Default I hope this belongs here, it's a permit

Permit question. So here i am again. Facing an issue i want to help as a responsible reptile owner.

We have as of The end of Dec. to have our large constrictors and monitor lizards micro'd and scanned in our name along with a $100 permit to own yearly.

Ok, NOW we have petstores all around me who never carried Reticulated Pythons etc. Now they have ALOT!

To buy a hedgehog..FIRST you need a permit. If you get the permit (qualify) you go pick up a Hedgehog.

Question is, how can i change this "buy a large snake now" crap to "get a permit to own first" then buy?

There has to be a way. I fear for losing my snakes to the state because of petstore selling, online selling and people who wont comply.

    Thank you.

^^^ realistically, there probably isn't a lot that can be done. I assume that any laws covering the issue of pet licensing and purchase of 'dangerous' pets originate at the state level ? If so, then your only possibility is to wallpaper your local state senate and assembly members in hopes that a couple of them will be willing to sponsor a bill amending the state law. Of course you'll be fighting the pet store chains and their lobbying money.

You're also probably correct that state lawmakers won't be interested in doing anything about enforcing 'dangerous' pet licensing until it gets out of hand, until a couple of well publicized tragic accidents drum up public interest - at which point the lawmakers will probably overreact and ban the private ownership of 'dangerous' pets altogether.

And that is what worries more as time gets closer to permit or large constrictors. And petstores bulking up and selling off quick.

What about Florida Today Newspaper, or even national newspaper? Think i have a chance to voice my opinion about this messed up situation?

^^^ well, some press coverage wouldn't hurt. But probably, the attention span and prejudice of your average citizens and politicians will lead back to the same place ... if there's a big enough problem to actually warrant their attention, the solution is to overreact and ban the ownership of 'dangerous' animals entirely.

This has proven to be the case again and again in similar contexts i.e. gun control, where the stupidity and non-compliance of a tiny minority of owners of 'dangerous' items has in turn affected the ownership 'rights' of a responsible majority. As a result, your boa constrictor is liable to wind up being reclassified as a reptilian 'assault rifle', with your neighbors and politicians deeming that you no longer have any legitimate need / reason / justification to own such a 'dangerous' item !
