Default Customer wants to "give" me car

    Hi
I have a customer who I have known for 4 months regularly. He likes to shower his friends, coworkers, family with gifts and stuff. He is in his late 50's.
    Next week is my birthday.
He wants to provide me with a car (new Mustang EXACTLY what I want) and a gas card to use. My current car is about to die. He has seen it.
I know it will be in his name. His insurance, but it's ok with that insurance if someone else drives it.
He said, "With the car, you will give me your friendship? That's all I want". He said that I could now drive up to the club in a hot ride like the other girls do.
I have met two of his friends/business partners.

Should I do this? Have YOU done this or know anyone that has?

If it's in his name it's not a gift.

It can be a really bad idea.

Rarely do regulars give you something extravagant and only want friendship.

What if things turn sour? You'll have no car. And if it's truly supposed to be for you, why will the car be in his name, his insurance, etc?

IMO, that's not "giving you a car". That's buying a car that you happen to like and letting you borrow it. He will be able to hold it over your head and have power over you. What if you need the car, and he decides he wants more than a friendship?

Red flags all around, bad idea.

Exactly, that's not a gift. A lot of insurance companies don't cover drivers not listed on their policies. State Farm is an exception to this though. You take that car and you give up some control. It will be in his name, he's making the payments, plus you have to "give him 'friendship.'" What does that even mean?

I can understand wanting to upgrade from a bucket, but I would make sure the "gift" is legally mine before accepting something so lavish. If he does put the car under your name, you will have to pay taxes on it.

Also, if the car is in his name he can report the vehicle stolen. Especially if the "friendship" he is referring to is not "progressing" enough to his liking. You may not think it would get to that point, but trust me it will. Imagine having to explain the situation to the cops--it would be a very embarrassing situation at best.

I'm dealing with the same thing now. Custy bought me 2 cars. The first one was an older model and I got that in my name since it was paid off. 2 years later, older car dies right in the middle of semester, so custy "bought me" a second car that year (brand new) in his name. I don't consider that my car, and several times he's tried to pressure me into things I have no desire to do. When he does that, though, I just tell him he can have his fucking car back and he backs off.

I'm not paying for it, so I'm saving up for the car I want and will just buy it the minute he gives me the ultimatum. SO, you could use it as a loaner until you get the money up for your own car, but just know that you are BORROWING that car, save appropriately so you won't be some asshole's indentured servant.

EXACTLY. That's basically him buying himself a car and letting you borrow it but without defining the terms of the loan. Get him to get it in your name, or don't accept it.

She makes a good point there, but your custie might not back off so easily if you tell him he can have his car back. As good as it's working out in frances' situation, I still wouldn't do it unless it was in my name.

Yeah, he's a pretty tame guy. I wouldn't recommend it if the guy is incredibly pushy. Plus, we have professional connections (I'm no longer dancing), and no one is aware of this starting as a dancer/custy relationship.

So Lexxus is right, it is quite different and I got lucky.

I have done it, but the car was given to me outright. I had it put in my mother's name. Make sure no matter what that you have a signed agreement that you have permission to drive the car on you and in the car at all times.

I agree with frances, take $500 a month as if you were paying a car payment and paying insurance and put it aside so that if that ultimatum ever comes, you can tell him to come get the car and buy your own.

I would drive the fancy car whilst saving up for one myself. I guess just be aware of what the worst thing is that could happen, as far as I can see the worst thing is that he might take the car back? If you make sure you get something in writing that you are allowed to drive the car, and make sure yoiu cover your ass with insurance... or is the worst thing that he might expecvt something in return? So long as you dont hang out with him anywhere alone or unsafe I guess there isn't much he can do except be a pain in the butt at which point you give the car back? Maybe I am nbiacve though and missing something. Personally I just regret the amount of times I said no to a free car when I needed one!

you hit the nail on the head!

a customer purchased a vehicle for me, but put EVERYTHING in my name. it would be wise for you to do as well, for the reasons said by all the other lovely SWers.

if it's under his name, then strings are completely attached.

A customer offered to "give" me a BMW 5 series, but then I figured out it was leased. Fuck that shit!

I would tell him if it were me that I am not comfortable driving a car that is not in my name. Tell him that you will go to the dealership and pick out the car, sign the paperwork, and register it in your name, and he can give you a cashiers check for the exact amount of the contracted price. tell him you will pay for your own insurance and gas, and that if he wished to contribute to the gas and insurance fund he can give you a a few hundred in cash each month and you will cover it yourself.

See what he says. Most guys like that use the car as leverage, and savvy business owners conduct all their business as a corporate entity, and lease all of their vehicles and set up all car expenses under their corporation. Dancers are just little girls to them. Dancers are broke, they have money, and dangling what seems to be a large sum of money over a dancers head equals control.

That car will be taken from you once you no longer meet his needs.

You could finance the car yourself if you have solid enough credit, and ask him to give you 30% down as a birthday present.See what his reaction is to the options I suggested. I'll bet he will be less enthusiastic.

I got a car from a customer once some years ago when I worked in Kansas City. It was used, but I found the car, and he gave me a cashiers check to pay for it.

I did this before. Got a jeep grand cherokee laredo. I picked it out with him atthe dealership, he paid for it in cash, but put it in his name. I never even thought abotu the reprecussions of that arrangement until later...
All he wanted in return was "arm candy"

That lasted abotu 3 months before he started asking for more, more more.
One day I came out of the club and my car was gone. Repoed, so to speak, cause I wasn't putting out.

Theoreticially, had he wanted to be nasty, he coudl have called the cops and reported it stolen. Since it was in his name and i had no proof he was loaning it to me....

So I say, bad Idea. UNles syou have a back up plan for the day when he decides he's not getting enough in return and wants to take his "gift" back.

Why wouldn't you get auto insurance in your name? You can insured to drive a vehicle you don't own! That's a big risk you're taking.

I don't know about where she is, but you can get non-owner's insurance where I am (CA).

you can get it in tx and wa, also. it's a special kind of policy, but it is not hard to come by if you specify you need non-driver's insurance specifically.

What if he puts GPS on the car and figures out where you live? Just a thought... so be careful.

I agree with just asking for 30% for a down payment up front. Tell him you don't feel comfortable accepting that large of a gift and you'd rather just have a nice down payment to get you started, and you'd still love to "give him your friendship" or whatever.

I agree with what has been said. Car in your name or nothing. It sounds like he is trying to get control over you. "If you don't...... I'm taking back the car."

That sounds scary but would be easy for him to do - be careful!

    HI
Just an update. Great news. I have the car and the title and everything is in my name. He "dumped" me and is in love with some woman now, and told me he wasn't an "Indian Giver" and he liked helping me, so I guess this is a real happy ending!
