Default Explain bit torrents to me?

I don't know how this works, but I know that it's what I need to download movies, TV and songs I want (it's legal-ish here). So...what do I do?? Sorry, hopelessly retarded with this particular technology...I tried to set it up once before and fucked it all up. Step by step would be great!

You d/l and install bittorrent. You search for torrent sites that contain a torrent file for the content you wish to d/l. You run the file, and your pc starts to d/l your content from a number of torrent providers (seeders), each providing a piece. After you have a sufficient amount downloaded, you become a seeder and BT uses your upload bandwidth for other downloaders to use. After your content is loaded, you continue to be a seeder until you stop the torrent. You can get some files fairly quickly and there's a ton of content out there.

You need to download a BitTorrent client. I use Azureus.

Once you've done this, you go to torrent sites to download torrent files. I usually use www.torrentz.com.

Enter keywords of what you're looking for and it will come up with links to download the torrent files. Much like Kazaa, Limewire, etc., you can see which which files have been uploaded/downloaded more than others along with the health of the torrent. Once you've downloaded the torrent file, open it and it should automatically start downloading.

When you download torrents, click them to "open" rather than "save." That'll get things rolling faster and with less hassle.

I'll look up some more torrewnt sites for you.

Don't look at bittorrents as anything really different than limewire. Look at it as a different way of getting the content you want. Torrents decentralize the file so a ton of files don't exist in one place.

When you're "Downloading a Torrent" you're a peer. When you're done downloading it, if you don't remove it from your bittorrent client, you become a seeder. When you're seeding, you're letting other people get the file from you. This is what Bittorrent depends on. If no one is seeding the file, then, essentially, the file doesn't exist. (in rare cases there is enough pieces throughout peers to complete it though, I'm just being very basic.) The "Ratio" is that you should be at least 1 to 1. Which means you've sent the file out as many times as you've received it. HOWEVER, being good, you would let it go to others much more than you've received it. Your generosity IS what the system depends on.

So yes, if you can find a torrent for one file, then you can download one file. Typically you'll get full albums, in some cases you can view the properties of your torrent, and tell it to get the file you want the most, then stop downloading. However, in some sites, you'll be banned quickly if you don't at least have a share ration of 1 to 1.

    So yes

Either or. Depends on the site.

Is it dangerous to the health of my computer to 'seed'? My comp is recovering from a terrible case of chlamydia, and I don't want her to get re-infected.

Typically, no. If what you seed doesn't have a virus, then you will be ok. They're only receiving from you. Just scan what you download.

Always do that. NEVER just download and run an executable (.EXE file)

I believe it is legal to download and not upload copyrighted content in Canada. I think canada taxes blank cd's and some other devices and gives the money to media companies.

I like utorrrent to download torrents because it is small and convenient. You don't have to download alll the files in a torrent, you can pick individual files from it.

Suprised no one mentioned the http://thepiratebay.org/ They make the news a lot. You can also google a name and torrent to find something.

Some canadian isp companies charge per mb after a maximum is reached. Make sure you can download all you want without paying extra.

Infection comes from running an infected program you download (which is not uncommon). Check the comments on the torrent website to make sure no one mentioned a virus. mp3's cannot have a virus. Seeding is uploading without downloading. No more dangerous than downloading.

The pirate bay is also being currently monitored by the RIAA. Just an FYI. If you have your bittorrent peer scanner running, you'll see a LOT of red flags for flagged i.p.s

Wow, thanks, didn't realize. Am in trouble if they don't like TV show downloaders. Just to add more info a lot of people use peerguardian or ProtoWall or such to block malicious users.

Emule or limewire are also used to download but without torrents. For individual songs or small files this may be more convenient.

Downloading (peer) and seeding can eat up bandwidth, so if you're surfing or moving data in other ways, you'll want to adjust your bitrate. There will be a sliding bar control to set the bitrate. Just experiment with it. You won't want to go full-bore if you're using your computer or if there are others on your home network. The beauty is that you can slow down the rate and just let it run-overnight or for a couple days.
