Default oh, so this is why americans are so fat.

i brought my boyfriend to jack in the box just now for his midnight bribery snack (i woke him up bc i was lonely, so i promised some snacks) and i ordered a medium dr pepper. i'm expecting a little bit bigger than a kid's sized pop. um... you'd think i ordered a fucking liter of pop.

    ? so i'm guessing a small isn't much smaller.

Am oh so jealous. The range of drive fast food in here pales in comparison to what's available in the States. We've only got a handful of Taco Bells and they don't even have drive thrus.
Can't wait til I get to go to the States to sample the cuisine!

Everything is supersized now. What's considered diet/small portions were actually the standard norm back in the day.

LOL. JITB AND Carl's Jr. have enormous sizing. It blows me away. I wanted a medium shake, and I got a bucket!

^Makes me think of this party at the local bar here a few years ago (well, the only one I go to anyway, we have about 5 compared to the 3500 people in town). I saw a sign at the bar that said "Long Island Iced Tea Bucket: $7.00" I asked the bartender: "What's a Long Island Iced Tea Bucket?" Her response? Long Island Iced Tea, in a bucket. It was a lot of booze for $7, anyway. I got loaded for about $40. That was a good night.

This is why I cook for myself now. Portion sizings are ridiculous everywhere. I took my parents out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory (good food btw) and one meal lasted me for 4 meals!

Seriously. I used to go to Wendy's and get a baked potato, a salad, and a medium drink. The medium drink was about 20-24 ounces. I went and did the same thing the other day, and I got like a 32 oz drink!!! Um...smalls for me from now on...

On another note, it's really irritating when they have huge differences in sizes, like a small is 8oz and a medium is 32 oz.

I too noticed the difference in the Wendy's sizing. I worked at a wendy's in high school and there soda sizes were pretty normal. I went there recently and was blown away by how much larger a biggie drink was compared to 5-6 years ago. It's ridiculous but so obvious that it's increased in size and I feel like these companies are secretly trying to make us fatter - which angers me! There's no need for the soda's to be so huge!

Since coming back to Ameriaca, I almost always order small. Caught myself out a few times with too large of a meal.

I think the drinks being so large is a response to Super Size Me. You know Maccers pulled, their super sized menu right? Well guess what, redefine, small as what medium was, medium as large... and well you get the pictures.

-They just defined darkness as an industry standard.

-Wow a bucket of my recipe would probably put most people in the hospital. I don't think any has ever stayed cohearant after 2 of my long island ice teas! Even the strongest drinkers tend to get knocked out.

Ever since i moved out of America the portions of food that i eat have become smaller. Also now that i don't live there its also easier to eat healthy. There are many bakeries and little shops with food thats healthier, cheaper and tastes much better. I also eat at home most of the time now, which is also better.
There are Burger Kings and McDonalds of course. I rarely eat Burger King, and i have McDonalds.

The 24 hour drive thrus don't help either. In my early 20s (man, I'm sounding old!) my roomie and I would go to Jack In The Box after work and pick up bacon and cheddar potato wedges (extra bacon, extra cheddar, extra sour cream!!), jalapeno poppers, capucchino milk shakes and whatever else looked good. Yeah, maybe it was also a self control issue on our part, but we wouldn't have had a problem if they had not been open!!

And I feel you on the huge drinks!! When I do get soda, I ask for a kids size, which is the same size as the small a decade or more ago. Most of the time, I stick to water.

I got the worst food shocker of my life sitting in a restaurant in North Dakota a few weeks ago. My man orders a baked sweet potato with his steak and the waitress asks if he wanted it smothered in toasted marshmallows and caramel sauce. WTF! No, of COURSE NOT! Gross! Who the hell ruins an already sweet potato with all that crap?

On Turkey Day, a lot of the Germans in my family put marshmallows on top of a casserole dish full of sweet potatoes. It's better than sex. Dunno about the caramel...

As a special holiday dish, yeah I can see eating something like that (you know, the whole candied yam thing)......but as a regular side dish in a restaurant with a steak?

The scary part was that they thought we were strange for turning it down in favor of regular butter. My teeth are still itchy just thinking about it.

The absolute worst part was that it was listed separately as a snack on the kid's menu too. This is exactly why there are an overabundance of fat children.

That's weird. I've worked there and

    Small- 16 oz
    Medium-20 oz
    Large-32 oz.

Well, at Arby's (I love their ham and cheese...nummy!) they have the small, medium, and large. Then there is a 48 oz (I believe) that's like $0.89. So, MOST people just buy the super duper fat producer.

Portion sizes are out of control...however, when you have super fat people ordering and you give them portion controlled sizes, they bitch and complain at how "for all the money, they're still starving".

This is also why my kids won't eat out...I refuse to take them to places that encourages overeating. Every once in a great while, if we're doing a long drive (road trip) and we need to stop somewhere, we'll get the "healthy" options...salad for us, a small sandwich for Makayla and we always get the fruit cup and water for sides. Of course, I've learned to pack a cooler in the back and just save the money ordering out...but every once in a great while it's a treat. Every day/several times a week, it's a guarantee to get fat and really unhealthy.

i try to stay away from fast food, but sometimes i really crave it... so i go for a kids meal. especially chicken mcnugget... but only the 4pc, and no ranch. no ranch makes it pointless, i know...

and mcdonalds fries are horrible for you. i'm convinced that's how i gained 30 pounds that i had to kill myself in order to lose. on supersize me, the bonus features on the dvd, he shows how fast it takes for the food to decompose, and while all the sandwiches were all gone, the fries, which were 2 months old, looked like they were only an hour old. yikes.

LOL..I do this too. About once or twice a year I get COMPLETLEY fed up with my restricted diet and go to McDonalds for a Happy Meal.

I go every now and then to some fast food place and have a burger with no sauce of any kind and a side salad. Or sometimes I'll have about half the fries that come with a combo. That way it's not quite so bad and I get my junkfood fix. I just don't do it more than once a week or every 2 weeks.

Just noticed my fav, swear, HFCS. I can't believe some of the stuff that has it.

I have to be so picky with lunches it is horrible. Try finding a kids drink they can take to lunch without that in there... I think that even a few places try to hide it. HFCS is more or less a sugar substitue, but it is more like sugar and crack.
