I know it varies from bright red to darker brown but this is really dark brown, it almost looks black.

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.
Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.
Yeah...dark stuff is old blood. It's normal, espicially towards the end of yoru period.

I also get it in the beginning of my period as well, like the very first day. It is very light before I start to cramp and bleed heavily.
Me too Mily. I get it at the very beginning and the very end.

It usually would not worry me, I have just had such weird menstration lately.
I usually skip my period while on the pill, have done for like 10 years without incident. I took a break recently and did not get a period for 7 weeks. Now Ive been back on it for 2 months and have had break thru bleeding every day for two months but no cramps.
2 days ago I got my period (it seems as it's more than break thru bleeding and I have bad cramps).
I have been to the doctor, she isn't really sure what's going on. I had a normal pap smear result a couple of months ago.

I read somewhere that brown / black menstal blood is old blood.
Sounds like a thinning utarian lining to me, especially because of the breakthrough bleeding. This can be a bad thing. You should talk to your obgyn. For me, when I had the exact same thing, caused by my taking Yasmine, it turned out to be that the birth control made my body think it was going through menopause. Took months of estrogen therapy and eventually going off bc for an entire year to only slightly return it to normal. This may not be the case for you, but that is what happened to me and I was only 21- going through menopause.

Mine is often dark on my first day.
Yea dark the first day, and dar the last couple days for me....i have not had black though.

Back before my IUD, when my periods were much heavier, i never got much NORMAL blood-only blackish/thick mucous-y clumps.
Now its brownish and so dry its practically powder, but thats just because the IUD has pretty much gotten rid of the uterine lining so there's not much to come OUT.
I'd say its pretty normal, but given your BC issues, see the Gyn just in case!
These period threads make me queesy, lol! I'm not sure why, I get all the same black blood and clots as above....
