around. It was a dream sequence so it was overly dramatic.

    Wow, Gretchen! That's amazing!

I'm gonna pop by the magic shop on Hollywood Blvd. later today or tomorrow. They have a ton of Halloween stuff and I know they'll have some makeup kits. I'll work on it! I'm going to be a battered housewife for a couple of parties this weekend and a battered hooker for work on Halloween. So I should get pretty good at this makeup by the time this next week is out.

    Thanks!

I actually don't get it. Like not in an offended way - I just don't see what's funny about it.

I have a weird sense of humor. And I want an excuse to finally get to do some FX makeup for Halloween; I've always dressed up but never got to do anything gross or funny, or anything involving bruises and cuts and stuff. It'll be fun, I'm looking forward to it!
