Default I'm looking for uplifting books that are not cheesy or religious

    ...if anything like that exists.

I'm really trying to change my attitude towards life, and I think it would help to have a couple of good books on that sort of thing. I know I'm being very general, but I don't know how to specify what I'm looking for.

What I don't want is anything religious or trite (no Deepak Chopra, Oprah, or Iyanla Vanzant). I do have "An Open Heart" by the Dalai Lama. I might start reading that first. But if you guys have suggestions I am open to them.

    Thanks!

heh i still love chicken soup for the soul series, but im guessing thats not what your after

i know you said no religion, but there are quite a few good buddist books with little stories and writings on positivity and making yourself happy.

Wayne Dyer is kinda religious, I would say he's more religious than spiritual. His site is DrWayneDyer.com. I also like Caroline Myss, her site is myss.com. But Wayne Dyer is amazing.

I love the book The Secret.
It's not relgious but it's pretty motivating. They also make it in a movie.
Its all about visualizing and stuff.

Well, he's Jewish, but Harold Kushner's books are enormously uplifting to me. I recently read "Overcoming Life's Disappointments" and it really opened my eyes. He has a lot of other books that are just as good. And he writes for the general public, not just Jews.

Anything by Kahlil Gibran. There's a Christian undercurrent but it's beautiful, significant and uplifting writing on its own.

Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. "

Mitch Albom, "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" (not religious, despite its title), and "Tuesdays with Morrie."

greatly, greatly affected me and my attitude... and how I look at things.

Same here regarding "The Five People...". And I normally don't go for books like this.

I have a memoir I have read a couple of times. Its probably not the kind of uplifting you are talking about, but it always reminds me that anything is possible and that things can get worse and can always get better, etc., about changing your life.

Its called "A Piece of Cake" by Cupcake Brown.

It's an inspiring memoir that details a womans journey from a horrible childhood into foster care, abuse, rape, gangs, drugs, becoming intensely cracked out to where she was barely alive - and then her journey back up that ends in an unbeleivable transformation. Its a really good book and the fact that its all true is what makes the entire journey truly inspiring.

Pema Chodron is religious (buddhist), but good for changing your life view. Paul McKenna's 'Change your life in 7 days' is rocking my world right now (sounds cheesy, I know, but I like it. It's al about visualizing your better life and making it so.)

The ones that come to mind for me are The Blue Day Book if you like animals and How We Choose to Be Happy which I just started reading.

Heh, I was going to suggest Tuesdays With Morrie...I read that during a wait at the airport & people were looking at me like, Why is she crying?

It might be categorized with Jonathan Livingston Seagull but if someone gets something out of it, the more the better.
