    Default Plays/theatre and stripping...

    Probably a futile effort but...

I'm seeking plays that contain a female lead who is a stripper.
I'm heavily involved in theatre and I'm working on a course right now that examines the self in relationship to the creation of original works, and part of my assignment right now is to investigate one of the roles I assume in my life by performing a contemporary (already published) monologue. My instructor thinks it would be a good idea to perform a character who is a stripper, so that she can see and I can observe/understand that side of me better in relation to my theatre work. All I can really think of right now is Closer (the play that the movie with Natalie Portman is based on) and Shopping and Fucking.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or know of any? Obscure or well-known is fine.
Also, female characters who aren't strippers but are involved in the sex industry, OR just stripper personalities (you know the stereotype) are fine, too.

    Thanks!

I don't but I'd be really interested to see what people come up with. I wish i was still involved in theater.

Is there some actor/theater newspaper you can buy in San Fran? They'll probably post a description of characters for various plays and mention if she's a stripper. You could always team up with a writer and create your own play...

There really aren't that many. Hurly-Burly has a dancer in it, I believe, but the part is small. David Mamet has a kick ass play called Edmond with various shady street characters, there may be a prostitute in there.

There is another older play about go-go dancers, I think Goldie Hawn or someone did it on Broadway, but I can't remember the damn name and author, I'll try to remember.

How about Mimi from "Rent"? Will a musical not work for your class?

Gypsy and Rent both wont work because they don't have suitable monologues, plus it's technically not recommended that you do a mainstream musical.
However, I've been on the hunt for the past few days, and found a couple good things (but I'm going to look at what you guys suggested, too).
If anyone wants to know, I found:
Landscape of the Body- John Guare- there's a girl who works in porn (Rosalind), and a girl who poses for photos
Hello From Bertha- Tennessee Williams- about a dying prostitute named Bertha
The Time of Your Life- William Saroyan- there's a prostitute/burlesque performer named Kitty who has two terrific monologues about her dreams.
Neil LaBute- this author in general tends to bring in "shady" characters, or characters who are faced with challenging situations. A lot of girls take money for sex, etc.

That's all that I've found for now, but hopefully it can help any of you guys who may be looking for the same thing in the future. I'm using a piece from Landscape of the Body, and another from Bash by LaBute, which is about a girl who got abused by her teacher in junior high.

To answer an earlier question, for this assignment I cannot write my own piece, because we're supposed to use an outside, already published play. However just know that I've been in theatre for awhile and have written plays as well, and I've got something that I've been working on in which the female lead is a stripper, and portrayed in an objective, if not positive light. I didn't know how underrepresented we are until this search- and in NYC- the mecca of the theatre world of all places!

(still open to suggestions if you guys know of more!)

ooooh, there's a prostitute in the opening scene of The Blue Room. Those are all short scenes though, no monologues probably. Hmm. Good play though.

David Rabe's (the Hurlyburly playwright) In the Boom Boom Room features a stripper prominently. Even moreso than Hurlyburly.

There is a UK play called Strippers written I think by John Godber, he has done plays on nightclub bouncers and the like which are very funny. Libby an ex Browns girl { now head of production at a TV company} apeared in a version of it in the mid 90s.
