Default the worst pedicure ever and now an ingrown toenail!!!!

The other week I had the most horrible, painful pedicure I have ever experienced. she cut my cuticles (which Im not fond of anyway) and then on one foot she got my big toe and got these pliars and pulled a massive chunk of nail out of the side!! It was so damn painful and it bled really bad. Then for the rest of the pedicure I was in pain esp when she painted my toenails and it got into the cut!!

Now I think that toenail has become ingrown. Im really pissed off. I am going to have to go to a podiatrist to get it fixed probably.

I still have no idea why she did that to begin with.

Can I treat an ingrown toenail myself tho? it's so sore to put shoes on.

Please, please, please don't try to fix it your self. Just last month my best friend had to get half of her toenail removed because she tried to do it herself. She now has to wear one of those awful shoes for at the very least a month and soak her foot in peroxide. I looks horrible!. Just imagine your big toe only having half a nail!

I get ingrown toenails on my big toes ALL the time. I agree...go to a DR. I should too but I'd be there constantly.

I soak my feet in hot water and epsom salts which softens the nails.. Then pry the edge up and clip it.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem, RIGHT NOW! :-)
the girl didn't make me bleed, but she did cut a huge chunk out of the side. I've had toenails grow towards the skin before so I figured I would just wait it out and push the skin back like I normally do.
Well this morning it was swollen and when I pushed on the side there was pus! Gross....
My mom is my doc, (she's actually a pediatrician, but I'm still young, and she is my mommy ;-) so I immediately called her. She said to soak it in hot water to let all the pus drain, then use neosporin. Every day for five days and to keep pushing the skin/ pulling the nail to make sure it's growing on top of the skin. She said if that doesn't help (the infection doesn't go away) or I can't get it from under the skin then to definitely see someone. (We live four hours apart, she can't look herself.)
But my mom also knows me really well and this is through the messenger so since your's sounds more serious than mine, you probably should see a doc. This is just a suggestion in case you're not the doctor type.
    Hope it feels better!

I don't know if either one of you want to try this but, eating a clove or 2 of fresh raw garlic will help it heal a lot quicker..I'm so sorry this happened to you..
I've had that happen before too and they do it so quickly you can't even stop them !!
Now I tell them not to cut too much off the sides..

I dont know if I could eat a glove of garlic, I dont like the taste? maybe I could attempt to swallow it whole with water?? Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I'll try soaking it. I dont mind going to doctors, Im kind of there all the time already coz I am a hypochrondiac unfortunately.

This experience has put me off pedicures tho, I dont like the cuticles being cut, I prefer them just to push them back.

    Sorry, Jaizine.

I know this doesn't help right now, but let me say first, no matter the calibur of your pedicurist, always put colorless iodine on your toes when you get home for 2-3 days after a pedi. One little fleck of dirt getting into an exposed area = an infection.

For right now you can try putting colorless iodine on it, but most likely a doctor is going to have to punch a hole in the infected area to let the junk out and to get oxygen in there to heal. They may give you antibiotics.

Do you have a history of ingrowns? If you do, your podiatrist can cut a sliver of the toe off (it's not too bad). He won't be able to do the permanent procedure if you have an infection, but once it's healed they can do a permanent procedure.

Definitely go to a podiatrist. This is not the kind of infection you want to mess around with. But remember the colorless iodine in the future. It'll keep your toes out of trouble.

For anyone with ingrown troubles (not infections), I highly recommend this product:

You put it on the corners of your big toes once a day and it keeps the sides of the nails from hardening and gripping into your skin.

They can do a permanent procedure to prevent them? Now I'm very curious...

Thank-you Vicacious. No I dont have a history of them. I thought I had one years ago but it went away on it's own so it probably wasn't.

Thanks for the advise thought, very helpful.

If you try to pry it out yourself, make sure you cut or file the edge to allow the skin time to heal. Also, soak for 30 min 2 times a day in a solution of 2 tbsp iodine per liter of warm water. Hubby just had a horrible infection (they had to lance the side of his toe) and this is what the podiatrist had us do. Do this for several weeks until the area looks better. If it gets really bad though they may recommend antibiotics (the guy said they wouldn't have been necessary if he would have taken care of the problem early on).

CollegeCutie, I would just use preventative measures like the softening drops. I'd only do the permanent procedure if you already have ingrowns. (The procedure does make your nail skinnier depending on how much they take off on the side. If you're in pain, you're not going to care, but otherwise, you might not want to change your nail shape, you know?)

Permanent procedures for ingrown nails take about 5 minutes. It involvel a bit of local anesthesia, and putting an acid in the corner of the nail after cutting out the side. The acid is called Phenol, and you can work on it the next day. If its infected you can't do the procedure that day, and it requires a second visit for the application of the acid. The procedure is relatively inexpensive and safe, In fact the procedure has been done for over 40 years.

Other methods work, but this is the most common way to do it all over the world.
