    Default Compeuter folks-laptop as monitor?

So I really want to get a laptop, so I'm not stuck in the noisy computer labs at school btw. classes. However, I really don't want to create more clutter in my house. I thought by some compu-sellers (never the best advice i've found, but eh) I was told that you can use a laptop as a monitor for a regular tower computer (which I will be keeping). Is this true? It would be mightily handy to get rid of my monster monitor (yeah, I should just get a flat screen one, I know) and use the lappy for a monitor, then take it to go. Thoughts? Was the sales person on crack? Should I just make room and deal?

    Okay back to studying.

    Yes. On crack.

Unless you use the laptop to connect to your tower using the remote desktop client. You're not using it as a monitor per se, but as a remote control. Very convenient b/c you can use the tower pc anywhere in the house if you set up a network.

As others have said you would not be connecting the Tower directly to your laptop but it will work as part of a network. Something else to consider if you want to de-clutter; For less than $200 you can replace your clunky CRT monitor with a 17" or 19" inch flat panel monitor which you CAN feed from either your tower or your lap top.
FWIW, I have two laptops but I still keep my tower around as a back-up storage device. It's a good safety net.

    good luck on your mid-terms!

Never get a 19 inch LCD. It's just larger pixels, not a higher resolution.

A 200 dollar LCD is not going to be worth having either, IMO.

To answer the original question, the answer is "yes", but it's not going to be that simple.

Amen to that. I never sit at the tower any more. I use it like a server and use drive mappings on my laptop. Seldom need to connect to it directly any more. Heck, I can even watch movies stored on the tower over the wireless to my laptop, and use the laptop anywhere in the house - out by the pool - in bed - on the can....

This is what I'm probably going to do. I don't have the savings to spend for the laptop I want, but I think it's time for the huge monitor of doom to see the curb. I will definitly be keeping my tower.

And thanks! One more. I may die.
