A girl at work tonight told me that it is best to work out with the weights first, and do cardio second. Is this true? What will using weights first do for you?
I'm curious. Thanks.
Absolutely. Every trainer I've ever had said that's the best way to do it. I think it's just to maximize your workout. I just read something in Fitness Rx that said you burn more fat that way but I forgot exactly why.

Well before doing weights you shsould at least do a little cardio to warm up your muscles. You might just do a 5 min walk/run and then do weights when your muscles are warm.
I personally could not do weights then cardio I have to do cardio first coz after I weight train my muscles are too sore to do any serious cardio.
There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.
Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.
Do a short warm up with cardio and then weights and then complete your normal cardio routine. This what I have always been told...something about it will help you burn more fat if you make sure you get your weights in first.

Yep, I was told the same thing by any trainer. They told me the same reason too, but I'm curious as to why this is. Oh well...
Isocrates: “Democracy destroys itself because it abuses its right to freedom and equality. Because it teaches its citizens to consider audacity as a right, lawlessness as a freedom, abrasive speech as equality, and anarchy as progress.”
I was always told that if you do cardio last, and do a lot of it that you'll cause your body to break down all the muscle you worked hard to get. Or that it won't heal properly or something.
My personal trainer would always have me walk on the treadmill for about 10 minutes before the real workout (just for a warm-up), and then I'd go back to walking/running after the session to burn some calories. He said that if I'd do the cardio before, I'd be too tired to do the rest.
But I don't know if that's for everyone or just for me. I know that he was right about me tought![]()

Isn't it because doing cardio after weight training helps dissipate the lactic acid in your muscles thereby preventing cramps and keeping them limber?
At least that's what I was taught.

OK usually I do cardio first (I'm not too tired to do resistance training afterwards) but hey if weights first burns more fat then when I go back in on Monday I'll do 10 min cardio first, then weights, then more cardio.
Then a steam bath and a shower. And then eat an acai energy bowl and take a nap. Then have sex and go to work...
I've lost 6 lbs so far, but I find that I've hit a plateau. Maybe this will help.
^^ how much cardio do you do after your weights? and what is a acai energy bowl? im dying to know???
thanks...sorry to TJ!
Usually I do 45 min cardio, then 30 min weights. But starting tomorrow I'm taking the advice of those present and doing 10 min cardio, then 30 min weights, then 30-40 min cardio.
An acai energy bowl is made out of acai, a berry found in the Brazilian rain forests. It is high in vitamins & antioxidants. It tastes like a cross between blueberries and chocolate. They take acai and blend it with bananas and soymilk, then top it with strawberries, mangoes, bananas, and hemp granola. It's about 400 calories and it keeps me energized and full for hours. Soooooo good!
