Default question about "getting back on the wagon"

Those of you who have paid attention to my posts in the October challenge might've noticed I dropped out, because of some really sad things that were going on in my life (yes, life or death situations. literally.) I landed up pigging out and gaining a TON of water weight and a couple pounds.

It's not the weight that ticks me off, though, it's the LACK OF TONE. taking off 1.5-2 weeks has turned me into Flab Mountain and I desperately wanna get the tone I had a couple weeks ago BACK.

How long does that take? I mean, will my body bounce back pretty quickly? I was working out about 5 days a week 30 mins cardio and 30 mins weights and then sometimes a 3 days at 2 hours (40 cardio and the rest ws strength.) Right now I am doing 45 mins. of cardio and then maybe 20-30 mins of weights.

Muscle doesn't atrophy THAT fast. Your muscle didn't "turn into" flab. It sounds like you just have a little extra fat you didn't have before. You will probably drop that weight pretty fast, if you only gained a few pounds.
    Welcome back!

You probably look a lot better than you think. Maybe it's more how you feel. I know I get that way when I haven't worked out in a week or 2. I feel sluggish and I notice my posture isn't as straight. Once you get back into the routine though, I'll be willing to bet you'll feel like yourself again around your 2nd or 3rd session.

Yeah, if you gain fat it tends to cover up the muscle, but the muscle doesn't just shrink back in a week or two.

I saw that you dropped out and felt sorry for you. I'm glad you're going to get back into working out again. Good luck with that.

thanks, you guys! I'm trying to do one active thing every day. my ob/gyn is totally fit and said the only way to do it is to workout everyday. not workout like a nut, but do SOMETHING that pushes your body at least a bit. I push myself seriously hard about 5/7 days, that's my new plan, and just walk for a half hour an hour on the "off" days. do crunches everyday, though, 'cos my stomach and inner thighs got REALLY hit by the pounds I gained.

does anyone know what 3 lbs of fat looks like, btw?

Fat is soft and takes up a fair bit of space (while muscle is hard and compact). 3lbs of fat, in terms of the space it takes up, looks a lot like 3lbs of margarine.

ok, and working out busts up fat or muscle? I hear more than 45 mins busts muscle, so is it safe to assume the first 45 uses energy from fat stores?

man, i hate how much science is involved in looking good, hahaha

Depends on the kind of exercise you are doing. Aerobic exercise uses stored glycogen for the first 20-30 mins before switching to stored fat.
