Default Man, this sucks so bad

No matter how much I doubt myself, I know I had a good shot at the Honda dealership job. I think they were willing to take a chance on me, spotty job history and all.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can take the job. Now it hasn't been offered to me yet, I'm supposed to call to see if I got it tomorrow. But finances have gotten in the way of MAKING money once again.

Gas is about $3.15/gallon up here. My car needs about $30 to fill the tank, and gets about 270 miles per tank (yes it's a little tank). Here's the sucky part:

35 miles one way to the dealership, that makes 70 miles driving a day.
$70 total in my bank account.

The way this all ties in together means I can only afford to take this job for about a week before I have zero money and no gas in my tank. And you all know how it can take weeks to get a first paycheck.

So unfortunately, I think I'm going to just email the sales manager tonight and thank him again, but tell him even if he were wanting to hire me, that I can't accept.

    This sucks so bad

One tiny particle of hope: I have an interview with Safeway (grocery store) on Tuesday. Minimum wage, but it's money.

BG, did you dance before? I am guessing you don't want to do that anymore. I am a full-time student myself and need to take a part-time job. I find it very difficult to go back to making a low wage after making so much money. I admire your ability and willingness to do that.

NO!!! Don't e-mail him and tell him anything. Wait until you find out HOW and WHAT they are going to pay you, and WHEN. There's no point screwing yourself out of something that could be really good for you until you absolutely know for sure that you can't do it. Besides, what if they decide to hire someone else, but then have another opening in a couple of months? If you e-mail him and tell him no now, it kind of bites you in the ass in the future.

Yeah, don't tell him no yet!! Isn't there anyone to loan you a hundred or two until you get your paycheck? You would make far more selling cars than you would at Safeway, so do what you have to do!

I agree with everyone else, you gain nothing by sending that e-mail. On the other hand if you send the e-mail before he even talks to you, you may loose any future consideration. I know it is not ideal, and I don't know if you have tried this, but there are temp agencies that pay you the same day you work. If you could get a couple days work(before you start or on your days off) you may be able to make it.

No temp agencies that I know of around here. An nobody around to borrow money from.

    It's minimum wage plus comission.

I guess Ill still call tomorrow.

Any way to car pool with someone else who drives there? Or stay with someone there until you get your first check? Or ask for temporary assistance from a church or samaritan organization (including asking if they know of anyone who would car pool)? Or sell/pawn something you own for cash? Or go for broke, hunker down to sell a gazillion cars the first week and then triumphantly ask for an advance on your first fat paycheck?

I know, I'm stretching, but I'm merely trying to stimulate any potential idea that might not have initially crossed your mind. You may be wise to work locally until you can save enough to afford a longer commute to a better job. Regardless, like others have said, don't slam the door shut entirely. If you can't take the distant job should they offer, just say without offering details that you've had another opportunity closer to home come up.

    Good luck.

Yeah, maybe one of your parents could loan you a little gas money, and you could pay them back when you get your first check? Or perhaps as a last resort you could explain the gas situation to your future employer and they could give you some sort of sign on bonus?

I hate to say it, but uh... you can always sell your blood or plasma for a few bucks too. And if gas keeps going up, are you close enough to the BART?

I agree with those who have said to wait and see what he offers you. If you take the job, couldn't you still supplement your income by dancing?

(This type of situation is why I'm always preaching to girls about saving their dancing dollars. We should never be so broke as to not be able to take a great job when it comes along.)

No dancing. The short of it is if I can't afford to drive a job thats 35 miles away, I can't afford to drive a job at least 100 miles away.

If you get offered the job, voice your concern. Some places give you a company car or a gas allowance. I'm pretty sure my one friend got a gas allowance when he worked selling Saabs.

BART=Bay Area Rapid Transit, it's one of the public transportation systems.

BART would be a good suggestion, but it doesn't have service anywhere near where she is or where she needs to go.

I don't know about in the US but in Canada there are social assistance programs that help people out financially who are looking for jobs. They give you money to get you started with your new job. Its not really welfare... but yea I know a few people who used it when they were trying to get started in new jobs.

Either way don't turn down the job. Wait to see what they have to offer you then carefully plan out your situation. Things will work out for you.

I just called them to follow up like I was told to do.

He said that they still had more interviews to do, so they weren't ready to hire yet. He told me that I am definitely in the top percentage of applicants in the running, and he also mentioned that he received the emailed thank you note I sent. He said that it was a nice touch, and scored major points with them.

I'm supposed to give him a couple of days to finish interviews and then I am supposed to wait for HIS call this time.

My father in law gets a courtesy vehicle from his dealership also. It can't hurt to ask for some help because you live a little ways away.

but he has to pay for gas, right? It's not the car that's the issue, it's the gas money. Maybe they can front you some gas money after your first sale?

    HK,
I feel like that will deter them from wanting to hire me because when they asked if it would be a problem getting to and from work (they saw that I lived far), I told them no problem....

Yeah, Em is right, it's not the car, I have that. It's the gas. R said to take it if I get it, and he'd figure out something.

but the driving isn't the problem. it's your lack of money right now that's the problem. And tell them after they hire you.

I still don't see why you can't dance for one shift. You can get 100 miles. Just get to the club once and get the money to fill your tank.

Go to local churches and tell them your problem. At my church, we have "discretionary benevolences" each month, which means we give away about $350 to people in need. If nobody needs it that month, it goes to the Red Cross or some other charity.
We've given gas money to a family that needed to drive to visit their daughter in a hospital. If you lived here, we would give you gas cards if you got the job. (I don't know where you live, but I don't think it is here.) I'm sure other churches have similar programs, but you have to ask. They won't go looking for you.

Or, ask the pastor if there is a member of the church in the town where you will work who would let you stay with them for a couple weeks until you get your first paycheck and can afford gas. Offer to pay rent after you get paid or to do household chores for your benefactor.

If a church helps you like this, after you are drawing a paycheck it would be a nice gesture to make a donation to thank them.

    Thanks.

    FTR:

No, I cannot dance. I did so, and I retired from it. The end. I'm tired of every thread saying 'well I don't understand why you can't jut dance'. I've already explain why this isn't an option. If somebody has forgotten, they can go look up another 'panic thread' of mine and read why.

I'm retired. For good, not just maybe. I need to start thinking like a woman that has never stripped and won't, so that isn't an option. Those women find solutions without dancing, so I have to as well.

well.. yeah, they find solutions. and typically those solutions dont involve doing what they really can't do. which, in your case, would be driving to a job where you cant pay for gas. they take the bus. they do other things.. but the solution probably isnt going to be something you want to hear
