I picked up the Mane n' Tail conditioner today becuase I hear that it's great, and it doesn't have any silicone in it. Does anyone else have experience with the Mane n' Tail line?

I used it for my horses lol.... it made their tails so silky soft and easy to comb and braid for shows
I have used it on my own hair in the past and it worked nicely. Though im a total treseme addict when it comes to my hair.

I used to use both the shampoo and conditioner..I liked them, I don't remember why I stopped using them.

I think it started to build up on my hair after using it for a few months .

Yeah, it may start to cause build up. Horses mane and tails are very coarse and thick, and this stuff was made for them.
It's good stuff onhuman hair...but I'd use it once a week as a deep conditioner or somerhitng, but not for every day use.....unless...you bought a good clarifyign shampoo to use weekly as well. The neutrogena clarifying shampoo made forr once a week use is really good stuff. It's a small bottle. But it works really well...so use the mane and tail every day, but clarify once a week...which is good practice anyway, espicially if you use a lot of products.
If you use Mane and Tail every day...then you should use Lemon Fresh Joy (ultra concentrated) once a week to wash your hair...condition as usual. I've still not found any shampoo that strips the build-up off my hair like Lemon Joy (not any other scent...it has to be the Lemon scent).
In fact, my hair is healthier just using the Lemon Joy once a week anyways. No matter which shampoo/conditioner you use, it leaves a build-up.

Lemon Joy, VG ??!! I would think it''d dry out the hair..How you find out about that tip ?? I'm willing to try it, I'm just curious..Also is it safe to use on colored hair ?

I used Mane & Tail for awhile when I was in high school; my hair was past my waist and really thick, and prone to breakage. I found that the Mane & Tail made the breakage much worse and my hair was a total mess after a couple of months. Turns out that stuff has wax in it, and it makes your hair so heavy it snaps. Hullo, split ends.
A better way to make your hair silky and shiny is a weekly condition with mayonnaise. Take the mayo (preferably warmed) and massage it into your hair, wrap it up, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then wash it. The smell washes out and it leaves your hair so beautiful! Mayo is basically just protein and oil, so it makes sense.

I'll have to try the mayonaise again..I used it before and it did worked well, it was just super hard to wash out. Any suggestions for rinsing it out easier ?

Do it before you shampoo, or shampoo a second time after the mayo.

I've heard that the fats and proteins in mayo can't penetrate the hair shaft. At least that's what I read in a magazine.
You know what is a really awesome deep conditioner? Avacado. I used to do it once a week before I got the extensions.
I mashed up a whole avacado really good, mixed with some olive oil and spread it in my hair, put on a plastic cap and l;et it sit for half hour or so. Takes some time to rinse out, espicially if you didn't mash it good cause you'll have chunks, but rinse really good, it'll all come out and your hair is soo soft and silky. Can throw an egg in here as well, but make sure when you rinse you don't use hot water or else you'll cook the egg and make a HUGE mess in your hair!
Yeah, if you have colored hair, I wouldn't suggest using the Joy. My hair is all-natural colors...no highlights or anything.
I got the tip from a cosmetologist friend. I complained about having to spend $35 every time I went to have my hair done because of build-up.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

Most of the build up you get is from silicones though. If you're going cone-free, that's really not as much of a problem. Of course, most people are not silicone free in terms of hair care, so clarifying is necessary.
If you're going from lots of cones, to coneless you really have to clarify. You need to get all the build-up/coating off your hair first, so moisture can be let in.
Mane and Tail has a lot of protein though, which in excess can cause breakage. If you're able to find it, I'd suggest Giovanni's Triple Tea Treat...it's coneless and a lot more gentle. M&T is okay though, but I find if I use it all the time the protein makes my hair straw like.

Oh yeah, there's 2 types of Mane and Tail actually. One is cone-free and one does have cones...
I didn't like it much when I tried it.

what are cones?

I used it about 15 yrs ago. Stopped because it weighed my hair down after a while. Nothing else has ever done that. Oh and I couldn't stand the stench. Gawd, that stuff smelled awful.
Even for color-treated hair, good ole original Neutrogena once a week works wonders. Then I'll use an Arctec Natural Shampoo or conditioner to re-infuse whatever color my hair is (changes all the time.) Then a good conditioner. Voila. You get rid of the buildup and your follicle is ripe for an infusion of color.
I'm not a hair pro though. And I don't think my hair is thick enough for the Mane and Tail.
