    Default Philly People

I don't know if it was posted here but a while ago a prostitute was gang raped at gunpoint in Philly. The judge reduced the charges against the rapist from rape to theft of services.

Well, tomorrow is the day you all get to vote out that juge. If you don't normally vote, this is a good reason to do it.

The Judge's name is Teresa Deni, and there's a virtual rally about it today at www.boundnotgagged.com

That is just beyond gross. Hello? I mean, that would be the appropriate charge for refusing to pay at gunpoint AFTER the fact, but what kind of a judge would call rape theft of services? Why do people have no respect for sex workers like this? If I were to make a cab driver drive me somewhere at gunpoint, would anyone think of that as "theft of service" rather than kidnapping, etc?

I wish I were in Philly, I'd certainly be turning out for *this* one. This is sickening. It also seems to be true that women can be worse to other women than even men can be: I'm sure for the victim, this is like being raped again.

That being said, I find the whole concept of "voting out" judges extremely bizarre and likely to lead to unfairness towards unpopular defendants.

Yeah, the voting on judges thing is wierd. When I was in PA and I volunteered in the juvenile court system we had this really really good juvenile court judge. Soo good that it was really a big deal for all the kids' futures that he stay the judge. I went out to the polls and gave people cookies and tried to convince them to vote for him (you know, outside the building, where you're allowed to do that) and it was so wierd. People's voting habits were all about the party and the commercials and they didn't want to hear a thing about reality.
