    Default Vision Insurance

My contact lens prescription expired over a year ago and no one will fill my prescription. (I can't figure out why, it's for contacts, not some pill I'm gonna sell on the black market... ) The current pair of lenses I'm wearing irritates my eyes so badly, I don't even know how many months I've been using them, but I'm so afraid of the cost of getting an exam and new prescription filled. I googled vision insurance, but so many sites look poorly put together, and I'm afraid I'll get scammed. Obviously my employer doesn't offer benefits since I'm technically a contract-worker and off the books. Do any of you have vision insurance that you didn't get through an employer that is legit and affordable? Also, how long after you sign up until you can go get an exam? I need it ASAP. My eyes are so sad..

An eye exam isn't very expensive. I think it's probably cheaper to just pay for your vision exams than to buy insurance, unles syou have ongoing sevre issues, but if all you need is a box of contacts, it isn't much.

Eye exam is gonna be about $120, and the contacts usualy run around $30-60 a box(depending on brand and yoru eye needs), which is 4-6 lenses. It cost more if yoru vision is different in each eye, cause then yuo would need to order 2 boxes instead of one.

So for under $200 you can get the exam and the contacts.

They won't fill an expired prescription for the same reason you can't fill a pill script. It's still a script that is expired. And your vision may have changed in the past year, if they filled the expired script which was wrong for your eyes, it could damage your vision.

But you really should get it done soon. Wearing old lenses for to long can damage yoru eyes and cause vision problems to worsen.

Kaylinn's right. It'll be cheaper and easier for you to just go without insurance and get an exam. Even if you did have insurance you'd have to pay for part of the exam. Insurances don't cover refractions (about $25) and you'll probably have a co-pay. With these fees and the monthly premium, it just isn't worth it.

Hurry up and go to the optometrist before you need to see an ophthalmologist because you've messed up your corneas.

Yeah, you're better off just paying for the exam, the insurance isn't even worth it. Even when I had vision insurance, it never covered the dr's I went to, and I still had to pay everything.

K, well tomorrow I'm calling around to find out how much an exam is. I know my vision could have changed, I'm just going through some things financially and really would rather skip the exam until I have the extra cash. It sounds retarded that you can't fill an expired lens prescription .. For something like hydrocodone or xanax or whatever I TOTALLY understand that, but contacts?! Whatever. Thanks ladies, no scam insurance for me! Gonna get my eyes fixed yay!

Yeah, I had to go through that whole not being able to refill my contacts prescription a while back and it pissed me off. I had to get an eye exam just to get more of the same exact contacts. I agree that insurance for vision isn't worth it.

Call around a few vision doctors and try to work out a deal. Dentists and eye doctors are VERY amenable to getting cash clients. Filing insurance paperwork is a huge pain in the ass.

It's BS, but it's unfortunately the way it is. As far as I'm concerned, its your body, and you should be able to do what you want with it, but unfortunately "the system" doesn't agree.

You'd better get new ones soon, as you'll damage your eyes. In the mean-time, if you have glasses, wear those. Even if they're a bit out of whack, you'll still be better off than with contacts irritating your eyes.

I don't know what it's like in the U.S., but around here optometrists don't charge all that much for a prescription, anyway.

PCQ- As prior posters say- better off just paying for exam out of pocket. I have "VI" where I work, but it isn't that good if you go "out of network", esp. on replacement glasses. So, if corporations skimping, then probably not worthwhile for individual.

As for 1 yr limit on prescriptions- vision can change over time, thus the "practice" of requiring exams periodically to fill prescription.

Well, you still might need to get the exam, but they can agree to a set rate. And my eye doctor let me use the same script for about 2 years before they declined my refill.

You can check out Maria Quintanilla off Lamar and Ben White. They've been starting to charge additional for little extras though in the last year, so I might be looking for a new place to be honest.

She was great at working out a good rate when I was uninsured.

Thanks for all the advice ya'll! And I do think my eyes have changed, I notice things are blurry when I wear my glasses even when they're super clean. I really just wanted something to get me by, even if it's the wrong prescription, but it's probably better for my health to just suck it up and get the stupid exam. I'm scheduling one this week! Stupid eyes, I have the eyesight of an 80-yr old. And really, my legs are getting to that condition, too!!! I'm feeling so old lately..

You might want to get some drops from the eye doctor when you're there. Your eyes might be swollen and irritated from old lenses. Last time my doc gave me some stuff that worked well, a liquid steroid that was very soothing. I'm not sure how much it costs unininsured, but its a tiny bottle, can't be too much
