Smiley A Newbie with some questions. :)

First of all, my name is Kate.
I'm eighteen and a senior in high school.
I'm in the chorus because I love to sing; especially Broadway musicals and operas. I sang at Carnegie Hall in New York with the National Youth Choir when I was seventeen as well as some other prominent local theaters. So I'm very accomplished in that area and not afraid to brag about it. Forgive my lack of modesty.

I've always told my mom that exotic dancing was going to get me through college. I love feeling sexy and having every male's attention as I dance around seems like a great profession if only for a little while.
I'm not sure about anything yet because I'm also seriously considering forensic/clinical psychology for the FBI and I remember reading here that some people won't hire you because you've been an exotic dancer. :/
That's profiling if you ask me. Lol.

But I'm also an aspiring author on the side of everything.
Right now I'm writing a story where the main character is an exotic dancer, but I don't know any of the dance move names or what names go to what moves. I looked online for ages to find at least a list or something and found nothing that I was looking for.

Maybe some of you lovely ladies can help me out when you introduce yourselves?

...I'm big on giving hugs. Lol.

Hello and welcome! What exactly did you need answered? And just to throw my probably unwanted opinion in... please don't start dancing until you graduate high school!

Welcome. I thought the same thing when I was in H.S but I didn't start until recently didn't have the courage until now. But ask away, everone is really helpful in answering questions.

Oh of course! Haha. I know my priorities.
    School first, then dancing.

But I was just wondering what some of the dance moves were called and what names went with what moves. o_O

I always love to try new things. Once I get enough money, I'm going to go to one of those strip aerobics classes just to see if I like the basic idea of it. I'm kinda broke right now.

And from what I see, all the people on this site seem really sweet and helpful.

I don't think many of the moves have names really. Maybe some of the basic pole moves, but most moves people make up their own names for, so there's no one single name.

I agree with what has been posted... you sound bright and ambitious, but if you want stripping to get you through college, then wait til you are IN college to start... it just saves a lot of unneccessary drama in HS.... although you may like to think it doesn't matter what others think (and that's a great attitude... but unfortunately not too realistic) dancing in HS is not 100% guaranteed to be kept under wraps, and not only could a major stigma be attached to you, but there could be some consequences if certain people found out... think about suddenly finding your teacher/principal at your club! It's just better to wait. Savor HS in youthfulness. Plenty of time to see everything else later.

As for dance moves... only pole moves have names, and most people don't even bother to learn the names. It's not really that important. Floorwork really doesn't use names.

    Hey..another aspiring psychologist!

I'm also studying to be a clinical psychologist and am a 2nd year doctoral student, but damn those loans are giving me nightmares already.. People say "yeah take out loans", but what happens when we graduate and have to pay them back? I know psychologists who have been paying loans for the past 20 years! If stripping can help me pay them faster, why not?

A stripping job definitely works well with a daytime school schedule, and the unpaid internships that we psychology students have to do lol.

But, I don't plan on putting this on my resume. It's good to have other types of jobs and internships to put down as references.

I'm definitely going to wait until after high school. Even though I'm not popular enough to create that big of a ruckus if I started stripping now anyway. Lol.

What are your plans for the future, if you don't mind me asking?
I know that ideal dancers are probably in their 20s and 30s. So what happens when you're like, 40? Do you have to look for a new job or what?

It all depends on how much you're in shape and how good you look. When that starts to run out, then you usually stop. But for many gals on here, it hasn't yet and they've passed 40!

if the fbi is mean about hiring strippers, then say you waited tables at a gogo bar or something.

I have names for moves. I name stuff after who I've seen doing it. But they're kind of in jest, like one name is The Chloe Kicky Thingy.

But when I've seen some of Alena Downs vids on YouTube, she calls her pole work by different names. I call my pole work, Sliding Down Like A Firefighter. I wish my dance moves were fancy enough to deserve good names.

And welcome to SW. And I agree, wait til after HS!

Your dance career will be as lengthy as you want it to be. I've known dancers in their 50's. Others have seen dancers beyond even that age.

As far as dance moves go I would recommend buying a few DVD's like http://www.amazon.com/Art-Exotic-Dan...168531-6455234

Honestly, the easiest thing to do would be to go to a club and watch and learn but since you have some time to kill while waiting for graduation you can pick up a few moves at home.

The best way to learn dance moves/names of moves is to visit clubs, and spend alot of time reading the info on this forum. It's kind of hard to sum up something like that in one post.

Smart girl. My plans?? ehhe you're sweet! Umm, right now I'm a political science major, have about 1.5 yrs til I finish my B.A., then I will go on to a Masters in Social Policy of some sort, and then hopefully go for a law degree. The goal is to become a human rights lawyer... I specifically want to work in international womens' human rights law, for a body like the U.N. (dream job) or a prominent (and effective) NGO/GO. There's quite a need, to say the least....

Its good that you have had experience performing in front of people. This will help you being on stage. If you are considering the entertainment industry as a career, the non-adult entertainment industry that is, it would be best to keep you dancing discreet. Well even some of those other things you are considering too.

I don't say anything. It's the FBI. They do a background check on what I've done, where I've been, they talk to my family members and family friends to get a feel of what I'm like...they'll know if I stripped or if I waitressed. They are Big Brother. o_O Lol.

I'm guessing they don't find out and just look at what's ever on there. Nobody has asked me when I left out certain jobs on applications.

If you search for Alena Downs on youtube, you'll find a couple of her how-to movies for pole work and at the end, she usually has a list of what moves she did. But again, that's pole work, not regular dance moves. Other than that, it's just a shimmy and a shake!

    Welcome aboard!

Oh! And I told my boyfriend that I signed up on this site to talk to real dancers and explore what I wanted to do in college and he gave me this disapproving look. Haha. I told him that he just had to get used to it.

A note about skipping jobs on resume. Clubs do have you fill out paperwork. SOME clubs 1099 you which means you have paperwork following you around with the club name. Hopefully they will have a company name rather than club name and you can bs your way around it.

If you DO dance and dont want to be traced later never work for a company that 1099s... - also dont put your job down anywhere (even a rental app, credit card app, etc) as it can (and will) show up on your credit report and can be easily traced.

On a side note : read around on SW. Dancing is lucritive - but its not easy. You dont trapeze around with guys throwing money at you. It is mentally, emotionally and physically hard.

If you have a set plan for school and dancing - make it work for you. Dont get off track (its easy to do) esp if youre young.

I agree to wait until after HS. Youll be done soon. Dont try to grow up too soon. You have PLENTY of time to be an adult and have responsibilities and bills and all the other stuff that comes with adulthood. Dont rush into it.

And its good youre open with your mom. I see so many girls that have to hide dancing and it seems almost more draining than the actual job.

    And good luck!

I don't understand what 1099 is. I know it's not easy. That's why I want to do it. It's a way to have fun, work hard, and lose weight.
And my mom actually wanted to go to strip aerobics with me. Lol.

I'm a writer as well, and I would not recommend writing about something unless you've experienced it. You have to have experience to write with authority in my opinion, and dancing is definitely something you need to experience to write about. The moves don't really have names, the most effective way to explain what they are is to describe them.

Also, since you're an aspiring author and want to work for the FBI, why not become super accomplished in whatever you choose to do and then go "oh yeah, and I paid for college with lapdances". What would they do then?
