Default List your Natural Mood Enhancers

I'm out of happy juice. My brain has simply depleted it. And it will come back as long as I take the proper actions to heal myself spiritually and emotionally.

But I have to get out of this funk and I'm not going back to pharmaceuticals. I am perfectly happy with my Adderol but it has no effect on my temporary depression.

I'm looking at a lot of supplements online, and I'm pretty familiar with most of the standards. I have some 5-HTP pills at home which I used to use after taking E. Not sure if they've gone bad though....

I would like one supplement that has these things in it:
    SAM-E
    GABA
    L-Tyrosine
    Vitamins B 3,6,12
    St. Johns
    Omega 3
    EPA
    DHA
    Maybe...lithium orotate

Obviously I won't find that in one super happy pill, but I have seen a few combos online. However I am going to look myself at Whole Foods later.

Anyone use anything with decent efficacy? Its only going to be temporary, although I know these things take time to work. I'll snap out of it. I'm just emotionally drained and have been on the brink tears constantly for the last week.

I wish I knew the answer. I have been feeling pretty rotten the last few days myself. I know exercise and sunlight have positive effects on the mood. I have heard certain foods can help such as asparagus but unfornuately I don't care for it. St. Johns Wort I heard can help too but you might want to watch out for what you mix it with. I know you aren't suppose to mix it with anti-depressants and certain other mood altering supplements.

I'm a fan of 5 HTP. I don't notice any immediate effects. But I do notice that I'm just pretty even keel overall.

Also, I don't know what your stance on tanning is, but I was recently doing some reading/googling, and came across an article about the link between tanning and depression. The majority thought is that it is because of the light therapy, but this article said that it's because of some of the interactions between certain ingredients in your tanning lotion. Specifically they were referring to:
L-Tyrosine and Copper Peptides. Something about the chemical reaction of the two combined is the reason why people feel a "pick me up" from tanning. I'd have to regoogle it to find the link. But maybe that is something to look into (Tyrosine and copper together).

Ooooh, I love asparagus! And I do like to tan on occacion, will do that tomorrow.

So here is what I have:
    1. Natrol 5-HTP
    2. Whole Foods brand Sam-e
    3. Weil Mood Support Formula with Folic Acid, Omega-3, EPA, DHA, and St. John's Genital Wart

I'll be chugging large quantities of those for a while. I always take more than indicated for effectiveness.

From my personal exp., I'd go with 5-HTP as the main gun, and supplement with the amino acids, oils and vits. Leave the St.Johns Wort and SAM-e as backup plans 1 & 2...mixing 3 targeted mood enhancers, even if they're natural, will only make it more likely that they alter the effects of one another.

Try taking a complex B vitamin..All of the B vitamin work in sync and if one is lacking than it really does no good. You need to add vitamin C to your list too.
I agree with Scarlett on the oils and the amino acids. Make sure you're getting enough protein as well, a lack of leads to depression
Also, you should try Bikram yoga..It helps me keep a lot.

Sex would probably depress her more. It's not a universal cure all.

Have a steak. Avoid carbohydrates. Interrogation squads often deprive prisoners of protein meals and stuff them with dense carbs to make them more miserable and pliable for questioning.

I had sex tonight. It didn't make me feel much better. No more sex with guys who don't care about me.

I've been working out and that has been wonderful.

Steak? Hmmmm....those tend to make me so stuffed and bloated, but I'd be down for one this week.

I came across this while doing a search for someone else, it might be useful to you:

Folic acid, which can be found in spinach and orange juice, helps to decrease depression. As depression can cause insomnia, increasing folic acid will also aid in getting better sleep.

Many people eliminate fats from their diets entirely, but this can increase the chance of depression. There are certain essential fats that promote the absorption of nutrients into cells and allow waste to escape these cells. When this natural cleansing does not take place, depression increases. These essential fats can be found in nuts, seeds, oily fish such as tuna and oils such as olive.

Nogo. I think it will take more than chocolate to get me to a better place. Mostly time. I guess I could hit the tanning bed before it closes, but I'm gonna stay here and read SW and excersice my kegel muscles instead.

I know some people use st john's wort though I think I read somewhere about a bad drug interaction or something.

My pick me ups (I have depression and am on prozac) are more behavioral than supplements. I find when I'm depressed I should probably do the OPPOSITE of what I want to do- instead of sit around and mope, I should get up, shower, go see people, take a walk, etc.

I've also read that eating fatty fish like salmon helps. along with nuts.

Yesterday I felt absolutely beyond awful but felt better after taking my dog for a walk, getting gelato, cleaning the house, reading Harry Potter (lol I'm in the middle of the last book) and watching LA Ink. So basically, think about what makes you happy and do it.

I find that singing like an idiot to my favorite music is a huge pick up as well. And, well, sex and chocolate. LOL.

I follow a Paleo type diet and it helps take the edge off. B-vitamins help too.

St. John's Wort worked for awhile, but in the end didn't make enough of a difference for me.

    5-htp just fucked me up.

I agree with increasing proteins and fats. It can really mellow you out when your blood sugar is stable.

Yes...it can interfere with Birth Control....so if you are on it, dont take St John Wort(unless you are cool with getting pg!)

I was just put on anti anxiety drugs..the natural stuff did nothing for me.

BUt when I need to relax, I get a snack and a good book and watch trash tv(yes, all at once...)

No worries about birth control, I can't have children. Fucked that one up really well. None of this stuff is effective and the drinking is making everything worse. I am so miserable.

You just started, Kat. Most of that stuff is cumulative (except the 5HTP, but even that will build up and be more effective after a while), so be patient and be nice to yourself.

Do you get enough magnesium and fat?

Default Could it be your diet?

I had been feeling really shitty and even more ADD than usual the past few weeks and then BAM-O, I had the worst yeast infection ever. So, I went on a diet where I cut out sugar and a bunch of stuff. I feel so much better. Last night I was dancing around the kitchen singing Dean Martin songs. Do you know how long it's been since I've sung the "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's Amore" song? Forever!

Look, it's not always what we want to hear but sometimes eating organic, natural foods and cutting out processed foods can make us feel better than any additional supplement. But, additional supplements can help. I suggest reading the book, "Feast without the Yeast."

    buona fortuna, bambina!

i don't know what the weather is like around where you are , but it might be to blame, at least partially. its rainy gloomy and miserable here, so it makes me pissy as well. and the pissiness only gets worse in the winter. anyway, i tried sam-e, and it did nothing for me, however i found this argentinian tea i'm totally addicted to, its called mate. it has mood stimulies, antioxidants, and some kind of weird caffeine that doesn't make you jittery... i also think there is something to the tanning thing, but i just broke down and bought the sad lights to use this winter, cause my issues are season related
