I have sleeping trouble (can't fall asleep, toss and turn all night, can't stay asleep) so I take OTC sleeping aid, Simply Sleep. It's made by the same people who make Tylenol PM. Is it unhealthy to take it nightly?

i always thought it was very easy to get addicted to sleeping pills. and if you ever stop taking them you wont be able to sleep.

im not sure. ive read some stuff on here that girls have said they cause hallucinations and stuff, maybe try doing a search? i dont remember exactly what people have said, just vaguely that ive read it.

Kava Kava is a natural sleep aid and non habit forming. Theres also kava kava tea which I've heard from a friend that it works really well.

I've had hallucinations on Ambien. But only if I take a really high dose. I take it every night. I cant sleep without it...but it has little to do with dependancy(I wont say NOTHING because theres always a chance)..but before I was prescribed it I never slept. I went days with no sleep and when I did sleep, I woke up every 15-20 minutes so I was never rested. I got sick a lot.
My Dr decided that it was better for me to take it indefinately then not sleep at all and get sick.
But I dont recommend it for people who do not have SEVERE insomnia.

There is a smaller risk of becoming dependent on the OTC sleeping pills. I was always groggy the next day when I used them. Instead, I take natural supplements to help with sleep like Valerian and Melatonin, both of which can be found in your local drugstore. One of each of these with a glass of milk and i'm out for the entire night sleeping like a baby.
I would recommend trying something natural before trying anything else.

yep. my sister told me to try melatonin. i havn't tried it yet. she has delt with insomnia for a long time. she tried otc stuff and ambien. she said ambien made her halucinate. she said melatonin works like a charm for her. she said that's what your body produces naturally to make you sleep but some people don't produce enough and that's why the can't sleep. if i had already tried it maybe i'd be asleep right now. oh yeah she also said it takes a couple of weeks to work cuz it has to get into your blood first. so don't give up on it if it doesn't work the first time you try it. and don't forget to talk to your doctor no matter what method you use. for me otc stuff lost its effectiveness after a while anyway. sweet dreamssorry i had to say it

melatonin doesnt work for meit actually makes me sleep WORSE.
Most OTC sleep aids are just diphenhydramine--*Benadryl* under a different name.
I took Benadryl nightly for a couple years. It probably isn't the greatest thing, but I never had any side effects besides waking up with a headache and dry mouth because it dries you out.
OTC sleeping pills are useless. They take forever to work and leave you dry and groggy in the morning. Because, as zxcire said, they are essentially benedryl.
I love Ambien but I won't take it due to past abuse.

Actually, these OTC pills I take (Simply Sleep) work very well for me! Different strokes for different folks I guess. Plus, they make me feel well rested in the mornings and not dry/groggy at all!
I just was wondering if it was unsafe for me to be taking these as often as I do. I've always had a kind of sleeping problem and these pills really help.
BTW....how did you abuse Ambien?

Thanks for the info! I started taking melatonin with great results, but haven't had any issues. Be sure to get away from bright lights for an hour before sleep, no stimulants 4 hours before, no food 2 hours, only use the bed for two things (sleep 'n sex), and make your bedtime consistent! it's just good sleep hygiene.

valerian root is really good for relaxing your mind and body and is an herbal supplement i think.
