    Default What Motivates You?

What gets you going and getting things accomplished?

This more geared towards everyday/ chores/ beauty etc, not work.

Especially would like to hear from people who also have depression, as it seems this might be why I lay in bed all day unmotivated to even take a shower, ,do my makeup, etc.

new stuff! I like to see new ideas for make up in mags or on t.v., read a new book and learn something about how to redecorate my house.. New ideas for recipes from watching t.v., reading or just seeing something new at the grocery store.
when the l;aundry piles up so much I can't close my bedroom door without something getting caught, that will motivate me!
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

Music will motivate me almost all of the time. I can't clean my house without some kind of music playing. Then once I start cleaning, I won't be able to stop usually.

Word. I just get motivated randomly for no apparent reason. And sometimes I go for months without any motivation at all.. For the last week, everyday I've been cleaning my house (except yesterday and today, I've been sick). But my apt went for a few months without much more than picking laundry out of the piles of crap on my floor. Not sure why..

Time limits. I'll tell myself I'll do dishes until the microwave stops, or pick up until the tea kettle boils. For longer stuff I'll put on a movie or cd and do whatever for that much longer. I even do this for exercise. If I don't time myself I'll do it for 2 minutes and then get bored. I can always start over when the time's up, but it makes it easier to chop it up.

Those are good ideas. I always have trouble timing things and end up not doing anything!

Oooh, Queen motivates me a lot! So does any sort of operatic or power metal, actually.

Weightlifting sets something positive off inside of me. I feel like I can do anything and everything.

Listing to Bob Marley always puts me in the cleaning mood.

Being around competitive people and/or perfectionists inspires me to do and be better.

Going to the bank. When I absolutely have to put money in my account or it will be overdrawn, I will haul my depressed ass out of bed and go to the bank. By that point I usually haven't been to the grocery in awhile either, and if I don't need to go to the bank, then the need to buy food will push me out of the house. If I run out of water, I will get dressed and go. And usually once I've run an errand or two, I'm back in the real world again.

If I have no errands to run but I'm in a depressed funk and want to snap out of it, I take myself out to lunch. There is a Thai place with a great lunch special and yummy jasmine tea, and I take a book there and read while I eat. It brings my mood back up.

    music for sure.

oh and if i have a bunch of stuff to do in, say a week, i will write a list, but for the entire week. then things aren't quite so overwhelming. you can do more on the days you're up to it.
when i'm feeling particularly unmotivated (for whatever reason) if i can just do ONE thing that needs doing, that's an accomplishment.

so to sum it up... one thing at a time!!

for my everyday things well, sometimes i like to shower on an evening, then i don't have to do that on the morning. sometimes i reward myself like... if i put my makeup on and do my hair in less than 15 minutes, THEN i can eat my breakfast. i'll wait until i've plucked my eyebrows and waxed my legs and THEN i'll watch a movie.

Baby steps. Don't look atthe whole picture.

Have to go to the gym>?
Justput on yoru gym clothes. worry abotu the rest after you getthatfar.

    Have to clean the house?
    Just organize the magazines.
Anythign to get started. Once your get started, it's easy to keep going...and you can get overwhelmed lookign atthe whole big picture, so focus on baby steps.

    Gotta giv eyoruself a pedi?
    Just get out the nailpolish.

Anythign to get in motion, after that it's easy

So true. My problem is that I can be so overly ambitious and motivated...setting myself up for disappointment when I don't accomplish something at the exact time I want to. A control-freak. I'm so hard on myself.

I'm often motivated by the simple fact that I hate feeling like crap. One thing that helps is to focus on the way you'll feel after you do something, like if you dread going to work, focus on the great feeling of having a wad of cash in your pocket and being one step closer to a goal at the end of the night. If you don't feel like going to the gym, focus on how good you feel when it's over, and how that self loathing feeling will grow stronger if you blow it off yet again.

For writing a paper or cleaning, things that are easy to procrastinate on, I'll set a timer. Ten minutes to race around the house cleaning as fast as you can. Twenty minutes to spew out as much as you can in your paper. I find that short, fast bursts can help set things in motion and is a great way to attack seemingly insurmountable tasks.
