I'm considering taking up golf and I need help with the ends and outs. I know nothing about the sport amd I appreciate our tips/advice.
Also, what are the best clubs for women and beginners ?
Thanks in advance,
FH

Take lessons from a pro. And get fitted for clubs that match your height and swing.

Once again I have embraced my addiction and have put off the moral dilemma to another day.
My hubby does, I try but it's very hard, seriously it's hard. I'll tell him to log on later and give you some good books and places on the web you can go to. It's a pricey sport but it's relaxing, although at time it's a bitch but well you will see.

I used to bartend at a country club. I knew nothing about golf, but after listening to the players go on about their games, I decided to play. And I was terrible at it. I found that the most fun for me was getting plastered and laughing about hitting trees instead of getting on the green. But it was fun to play with friends. I really have no pointers as I completely suck at the game, but I think the majority of golf courses have someone on staff to give lessons.
First things first, go get a lesson from a pro at a driving range near you. You'll enjoy the game a great deal if you can actually make the ball go where you want it to(most of the time), and a lesson is often cheaper than a round of golf. They usually also have clubs for you to try during the lesson, so you can get a feel for what you like. I did it the hard way, bought second hand clubs and read ~30 books and spent HOURS at the range by myself and on the course, and in the end the thing that helped the most was a pair of lessons from a pro who used video equipment to show me how to swing correctly. Wish I'd started there, I'd have enjoyed all those hours on the course a lot more.
Clubs:
Brand name clubs will usually last longer and have a better feel than off-brand clubs, so don't go cheap. If you're on a budget, try to find a place that does trade-ins. The country club types are always trading in last year's model, so chances are there's a place near you that has them. They come in standard lengths, but have varying degrees of 'whip' or flex in the shaft. This needs to match your swing...the aforementioned professional whom you've hopefully seen before making a club purchase can tell you what would work best for you in that department. Apart from that, make sure they're comfortable, that the grip is not uncomfortably large or small for your hand. If you find a great set of used ones that the grip just isn't right on, they can usually be re-gripped for you in the same shop for a reasonable price.
Getting out on the Course:
Find someone to go with who's halfway decent. This isn't that hard, although if you truly don't know anyone, the club can usually find someone to pair you with. Plenty of people show up by themselves for a round. Do make sure to call ahead, even if the club/course you're interested in trying doesn't require tee times. If you like to take things in stages, it's perfectly acceptable to play only the 'front' or 'back' nine holes, instead of the full 18. Some clubs/courses will even have a 9-hole rate. Public courses are generally less expensive and more accessible than private ones, but the private ones are generally more carefully manicured.
Golf is a challenging game that takes coordination, strategy and stamina, as well as the ability to compensate for and adjust your strategy to the day's course and weather conditions. I enjoy golf for the challenge, but it's also a fun way to just get outdoors for a few hours and enjoy good weather, great scenery and exercise. If you make it through all 18 holes, you'll be more tired than you would think. Good luck and above all, have fun with it.

I still can't understand why hitting a ball that is just sitting there is so difficult; that being true even when the lie of the ball is perfect. And then there is the fact that as many strokes are taken holing a ball out on the green from three feet to fifty feet as for going 350 yards. Playing golf at par requires a significant dedication to the game even if you are a gifted athlete.
What I hope to be pointing out is that enjoying the game of golf is a separate experience from playing the game of golf ... for most people. Advice: ummm, wilderness hiking would probably be a more satisfying pursuit.
I like the idea already offered to take lessons before you invest in clubs, and a bag, and golf balls, and a glove and an umbrella, and golf shoes and a cleaning brush and a towel, and tees and a marker.

Thanks for the detailed post/advice..I googled courses in the area, I found quite a few and there are city courses too. They're less expensive than the private ones. Like you said in your post they aren't as pretty yet, they'll serve the same purpose for me right..I'll wait and see what the private courses have to offer next week. I'm in Honolulu and I can only imagine how beautiful the courses will be in person. The views look amazing online..
I'm dying to see if I'll really be as tired as you mentioned, if so I'd be hooked... I love challenges.
