    Default food budget

see poll. if you buy groceries for a multi person family devide your total by 3 of people in the family above the age of 2.

why do you spend that amount?

I've never really thought about why we spend that much (about $250 a week total for my family of four). We just have what we like to eat and that's about what it costs.

I don't budget food. I spend a lot and it's all fresh and organic.

I spend 400-500 (800-1000 for the household) b/c we buy expensive meats and because i cook a lot of foods. we eat healthfully and organic when possible. but that is expensive. we will start to save more money in the future b/c all of our produce will be very low cost (likely free) b/c we're mooching off someones organic co-op.

we'll save 300+ a month from now on I'd say, bringing our total down to 500-700! yay!

co-ops are a great saver. if we were payingfor the produce it'd only cost us 20-50 dallars a month, verses 300+ for a lot less in the store.

the cons to a co-op are needing people to share it with and often being unable to select exactly which things you get.

I cook all the time and never skimp on ingredients. Usually, dinner at home (for two) costs me more in groceries than it would to go to a nice restaurant.

I never eat out and I like to have the things I enjoy on hand in decent quantities. I don't tend to spend on things that aren't food, either, so I can afford to go a bit more all out on the grocery shop than I could if I did more discretionary spending in other areas.

I hardly ever eat out either and I eat very healthily but I also watch my spending and spend about $35 a week on groceries, but it also depends on what I already have, like if I have to buy cereal or not that week etc.

I always buy the same things too: soy milk, a tub of yoghurt, lots of pink lady apples, pineapple, strawberries, spinach, tomatoes, fetta cheese, capsicum, salmon, soup, oats, orange juice

I'm a nub. I accidentally voted wrong. I spend about $70 per week on my own groceries.

When the funds start running low, I buy a lot of dried beans to cook in the pressure cooker. Veggies here, although aren't organic, have much stricter pesticide laws then in the States, so I can buy a lot of them, they taste fresh and good and they're not expensive. Mostly though my food staple is beans and rice and a lot of vegetable soups....ok, fine and a lot of Mon Cheri chocolates with liqour in them!

    300-400, but closer to 400.

i buy a lot of produce, seafood, and nuts. but i also buy oats and canned/frozen veggies and berries. it would be a lot higher if i hadn't learned what to compromise on.

it's pomegranate season, though, so for a while, it'll be 50-100 bucks higher than usual.

We spend a lot of money on groceries! I have found an organic farm that delivers all of my fruits and veggies, though. So, it's pricey, but it's excellent and it saves me having to make the trip to the store. We also buy our organic meat in bulk from a co-op. We do have friends who buy some of the meat from us...and we have a huge deep freezer that we stock full and use it all before ordering more.

The one good thing is that Joe (scorpio) does so much fishing. So, we get fresh, wild-caught salmon (cohos are in season soon, yippee!), perch, walleyes, etc. He's going to Arkansas soon...and that means a freezer full of nummy fish!! He also barters fish for, say, pheasant, quail, duck, and deer. So, he has hunter friends who don't fish, but like fish...and we'll give them some fish for some fresh game.

Otherwise, we'd probably spend a whole hell of a lot more money on groceries.

I'm with you on that. I try my best to grab organic, and not ever look at the reciept.

I don't think we have ever left a restaurant for dinner without spending at least a hundred bucks for two of us. More when i was drinking. I buy all organic groceries and hope to join a co-op soon. When i was little my mom would buy like half a cow and we would freeze it, i'd like to find somewhere to do that too. We both like lamb a lot and that gets pricey. My husband never skimps on food or drinks.

I don't cook much at home, but I don't like to prep, so I'm all about getting the washed, packaged lettuce and the veggies already julienned, stuff like that. So I spend quite a bit on my laziness, lol.

Under 100, I know a lot of cheap recipes that I really like, and I live alone, and leftovers last me awhile since I live by myself.

For the two of us prob $400-$500 a month. But we get a lot of fresh produce, I get organic milk(for him) and soy milk(for me) which are both more expensive...organic or free range meats...

Plus we dont eat out a lot anymore so groceries are about 90% of our food budget or more.

Plus..we like snacky foods..cheese and crackers, chips...a lot of days we dont really eat meals, we just graze. And a lot of things I prefer brand names since I can afford it now...real cereal, real pasta sauce(good stuff too)...its worth it to us.

We dont go out and party or anything like that...so good food is one of our only indulgences

Like seriously, what are you buying that adds up to so much? Or is it just that when you buy for more people, the cost per person decreases?

Well, I think most people that answered are shopping for two or more.
