    Default Treadmill VS Oldschool Track

Before I try out at the upscale club that is close to my house I want to do some serious toning. Im not really tring to loose a lot of weight because im finally at a 'just right weight' for me but I would like to look at lil more toned.

Is there a difference in jogging on the track compared to a treadmill? Im not really experienced in what each has to offer my body?

I personally prefer running outdoors because you've got to put in the extra effort to cope with the different terrains of the environment and weave your way around obstacles (red lights, crossing roads, etc) which breaks down the monotony of training in a gym.

On the other hand, the good thing about treadmills is that you control your workouts (e.g. speed, incline, time) and you get to work out in comfortable weather conditions. Also, the continual motion of the treadmill's belt gives you the inertia to keep you running which can be a good thing if you're just starting out.

I prefer the outdoors but, indoors can be more controlled..For example if I'm walking backwards, excellent for rear and lower body. I'll do it on the treadmill.

I prefer running outdoors when I can, but I always warn people that if you have weak ankles, you're going to have to be careful. Concrete sidewalks and asphalt roads aren't exactly the greatest shock absorbers out there and you could do some serious damage if you don't listen to your body.

I prefer outdoors to indoors for the reasons already explained by others.

If you're doing something like HIIT training (aka sprints), it's easier on a track because you don't have to press the buttons to control the speed. You're also fighting the resistance of the ground so you're actually using more glutes/hamstrings. You have to *push off* from an unmoving surface.

Hill training on a treadmill is closest to giving that *push off* effect, but it's still not quite the same.

Wow I never really thought of that, but it's so true. On a treadmill, really all you have to do is lift your knees, but outdoors you're actually propelling yourself forward.

That's me, exactly. Plus which, I'm a nerd, and I like all the display controls and buttons and meters and computerized guts of your typical modern treadmill. The final reason I like treadmills: I'm worried that if I fall down and hurt myself in some rarely used wooded running trail, I'll become dinner for a wild dog pack. Don't tell me this doesn't happen!!! It does--and more often than you'd think.
