^^Yep Ketchup chips here would not go well in the USat least its not chicken flavor
You know it is weird I once thought a mustard and pickles sandwich would be weird, but then I realised, add a hot dog and I eat that anyway.

One more cup of coffee for the road,
One more cup of coffee 'fore I go
To the valley below....

^That may be so, CRB, but if you're missing the meat-style substance in the middle it just seems weird. The hot dog (even though I don't like mustard) would be a sort of moderating influence between the taste of mustard and pickle, making them kinda blend better on the palate. Or something like that.

Ketchup?! Never heard of eating it with grilled cheese sandwiches. The best is a good whole grain bread, butter, a few slices of american cheese (I like it cheesy!), and TOMATO SOUP!!! mmm, that sounds so good. I can't imagine ketchup instead of tomato soup, the soup is so hot and delicious and now I want some freaking grilled cheese!!
^To each their own, I s'pose. I don't particularly like relish or mustard, so such a sandwich as CRB mentioned would definitely be outta the question. Why'd you stop with those sandwiches, if you loved them? You get tired of them?
But, on another note, getting back to the whole grilled sandwich portion of the thread, grilled peanut butter sandwiches are awesomely fantastic. I think I'm gonna have one tomorrow.

noooo one likes chicken noodle soup with grilled cheese? i dont like tomato soup! but grilled cheese & chicken noodle is like my favorite meal!

I find that tomato soup works so well because of the texture, and that it's mainly just liquid, no solids involved. Chicken noodle soup has things you need to chew, which means more time is spent on the soup part. But, again, to each his, or her, own.
*wanders off to make a sammich*

Must be Canadian, or something, because I've never in my life heard of a grilled cheese with ketchup. Sounds.....YUCK.
I mostly eat mine plain - just the butter used to brown the bread and melted cheese. That's the standard American version. Sometimes I'll add a slice of tomato in there.

Ketchup chips???
I eat grilled cheese the regular american way with extra butter...every now and then some tomato soup. My ex is from PR and he used to dip it in ketchup.

Mine HAS to have mayo on it when I grill it. Oh boy yumm my grandma used to always make it that way while me and my cousins danced our hearts out to Love Shack around the pool, LOL!
i sometimes spread the bread with ketchup and then put cheese over the top of it.
I like mine with tomato soup as well, but if I'm eating it plain, it gets dipped in ranch.
French fries need FRY SAUCE! <mayo + ketchup, or mayo + bbq sauce for zip> mmmmmm.....
And French Toast...powdered sugar and maple syrup please.
I believe you Dottie and you have my support
I think the ketchup is a mid-west thing which could include canada. I can't eat grilled cheese without ketchup. With ketchup its delish.
Neither ketchup nor tomato soup nor any other tomato product here.
I heat up the griddle to medium high, then lightly butter the outside of the bread and sprinkle the butter with garlic. Slap the first side down, butter first, and put on cheese of choice for the mood, whether it's jack, pepper jack, cheddar, swiss, muenster, mozarella, whatEVER. Then put down the other slice, butter side out.
When the first side's done, of course, flip it over to the other garlic&butter side, and then cover up the sandwich, and reduce the heat. If you time it right, the second side will brown up about even with the cheese melting.
Because you've lightly buttered it, it won't be too greasy. Because you've sprinkled the garlic, you now have a cheese sandwich with garlic bread. Yum, I tell you.
If you want to use ketchup or tomato soup or salsa or pico de gallo, that's up to you. I like it as is.

YYYEEESS! I mix the ketchup and mayo too. Or just dip the fries right into the mayo. Or really anything I can find-dressing, honey, milkshake.
I generally eat grilled cheese plain, but I'm going to have to try it with ketchup (or jam!). I eat plain cheese sammiches with raspberry jam (or apple chutney, when I can find it), so why not?

I've mentioned that my mom is from Utah. The little hometown burger joint has fry sauce, and it always makes me think of Utah. My mom makes it with mayo/ketchup and I think a little onion salt or something? Fry sauce is ridiculously amazing on tater tots.
Oh, and we have ketchup chips here. I think Herr's makes them, which is a regional brand.
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.
I don't understand why ketchup chips haven't really caught on in the US. I mean, you do have ketchup with fries right?
And I also mix ketchup with mayo when eating fries. That or honey mustard sauce. Or sweet thai chilli sauce. Now I think I'm having fries at lunch today
I hate ketchup. I LOVE grilled cheese though. It's my speciality!
I make a lot of different kinds, but my typical grilled-cheese involves asiago or very sharp cheddar with minced fresh garlic inside, grilled in a blend of real butter and a little olive oil. If I have herb butter on hand, I use that instead. If I have fresh basil handy, I'll put that in the sandwich too. This one goes BEAUTIFULLY with a bowl of lentil soup.

I am not Canadian but I LOVES me some ketchup on my grilled cheese. I have also been known from time to time to dip my grilled cheese in Pure maple syrup. Its Yummy too!![]()

Haven't you & the others who were grossed out at that ever heard of a Monte Cristo? That's a classic sandwich! Battered ham and cheese and usually some kind of jam, often either strawberry or raspberry. She just made a vegetarian version.
Cally, on the Random Thread a ways back, you were bemoaning your lack of a stove to make grilled cheese. Do you have an iron? You can totally make grilled cheese with nothing more than an iron and aluminum foil.

Enjoy!
